wooooo HBD HAG!!!!!

Cugel's avatar

HB HAG! - what are you doing to celebrate?

heyalumnigo's avatar

Thanks. Not sure. Got Indian last night with No 3 and my mom. I took the Miata out of hibernation yesterday so maybe I'll go get some gas and go for a nice drive through the east bay hills.

I'm thinking of getting the timing belt and water pump changed. I'm not ready to tackle that job myself. But I'll probably do the plugs and wires soon myself since I don't know when they were changed last.

The Eastern Washington / Idaho game was all types of fun, including... uh... this.

We finished The Lady and the Dale last week. It's a pretty good four-part documentary series on Liz Carmichael, former CEO of Twentieth Century Motor Car Corporation (maker of the three-wheeled Dale) who was convicted of theft and fraud.

The story had a number of similarities to HBO's recent documentary series on Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos: a strange and charismatic woman builds a company centered around a revolutionary product, although the veneer quickly comes apart culminating in several criminal charges for the CEO.

I have finally started to watch the acclaimed SciFi series The Expanse. All 5 existing seasons are on Amazon and they have already announced a 6th and final season, but I have just finished the first 3 (which first aired on SyFy). The show is great, dramatic, and more realistic science-wise than a lot of other things, but it's perhaps a bit "too real" with regards to the futility of "doing the right thing" that I would have enjoyed this a lot more if the real world is in a better place.

In other words, this is a space opera that is too real for me, having experienced 2020 and 2021 thus far.

Cugel's avatar

The 5th season which we just finished a few days ago might have been the best so far.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I'm looking forward to it. I did accidentally see the news that one of the lead actors (the guy who plays Alex) is out of season 6 due to sexual misconducts. I think he might be recast.

Cugel's avatar

Uh, yeah he will be...

Cugel's avatar

Heh, but it's a great show.

Safety Not Guaranteed (9/19, WNB). Watched it because it got great reviews. Yes, the metaphors are clever. Mark Duplass does a wonderful job playing a horribly akward person. Aubrey Plaza does an akward job playing a normal person. Not a fan of her acting. I didn't see what all the hype was about and thought it quite average.

Modern Love (17/19 W/B, Prime, S1). I'm 3 episodes in. I can't think of a better made, wonderfully written/acted pieces that made me thoroughly miserable watching them because they were so raw, real, and sympathetic that I wanted to crawl into a hole. I can't tell if I love it or hate it.

Rango (19/19, Netflix, W/B). I've seen it before, but goddamn if it is not a great film. So smartly written, acted, and animated. Letting Depp clearly go full 110% Depp in a satire is so much fun. It started auto-playing when I paused on the home screen and I got sucked in.

heyalumnigo's avatar

From the couple of interviews I've seen Aubrey Plaza give on the late night shows, it seems like on P&R she was just playing herself.

sycasey's avatar

I felt like Safety Not Guaranteed worked well up to a point, but the ending was kind of a cop-out that didn't address anything. I was pretty floored when they gave the director the keys to a whole Star Wars movie (and then revoked them later).

Transformers War for Cybertron on Netflix

for those who like this sort of stuff, there is a new 3 part animated series

1 - Siege - came out last fall

2 - Earthrise - currently out

3 - Kingdom

for lack of a better word, there is more "character development" than your typical Transformers stuff.

Ruey Yen's avatar

Optimus Prime made so many dumb decisions in part 1, that I still haven't got myself to watch the second part. I think the excuse is that Optimus is still a young leader in part 1, but I had a hard time accepting the writing in this show.

Terence's avatar

Plans for the weekend: Nomadland, Minari, I May Destroy You. (I may not be emotionally ready for this)

Cugel's avatar

I May Destroy is a tough watch in many parts; but it's also great. I wouldn't binge it.

Tangtpt's avatar

Started watching "Roots" yesterday and recorded the rest. I remember how it was such a phenomenon when it first aired in the '70s, but I never saw it until now.

Cugel's avatar

Really enjoying Ted Lasso

heyalumnigo's avatar

It's a great show. I can't wait for season 2.

sycasey's avatar

It had a lot more depth than I ever expected.

SGBear's avatar

What was your family's remedy for a cold (eg, chicken soup)?

Berkelium97's avatar

Ginger ale when I was younger. Now, hot cocoa with a splash of tequila.

SGBear's avatar

Campbell's chicken soup, which was later upgraded to Progresso chicken noodle soup. Most of the time, I had to make it. In retrospect, I am wondering if my step-mother could have put any less effort into caring for me when sick even though she was a stay-at-home parent.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

is there something going on Hearst Ave?

junior year, i lived in a crappy little house a few doors down from Oscar's, the greasy burger joint that was replaced by the salad place at the corner of Shattuck and Hearst.

the had the BEST fries, and i dont even like fries.

i am not sure why i agreed to this, but the house had no heat, only a wood burning stove. i am sure it was probably some health violation.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Oscar's did have the best burgers and fries. I remember HSB's old roommate coming up to visit from UCLA and taking the ketchup bottle (the squeeze ones with the pointy tip) and putting ketchup along the length of each fry.

SGBear's avatar

I lived 3 blocks from Oscar's for a year (Virginia @ Milvia). Oscar's fries were indeed great.

SGBear's avatar

Actually, It was Lincoln, not Virginia. I was off by a block.

heyalumnigo's avatar

HSB and I were right around the corner from you. MLK between Francisco and Milvia, right next to the beads store.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I like Oscar's (and lived a block from there for 2 years), but I think I ended up getting my burger fix more at Barney's than there. I'm glad that it made a cameo in the pilot of the TV show Parenthood, based in Berkeley but not shot there outside of the pilot.

