During my freshman year, early 1970s, my sophomore roommate was taking the Physics 4 series, using the Berkeley Physics Series. For the last time. For my year, we had a humble professor announce that no other school had adopted the Berkeley Physic Series, and so they were creating a new Physics 5, using Halliday and Resnik as the text.
There was also a Physics 5H, which maybe also used the Berkeley Physics series? I took the regular Physics 5, so I don’t recall.
Halliday and Resnik…now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time.
Had those books at DVC, where I went before transferring to Cal. Have had one of the books on my office shelf for the last 37 years. Collecting dust mostly. Am remodeling office now, so will have to find it tomorrow and reminisce.
We used Halliday and Resnik as well for the Physics 7 series in the late 80s early 90s. My dad was also an ME and I saw 1966 2nd printing versions on his bookshelf. It is physics so I can't imagine much changed in the 20 years between versions.
Took 7A, 7B, and 7C from Zettl. Roommate and I took 7A from Zettl but couldn't get into his class for 7B. We both wanted his class so we bugged the TA for at least a couple of weeks before he let us in to the impacted class.
I remember for 7A he had one of those water rockets and shot it off in PSL. Someone mentioned there was a 2 stage version so he got one and shot it off in PSL hitting the ceiling.
Since I think he was one of the ones working on superconductivity, he spent most of a lecture showing us his superconductive magnet. Was pretty cool.
As an intended physics major from the start, I took H7A and H7B.
I barley passed the first one and had to ask for permission to take the 2nd. It didn't go much better so I dropped down to regular 7C for the this one.
Still, it was valuable to have taken it and get my butt kicked. Ended up being good prep for grad school
also, even though i failed advanced physics lab (kinda like the Margaritaville song) it was super valuable. it was a 3 semester sequence where you recreated and replicated the basic results of modern physics, ie measuring charge of an electron, scattering, etc.
i ended up really liking it and doing experimental physics in grad school w/ a solid foundation from Cal

sounds like physics 4 and 5 were renamed physics 7 and 8 (maybe)
7 was scientists and engineers. 8 was pre-meds, ie physics w/o calculus.
In the early 1970s 4 and 5 were both for scientists and engineers. 8 for pre-meds existed back then too.
We were on quarter system, so there was 4ABCDE and 5ABCDE. But only 8AB, I think.

My "funny" story is that I didn't not actually graduate with physics degree since I failed my last semester advanced lab course.
I had to explain all this to the graduate admissions people at IU and hope I still was able to start in the fall.
Luckily I had all the requirements done for the astronomy degree
