FCC abolishes gigabit speed goal, suggesting it is unfair to slower technologies

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/08/fcc-abolishes-gigabit-speed-goal-suggesting-it-is-unfair-to-slower-technologies/

The Federal Communications Commission last week eliminated the gigabit speed goal established during the Biden administration and declared that current levels of broadband deployment in the US are acceptable. Though fiber networks have routinely offered such speeds for years, the FCC said the gigabit speed goal is not “technologically neutral,” suggesting that it isn’t fair to other, slower technologies.

This sounds like an onion article. It's akin to "scholarships are unfair to dumb people"

Megadiverse countries

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i didnt realize this was a designation in the world. makes sense that the large countries in the tropical zone would moslty qualify

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

To be classified as megadiverse, a nation must have at least 5,000 plants that occur naturally only within its borders, as well as a marine ecosystem.

The 17 megadiverse countries comprise approximately 70% of the world’s biodiversity

heyalumnigo's avatar

I thought it was referencing different ethnicities of people not plants.

sycasey's avatar

Me too and I wondered how China got the designation over Canada. But if it's wildlife diversity then that makes sense!

Wiata78's avatar

Interesting that the Democratic Republic of the Congo makes the list, since it has such a small coastline.

‘Tugboat’ leads Giants to shutout victory in Cleveland

Matt Wilkinson had a strong MLB debut and Dylan Smith delivered a two-inning save as SF Giants prevailed, 1-0.

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/san-francisco-giants-scores-standings/110625/tugboat-leads-giants-to-shutout-victory-in-cleveland

Sometimes when a ship is floundering, sitting dead in the water with no momentum, they just need a little help from a tugboat to make it safely into the harbor. In 2026, the San Francisco Giants are that sinking ship. Wednesday night in Cleveland, Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson was that tugboat.

i drank my first Pepsi Max. it was horrible.

0 cal, 0 sugar, 0 carbs, 0 taste.

i normally like Pepsi (even more than Coke)

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i was just thinking that someday in the not-so-distant future where everything is AI all the time, a pastime like posting on DBD will be considered something archaic and somewhat analog.

i wanted to post something after lunch and i had this idea that i could just say to my phone, "post XYZ on DBD" and it would.

but then i decided that would be horrible because more than half the fun is hearing what all you fine folks have to say and just posting into the void is not why i come to DBD.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

on a long 9 hour flight later today. will have to find something good to read.

it has to be medium to small sized to last a week for Peru hiking trip but not too heavy.

Wiata78's avatar

A Kindle is good for that.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i used to have one when they first came out. i went back to physical books.

i like how the words on a book are on the same place on the page every time and if you want to ever find something again you know to look approx 1/2 of the way thru on the lower left side. maybe there are some notes, or maybe not.

in the current moment i am thinking of the scene in the Iliad where Hector says goodbye to his baby boy before going off to fight Achilles. the little boy is scared because Hector is wearing his war helmet.

this would be nearly impossible on a Kindle unless i tagged a thing or know the exact words. i am sure there are ways to use it better that i never discovered.

dcblue's avatar

I’m generally a cheap person but buying a physical book is one thing I do splurge on. B&N have opened three stores in the area over the last year or so.

Wiata78's avatar

You have a point. In a book, you can dog ear a page, you can write in it even. That makes it more your own. You can turn pages faster, and you can flip through pages faster.

Also, the resolution of ink on paper is still better, although kindles have improved a lot.

The kindle allows you to set unlimited bookmarks anywhere and it has a built in dictionary. Some versions let you write.

You are dependent on Amazon staying in business for your kindle library to survive.

I found the kindle to be nice for reading mindless fun stories to pass the time on long plane flights, like a trip to China, and the various flights within China.

Never been to Colombia, but...

Shortly after I started dating the young woman who would become Dr. Ms. Newellbany, I went to South America for 10 weeks while between jobs. Colombia was having serious safety issues at the time and so it was the one place on the continent she implored me not to visit. Back then, we all travelled with a giant travel book. When a wicked case of the bichos (traveler's diarrhea) hit me out of nowhere, the Colombia pages of that book came in handy.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i miss the days of traveling w/ giant travel book and no all-powerful device in one's pocket. travel was more adventurous, spontaneous, special and fun.
