Also, SF Signal – our expansion Women's volleyball team – announced their venue this morning. Bill Graham Civic.
(I'd been thinking something like USF Memorial, but this is pretty cool. and super convenient for me! I like in the Castro and bike past the Civic to/from work :-)
In my The Score app, there was a FIBA World Cup section. I clicked on it to follow the games – it was in Berlin, so hard to watch live – and it was Wembanyama blah blah. I.e., the Men's WC :-/
most/all games were on HBOMax?
tbh, I didn't watch much, but did follow the results.
I was proud of my daughter for rooting for France in the final game. Two Valks on French team...and one Caitlyn Clark on the US team.
(We aren't fans of hers, but in talking to a couple of Valks' fans in line to get Valks-branded library cards the other day, seems that she's been less whiny lately. I don't envy her the stress of the spotlight she's had on her the last few years! Her skills and (prob) Great White Hope as well.)
Fittingly, in a game in which the Dodgers secured the NL West crown, they did so in the dominant manner in which they’ve won this division—this season and in many other campaigns—beating the Reds 8-2 in the final game of this road trip.
I learned today that Josh Allen is now 18th all time in career rushing touchdowns. If he gets two more rushing TDs, he'll tie Marshawn at 17th all time.
That stat is bananas for a quarterback to have. Bananas. I wonder how many HOF RBs he's already ahead of.
One of the weird things about NYC is that each of its five boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island) is also its own county (New York County, Kings County, Queens County, Bronx County, and Richmond County, respectively).
I can't think of another place in America like that. Usually cities are within counties, not the other way around.
Not really. The City of New York handles all functions that a county is responsible in the rest of the state.
There's a County Supreme Court, but that might be the only actual thing still tied to the county besides the Office of the Borough President, which has very little actual power and is mostly an advocate.
The Staten Island Yankees used to play short season low-A ball in a lovely ballpark on the North Shore near the ferry. The Manhattan skyline is framed between the foul poles. What a great cheap and fun summer activity it was to take the ferry to Staten Island and watch minor league baseball.
Too bad MLB hates its fans and generally ruins everything. MLB cancelled its affiliation with the SI Yankees as part of the great minor league baseball contraction. The SI Yankees were abolished as a team. The unaffiliated Staten Island FerryHawks have started up in their place, but it isn't the same.
Staten Island is home to a disproportionate number of cops and firefighters. In possibly related news, it's by far the most conservative borough. Every few years, officials in Staten Island will make noise about seceding from the City of New York. Once I recall they even fired a cannon in the general direction of Manhattan at the press conference. Of course it's always just bluster.
Compared to other boroughs, Staten Island feels downright suburban. And as rents and home prices in places such as Brooklyn have gotten crushingly expensive, many people moved to Staten Island and bought a home.
You can tell who's from Brooklyn because they hang out on in the front yard/stoop. People who were raised on Staten Island hang out in the backyard.
I do like the Staten Island Ferry. You get great views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and busy New York harbor. It's free to ride, and they have a bar onboard.
many years ago we did the 5 boro bike tour that ended in SI. we ended up there for 4-5 hours extra hours because the ferries coming back to Manhattan all decided to break that day.
aside from that, in the 25+ years we have been living in NYC area, i have only ever driven thru SI on the way to somewhere else.
I tried to go to the inspiration for Nonnas, once, but couldn't get in. It's a restaurant on Staten Island near the ferry where real grandmas do the cooking. Netflix made the story into a movie staring Vince Vaughn. I think when it started, it was all old Italian ladies - now it's grandmas from all over the world cooking their family recipes. Amazing concept.
BERKELEY, Calif. – The California women's soccer team faced No. 3 Wake Forest in a Thursday evening matchup at Edwards Stadium, with the Golden Bears falling 3-1.
Wake Forest opened the scoring in the 35th minute. Neither team found the back of the net again in the first half, sending the Demon Deacons into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
After a second-round exit at the NCAA Championship in May, the California men's tennis team will open its fall campaign at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The tournament, which begins Saturday, will have a draw size of the following:
Maggie Kane, the Stacy Savides Director of Women's Tennis, announced Thursday that former Golden Bear Maegan Manasse, a five-time All-American, will be joining the coaching staff.
"We are incredibly excited to welcome Maegan back to Cal and have her join our coaching staff," Kane said. "She had an outstanding career as a Golden Bear and went on to compete professionally, so she brings a wealth of experience and perspective that will be incredibly valuable to our student-athletes."
The No. 18 California field hockey team returns to California this week for a neutral-site matchup against the defending back-to-back national champion and No. 1-ranked Northwestern. The Golden Bears and Wildcats will face off at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday at UC Davis.

Elite volleyball is so fun to watch. You should totally go.
I've already placed two $50 deposits for two season tix :-)
If you're out here during the season, hit me up and we can check out a game!
My daughter is into VB. she plays, but is just learning. not like competitive or anything!
Altho (in my day) I preferred the "score only on serve" scoring. Not a fan of "every serve gets a point" scoring
Valks back in action tonight. After like a 3-week break for FIBA world Cup.
I don't recall seeing any coverage of the FIBA World Cup. I see now that USA won the gold.

Giants with the travel day to LA for the 3 game series tonight.

Just the Giants 21 preventing 14 straight NL West championships.
Bills offense looked good. Lions defense, not so good.
was in transit thru various airports last night and caught some chunks of the game.

Seems dumb for the television overlords to put both the Bills and Syracuse on the same Thursday night. It's hard enough for Syracuse as is...

we are headed to the NE Kingdom of VT today. my wife suggested taking the bikes and doing a 20 mi gravel ride.

Staten Island
Never been. Would like to see what it's like.
Have you been to New Jersey? If so, you've been to SI.
I've been through NJ and visited my cousin in I think New Brunswick?

Do they have a county board layer of government?
Not really. The City of New York handles all functions that a county is responsible in the rest of the state.
There's a County Supreme Court, but that might be the only actual thing still tied to the county besides the Office of the Borough President, which has very little actual power and is mostly an advocate.

What the Hell is 'Gabagool,' and Why Does Tony Soprano Talk That Way
"Gabagool" is Italian-American slang for capicola (also spelled capocollo), a traditional Italian dry-cured pork cold cut.
