Thanks. Not sure. Got Indian last night with No 3 and my mom. I took the Miata out of hibernation yesterday so maybe I'll go get some gas and go for a nice drive through the east bay hills.

I'm thinking of getting the timing belt and water pump changed. I'm not ready to tackle that job myself. But I'll probably do the plugs and wires soon myself since I don't know when they were changed last.

We finished The Lady and the Dale last week. It's a pretty good four-part documentary series on Liz Carmichael, former CEO of Twentieth Century Motor Car Corporation (maker of the three-wheeled Dale) who was convicted of theft and fraud.

The story had a number of similarities to HBO's recent documentary series on Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos: a strange and charismatic woman builds a company centered around a revolutionary product, although the veneer quickly comes apart culminating in several criminal charges for the CEO.

I have finally started to watch the acclaimed SciFi series The Expanse. All 5 existing seasons are on Amazon and they have already announced a 6th and final season, but I have just finished the first 3 (which first aired on SyFy). The show is great, dramatic, and more realistic science-wise than a lot of other things, but it's perhaps a bit "too real" with regards to the futility of "doing the right thing" that I would have enjoyed this a lot more if the real world is in a better place.

In other words, this is a space opera that is too real for me, having experienced 2020 and 2021 thus far.

The 5th season which we just finished a few days ago might have been the best so far.

Safety Not Guaranteed (9/19, WNB). Watched it because it got great reviews. Yes, the metaphors are clever. Mark Duplass does a wonderful job playing a horribly akward person. Aubrey Plaza does an akward job playing a normal person. Not a fan of her acting. I didn't see what all the hype was about and thought it quite average.

Modern Love (17/19 W/B, Prime, S1). I'm 3 episodes in. I can't think of a better made, wonderfully written/acted pieces that made me thoroughly miserable watching them because they were so raw, real, and sympathetic that I wanted to crawl into a hole. I can't tell if I love it or hate it.

Rango (19/19, Netflix, W/B). I've seen it before, but goddamn if it is not a great film. So smartly written, acted, and animated. Letting Depp clearly go full 110% Depp in a satire is so much fun. It started auto-playing when I paused on the home screen and I got sucked in.

I felt like Safety Not Guaranteed worked well up to a point, but the ending was kind of a cop-out that didn't address anything. I was pretty floored when they gave the director the keys to a whole Star Wars movie (and then revoked them later).

Transformers War for Cybertron on Netflix

for those who like this sort of stuff, there is a new 3 part animated series

1 - Siege - came out last fall

2 - Earthrise - currently out

3 - Kingdom

for lack of a better word, there is more "character development" than your typical Transformers stuff.

Optimus Prime made so many dumb decisions in part 1, that I still haven't got myself to watch the second part. I think the excuse is that Optimus is still a young leader in part 1, but I had a hard time accepting the writing in this show.

junior year, i lived in a crappy little house a few doors down from Oscar's, the greasy burger joint that was replaced by the salad place at the corner of Shattuck and Hearst.

the had the BEST fries, and i dont even like fries.

i am not sure why i agreed to this, but the house had no heat, only a wood burning stove. i am sure it was probably some health violation.

I am also somewhat offended that it got replaced by a SweetGreen. Since I was living in the DC area, I had more exposure to the DC-based organic food chain before they invaded Berkeley with that store.

Peetyjay's avatar

That sounds terrible! Good luck on the surgery. I have a nagging shoulder issue. I can still do most things but climbing and I assume only surgery would fix it. I constantly ask myself whether I just continue enjoying what I can do and give up climbing, or have surgery, give up everything for a while, and hope the surgery and PT would allow me to climb again. I'm not big on doctors or hospitals so this isn't helping either.

Expand full comment
heyalumnigo's avatar

I think my shoulder is jacked up as well, probably from throwing batting practice to No 3 and his teammates for 5+ years. I really can only throw a baseball about 90 feet now. And I don't think it's supposed to click when I rotate my arm up. But, since I'm not playing softball anymore, it isn't worth getting surgery. It doesn't impact everyday life.

Maybe PT would help it some but other than throwing with him, it doesn't bother me. He just takes the bucket of balls with him and walks further and further away to long toss.

Beach Volleyball started the season with 2 dominant wins over Oregon and UC Davis, both via 5-0 sweeps. Dating back to last year, the Bears have won 11 straight matches. They have also won 20 straight at home, a streak that will last until 2022. Yes, this was the only home meets of the season as Cal will play in 3 tournaments this year at Stanford in lieu of more home matches.

Lacrosse started the season with 2 home losses: 14-8 to UC Davis and 12-11 to San Diego State.