I am also somewhat offended that it got replaced by a SweetGreen. Since I was living in the DC area, I had more exposure to the DC-based organic food chain before they invaded Berkeley with that store.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Yeah there were very few shots of Berkeley in that show. I have a hard time thinking of where in Berkeley the parent's house would even fit.

heyalumnigo's avatar

That was a really good show though.

Scootie's avatar

I'm sorry, YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT how is this even possible

Terence's avatar

My friend lived right across the street from Oscar's. A friend of Billy Joe Armstrong's lived downstairs and we would see him occasionally (post Dookie - so he had a brand new Jeep Cherokee)

goldenone's avatar

Oscars was good. I used to get cheeseburgers once in awhile, fries, and a vanilla shake.

Today in Covid

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

wife is getting her first shot tomorrow at Pfizer HQ.

rocksanddirt's avatar

both Mrs and youngest got the first shot. both had a pretty strong reaction (sore arm, general aches).

goldenone's avatar

My mom's 2nd shot was Thursday. She is feeling better today after a couple of days of side effects.

SGBear's avatar

What's on your mind?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Achilles surgery tomorrow.

was skiing thru some powdery trees at Steamboat 2 wks ago and had an awkward fall.

4-6 months recovery.

i am not upset about the surgery or the recovery, more the loss of opportunity to do stuff, be outside, plan things ...

Ruey Yen's avatar

Good luck! Maybe by the time that you're fully recovered, the world will be almost back to "normal".

Berkelium97's avatar

Good luck. That does not sound pleasant.

Peetyjay's avatar

That sounds terrible! Good luck on the surgery. I have a nagging shoulder issue. I can still do most things but climbing and I assume only surgery would fix it. I constantly ask myself whether I just continue enjoying what I can do and give up climbing, or have surgery, give up everything for a while, and hope the surgery and PT would allow me to climb again. I'm not big on doctors or hospitals so this isn't helping either.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think my shoulder is jacked up as well, probably from throwing batting practice to No 3 and his teammates for 5+ years. I really can only throw a baseball about 90 feet now. And I don't think it's supposed to click when I rotate my arm up. But, since I'm not playing softball anymore, it isn't worth getting surgery. It doesn't impact everyday life.

Maybe PT would help it some but other than throwing with him, it doesn't bother me. He just takes the bucket of balls with him and walks further and further away to long toss.

g.oso's avatar

sounds like crepitus which is what I have in both my shoulders

Cugel's avatar

Don't skimp on the PT exercises afterwards.

Fire Starkey's avatar

I blew mine playing soccer several years ago. Didn't need surgery but it was still about 5 months before back to normal. And frankly, my body hasn't been the same since so definitely keep active once you're able to get back to it.

Scootie's avatar

Alec and Hilaria Baldwin just had their sixth baby, five months after having their fifth. WTF? There's some weird shit going on in that household.

DC Trojan's avatar

maybe she's pretending it's her child like she's pretending to be from Spain

rocksanddirt's avatar

I'm thinking that perhaps they are not all coming from Hilaria's hoohaa.

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

heyalumnigo's avatar

"hints"? You know for sure for his ego he's running. No way in hell his ego can stand losing.

heyalumnigo's avatar

And I did see Gov Rick Scott said the republican party is one of the voters not of Trump. Yeah good luck with that.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Why create a 3rd party when you already control the GQP. All the anti trumpers can go form their own party if they want but the hostile takeover is complete, they lost.

Terence's avatar

NFC West QBs now have to face Bosa, Donald, Watt. Ugh.

goldenone's avatar

Even less chance for the Weav to break the rotation, but he did sign a reserve/futures contract for around $800,000 I read.

Justbear's avatar

Evan can learn from Watt. And Watt has tendency to miss games with injuries.

Freshman Sampson Zheng. Cinderella story. The Cabo Collegiate crowd has gone silent. 150 yards tees on the 16th and he's got a... it looks like a 9 iron. It looks like a mirac... It's in the hole! IT'S IN THE HOLE!

https://twitter.com/CalMensGolf/status/1366445463147225092

Terence's avatar

I have weirdly lost distance in my irons. 150 was an easy 7 for me over the last 20 years. . . now I'm hitting an easy 6 and still ending up short.

Women's Gymnastic's Wednesday meet at Stanford has been canceled. We are denied a very likely Cal victory. Both teams said that their weekend meets are currently on, so I don't know why this one is taken off the schedule.

Berkelium97's avatar

Not too many Cal alumni in Northern MD but I did see a car on Saturday with a "GO CAL" license plate and a couple Cal stickers on the windows.

Beach Volleyball started the season with 2 dominant wins over Oregon and UC Davis, both via 5-0 sweeps. Dating back to last year, the Bears have won 11 straight matches. They have also won 20 straight at home, a streak that will last until 2022. Yes, this was the only home meets of the season as Cal will play in 3 tournaments this year at Stanford in lieu of more home matches.

Lacrosse started the season with 2 home losses: 14-8 to UC Davis and 12-11 to San Diego State.

https://twitter.com/CalSB/status/1365876512600195075

Cal really should have won both games vs. Stanford. Stanford was gifting Cal the first game but there was a really bad base-running blunder that squandered the scoring chance in the top of the 6th.

I squeezed in a my weekend long run between the rain Saturday afternoon. On the way back I saw a young woman out walking wearing a Cal sweatshirt and I said "Go Bears." She pulled out her ear bud and asked "what?" I pointed to her sweatshirt and repeated Go Bears and she kind of chuckled and returned the greeting.
