Had a call at 7, then had to go to my oral surgeon to check my implant post. Went to coffee shop/empanada place near by in Castro Valley. Came back but then have to go back to Castro Valley to see my dentist for a cleaning at 3. Means I miss the first hour of the Dodgers game. So just joining the DBD now for a little bit.
What would drive me to getting a Nobel prize is not the prize itself, but the parking spot on campus!! Is it only for professors or any Cal affiliated Nobel prize winner?
I wonder if any of them park in somebody else's NL spot from time to time. Like, if they have to be on the other side of campus or something. I'll bet they all know each other's cars.
what my thesis advisor had to say of the physics prize
I'm kind of surprised that Steve Barwick was not included in the prize - he was the driver of that technique for many years, well before Francis could find McMurdo on a map. All Francis did (no small thing of course) was to take Steve's work and implement it at the next scale up. I think as time passes people (even the people who nominate Nobel Prize candidates) forget their history.
There’s a Cal Nobel Prize story I remember from biochemistry and biophysics classes at Cal. It concerns Melvin Calvin, Berkeley professor and winner of the 1961 prize in in chemistry. Many of you will remember the name from the Calvin cycle in photosynthesis.
Back in the day, in my biochem class we were taught this was called the Calvin-Benson cycle. In biophysics class, the professor said this was the Calvin-Bassham cycle.
Here’s an excerpt from Wikipedia:
In his 2011 television history of botany for the BBC, Timothy Walker, director of the University of Oxford Botanic Garden, criticised Calvin's treatment of Andrew Benson, claiming that Calvin had got the credit for Benson's work after firing him, and had failed to mention Benson's role when writing his autobiography decades later.[11] Benson himself has also mentioned being fired by Calvin, and has complained about not being mentioned in his autobiography.[12]
…this award has been much criticized for not including Calvin’s colleagues James Bassham and Andrew Benson, who were heavily involved in the discovery.
I'm pretty much locked in on the 100-day streak. Sudden realization: if I achieve the 100-day streak, it will be November 16, a Monday. That's only 4 days before my last day in the office.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto continued his postseason dominance with seven strong innings and the Dodgers homered twice in their best showing against Chris Sale this season, beating the Atlanta Braves 3-1 on Tuesday night in Game 3 of the National League Division Series at Truist Park.
Two C-USA games tonight, but one of them (NMSU @ FIU) will be played at Pitbull Stadium.
Not aware of any company by that name, I looked it up and learned that the Miami-based recording artist Pitbull purchased the naming rights for $1.2 million, annually.
This will be the most amazing thing I will learn today.
Great Offense popularized by Dean Smith before the NCAA implemented the shot clock. 4 players on the corner and a great ball handler that can dribble around.

At the dentist now waiting for my cleaning. Watching the start of the game until I get called back
Nobel week continues

I'm pretty sure you have to be faculty at Cal who has won a Nobel Prize to get an NL sticker and spot.

Steve Barwick is co-author on a bunch of papers from my grad school research collaboration group

i am guessing this happen in some form every year, someone deserving but not in the eyes or awareness of committee
sadly, i am sure it has happened disproportionately to women ..

Harrumph. Comparing mine to yours, you'd think I'd get a higher Luck score for having solved in 3. But NOOOOOOOOOOO!
Also achieved - Sea of Greens (x66), Beat the Bot (x25), and 60-day streak.

It’s gotten to where I look as forward to seeing him pitch as I do to Shohei.
GBBR!
His control is so good right now. He's playing chess in setting up hitters.

4 Corners

less great from the perspective of the fans, right?
Depends on which team you're rooting for. It was probably one of the reasons they instituted the shot clock.
not the 4 corners, but i have been to Winslow AZ made famous by the Eagles song.
the closest i have been is Southwestern CO in Telluride about 120 miles away
Great old railroad hotel & restaurant in Winslow: https://www.laposada.org/.
My spouse and I wandered in for a memorable meal there more than a decade ago…
+1 for La Posada.
Bet you were a fine sight to see. 😉. Was she driving a flatbed Ford?
she was, but didnt slow down ...
it's ok. i had a lot of other women on my mind
