Just drank a whole medium hot coffee from Dunkin before discovering that a foot-long hair had been pinned by the lid - half in half out.

So it's been great knowing y'all but this is is prolly it for me.

musings in the age of AI

Newellbany's avatar

AI is scary good at making jingles

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

good read about AI and coding

https://htmx.org/essays/yes-and/

A question I am increasingly getting from relatives, friends and students is:

Given AI, should I still consider becoming a computer programmer?

My response to this is: “Yes, and…”

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Computer programming is, fundamentally, about two things:

Problem-solving using computers

Learning to control complexity while solving these problems

I have a hard time imagining a future where knowing how to solve problems with computers and how to control the complexity of those solutions is less valuable than it is today, so I think it will continue to be a viable career even with the advent of AI tools.

Newellbany's avatar

Totally. Study the theory, not any one tool.

I will accept that it might be harder to get a foot in the door than it used to be.

heyalumnigo's avatar

QB controversy?

Justbear's avatar

It's great to have such a capable backup. I know Fernando started out as a backup who became a starter mid season, but that was due to incapable starters (QB1 and QB2) ahead of him. This is the first time we have two capable QB options in a long time. Maybe first time since 2008?

sycasey's avatar

I don't see any world where JKS is not the presumed starter once he's healthy. If he struggles even in the McCann offense then maybe we have something.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think JKS resumes QB1 activities as soon as he's healthy, but I wonder if Tosh will be more willing to put Brousseau in if JKS struggles.

Traffic (and commute)

do you commute? how long is it?

Newellbany's avatar

10 min. 12 with traffic.

It would take a lot (money or desperation) to get me to have a longer commute. I walked to work for 13 years of my career.

space_lab's avatar

15 minute bike commute, mostly on a separated bike path. I love it, even when it’s raining.

sycasey's avatar

100% work from home these days. When I did commute it was typically like 40 minutes from Oakland to downtown SF on public transit.

dcblue's avatar

used to take Metro in in the morning then change and run home in the afternoon. Carried four changes of clothes home on the Metro on Friday.

heyalumnigo's avatar

10 seconds, 15 feet? Out of bed, into the next bedroom, boom! Actually I'd rather go into an office, but with gas prices I'm glad I don't (right now).

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

taking the train to NYC this morning, 20 min walk, 40 min train ride, another 15 min of subway.

i was in the car about to drive in to midtown and the GPS tells me it is 1 hr 15 min which almost always gets worse along the way.

i only do this commute 1-2 times per week mostly if i have dinner plans or some in person appt.

Guess 4 > XXXXX cut the number of words to six, but it was a risky guess: From this point, you may need some luck to solve the puzzle.

Guess 5 > You’ve narrowed it down to three remaining words and you still have one guess left. At this point, you will need some luck to solve the puzzle.

Oof...brutal start time.

Newellbany's avatar

When I was at UT for grad school we had a couple 11am kickoffs and the tailgate was breakfast tacos and bloody marys. It was too early.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

breakfast tacos and bloody marys sounds pretty good

sycasey's avatar

Have to expect a few of these in the ACC.

I think the SMU people are more frustrated. They are sick of always having games at 11am local time on The CW.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

WF ranked 21 and SMU ranked 24 next 2 weeks.

at least WF is at home

Dodgers need Brewers help to score, can’t stop William Contreras in NLCS Game 2 loss

https://www.truebluela.com/dodgers-scores-standings/126722/william-contreras-yoshinobu-yamamoto-logan-henderson-nlcs-game-2

Best laid plans went awry very early in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series, the sloppiest and wildest game of the Dodgers postseason to date. In a game with four lead changes and two ties, the Dodgers couldn’t get a big hit to save their life, while William Contreras had three different run-scoring hits in the Brewers’ 7-4 win at American Family Field on Monday afternoon in Milwaukee.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

they say they might bench Ohtani?

seems unlikely to me unless he is hurt. and even then, Kurt Gibson was hurt ..

heyalumnigo's avatar

He definitely is hurt. Left knee and right bicep. The main reason it kept him from pitching. He's swinging at pitches out of the zone, especially up and in. Josue De Paula, a 21 year old, is kinda like Soto. Very good discipline and takes his walks.

Their main problem is not getting hits with RISP. Something like 2 in the playoffs. Won't win games that way. Will Smith has 1 hit. Everyone except for Pages is struggling.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Niners, Vikings, and Chiefs are only undefeated teams left after week 5. Chiefs had a bye.

sycasey's avatar

Vikings seem a bit fraudulent to me, though obviously with that record we will probably see them in the playoffs.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Dolphins, Chargers, Titans all winless at 0-5

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

didnt watch, but i hear Josh Allen put on quite the run/pass show on MNF last night as they beat the Rams in OT.

Ram are now 2-3 after starting the season as Super Bowl favorites.

napabear's avatar

Amazing that the 49ers are 2 games up on Seattle and 3 on the Rams just 5 games into the season with a ton of injuries. Hopefully they can carry their momentum all the way to February. Use McCaffrey SPARINGLY

Newellbany's avatar

I wish bad things on Sean McVay for doing our boy Jared Goff dirty. I know it worked out for all parties involved, but he didn't need to be a robot jerkface.
