Now, if the poll had excluded airborne conveyances, then it makes sense that 10,000 feet might be an upper limit. Even then, though, if you've hike Mount Whitney's summit you've been above 14,000 feet.
I climbed most of the way up Mt Shasta 12,500 (summit is just over 14,000). This was in 1982. The guys I was with said we can go to the top next year. Havenβt been back since.
