The two best teams on our schedule both lost.

SMU lost to L'ville, UVA lost to WVU.

Newellbany's avatar

whoops - meant to file this under Other College

FiatSlug's avatar

Both of those games are on the road, 3 weeks apart -

October 24 - at SMU

October 31 - vs. NC State

November 7 - BYE

November 14 - at Virginia

NC State's loss to Vandy might be the most inexplicable brain fart way to lose I've ever seen. If you haven't seen it, check it out.

FiatSlug's avatar

I could barely believe it when I did see it. Clearly, the QB had no plan for what to do in that situation. I expect him to slowly retreat to the back of the end zone so that he could step out or be pushed out as time expired.

EDIT: NC State visits Cal Memorial on October 31. I wonder what strange occurrence will happen in that game.

Newellbany's avatar

I remember the end of a Tedford-era Cal game where the Bears had a slight lead (more than 2) with only a few seconds on the clock. If they took a knee, the other team would get the ball back with a potential for a hail mary. (The ball was around midfield.)

Cal snapped it, and the QB turned around 180 degrees and threw the ball 45 yards straight backwards to a receiver standing in Cal's own endzone. The WR caught it, watched the clock expire, and then stepped out of the back of the endzone for a safety, ending the game and securing the Cal win.

So smart. And Tedford said after the game that they had practiced that play. Incredible.

heyalumnigo's avatar

That was UCLA 02 (?) or 04. I happen to be at that game. Was a great game.

FiatSlug's avatar

That was my vague recollection, too. I think it was UCLA in '02, though I'm not certain.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think maybe you're right. I only went to a couple of games that year which I think were UCLA and Furd. Both big Tedford wins. So I think it was 02. I think my landlord gifted me the UCLA tickets and we were gone by 04 so it must have been 02.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

That was a crazy ending that never should have happened.

That being said, college sports produces such madness from time to time

In besting Belichick and UNC, Dabo says "I'm not dead yet!"

Maybe Cal will finish the job on Friday.

Tangtpt's avatar

The only things I wanted this past Saturday were (1) Cal to rest its starters in the second half; and (2) Clemson to play its starters its entire game against UNC. Check on both.

Oh, and it bears noting that Dabo's comment was made AT HOME.

Just sayin...

Newellbany's avatar

It was great scheduling to have the FCS game the week before a Friday game. Cheers to whoever was responsible.

I should clarify that Dabo probably didn't actually say "I'm not dead yet". I'm just imagining him as the guy in the cart in Monte Python and the Holy Grail in the "Bring out your dead" scene.

U$C only beat Rutgers by a touchdown. The same Rutgers that lost to UMass.

watched much of the LSU-TCU game. it seemed to be the only good evening game on Sat.

TCU goes out to early lead, LSU comes back to tie, TCU wins it at the end. Lane Kiffin seemed pretty diplomatic and even nice in his post-game comments.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Some of the nicest (to your face) home fans we've seen.

Newellbany's avatar

The Athletic has a fun article today about how great The Grove at Ole Miss is. And it is great. Their fans were the most welcoming home fans I think I've ever seen.

But the best part of the article is the snippet at the end that throws shade on them. From the story...

LSU fans, meanwhile, have been circulating an anonymously authored takedown of Ole Miss fans and The Grove that says in part: “They seem genuinely convinced they’re members of some landed Southern aristocracy because they own a blazer, drink bourbon and once stood near a chandelier. That’s what makes Ole Miss arrogance so spectacular. Texas arrogance is backed by money, academics, and championships. Alabama arrogance is backed by the greatest football dynasty the sport has ever seen. Ole Miss arrogance is backed by a bow tie, a tailgate, and a deeply held conviction that putting on loafers magically transforms a Mississippi redneck into a member of the British peerage.”

Wiata78's avatar

Reading that correlates with my impression about LSU and Old Miss. Old Miss seems to have more status in Mississippi than LSU has in Louisiana, even though it would seem to have no basis in reality.

Newellbany's avatar

Ole Miss has a massive let-down-game risk this week in the Swamp vs. Florida. Vegas seems to agree... they have Florida at -3, even though Ole Miss is 17 spots higher in the rankings.

Newellbany's avatar

Pete Golding does throw off some Sonny Dykes vibes. I get it.

Plus, I think HSB road-tripped to both schools for Cal games, recently.

Charles Earns Double-Double; Valkyries Win Final Regular Season Home Game Against Storm (70-57)

https://valkyries.wnba.com/news/gameday-recap-20260919

The Golden State Valkyries wrapped up their final home game of the regular season with a dominating 70-57 victory over the Seattle Storm on Saturday night at Chase Center. Tonight's win marks the Valkyries becoming the first team to hold its opponents under 70 points or fewer in six straight games since the Liberty in 2017, continuing to prove why they are the best defensive team in the league.

They play league leading Minnesota twice to be end the season

MoriBear's avatar

No, GSV plays PDX and LA. MIN plays IND 2x

To get the 1 Seed, we need to win out and IND needs to sweep. MIN has the tiebreaker.

Luckily IND is battling for the 4 Seed (home court in Round 1), so I put the odds at…18% ;-)

Tugboat shines — just not the brightest (Giants lose to the Dodgers 3-1)

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/san-francisco-giants-scores-standings/111828/tugboat-shines-just-not-the-brightest

Believe it or not, the Giants led for the majority of Sunday’s finale against the Dodgers. In this feebled state, dragging our way to the finish line, that feels like a kind-a, sort-a win.

Better late than never: Dodgers offense pounces on the Giants’ bullpen in win (3-1)

https://www.truebluela.com/dodgers-scores-standings/124954/tommy-edman-home-run-emmet-sheehan-win-giants-recap

Repeating the trend of these series’ first two games, the Dodgers didn’t take the lead until the second half of the game—this time keeping their scoring to nearly the minimum needed to overcome the Giants, sweeping their rivals with a 3-1 victory that relied heavily on Emmet Sheehan’s work as the bulk man, following Jack Dreyer.

both defending world champs in individual time trial repeat as champs.

Reusser (Swiss woman) and Evenpeol (Belgian) both pretty dominant.

Evenpeol wins record 4th straight TT worlds and has a chance to repeat his Olympic double at the road race on Sun. should be a fantastic race even w/ Pogacar out.

The Train postgame concert was tremendously fun. We stayed in our seats (Section Q) instead of going down to the field. The crowd was larger than I could have ever dreamed and it seemed like everyone had a great time. It was a wonderfully surprising end to what could've been a dud of an afternoon.

I gotta think it's hard for east coast teams to play night games on the west coast. I mean, I have to take a pregame nap to make it through a 10:30pm ET kickoff and I'm just sitting.

Miami did ok. And that was with the Q4 comeback, surprisingly!
