I went out for awhile after the rain ended this afternoon. The bridge I went across has one of the exits blocked to stop people from going down to the cherry blossoms. It's blocked by a truck with a snow plow on the front. Since we've had less than an inch of snow at least the truck is getting some use. Most of the few people I saw in Georgetown were homeless folks. Even though all the stores are closed one guy I usually see walking around talking to himself had scored a cake about seven inches across with white frosting and strawberries on top. He was walking down the street eating it. Strange times.
WSU Safety Bryce Beekman (22 year-old RS-JR, started all 13 games in 2019) passes away. No announced cause of death. No stats registered vs. Cal in 2019. This is so sad.
I think I saw yesterday was the one month anniversary of the tweet saying the virus is very much under control and the stock market starting to look very good.
The 2nd half of the 2008 season when the Dodgers got Manny was ridiculous. He hit almost .400 after that. For Halloween that year or the next year, No 2 dressed up as Manny. I made dreads using yarn and attached it to a Dodgers hat. He had a Dodgers jersey tshirt and baseball pants.
I remember he hit a HR off Nolan Ryan in his first AB. And hearing Vin Scully call the playoffs back when he didn't just do the Dodgers. I remember golf and NFL. Not sure what else.
I read Fox News, Washington Examiner, and other conservative sources all the time. It's 80% opinion editorials rather than news, but it at least gives me perspective. Likewise, I read the liberal rags too. I am a moderate, so I like to see where the both edges of the world are. When I was young, I was anti-nukes. Then I read up on it and converted to pro-nukes - both weapons and energy.
The Wash Examiner used to be a pretty robust paper that was available free around town and I regularly looked at it. Now it's a glossy that comes out once a week and as you say is mostly op-eds so I look at it less often. Have only looked at their web page a few times.
Many moons ago i was pro death penalty because I think you can in fact forfeit your life by heinous crimes. In the meantime it’s become abundantly clear that our criminal justice system (sic) is entirely unsuited to make any decisions like that and I see no reason to expect that to change.
An alarmingly common conundrum on a variety of issues. The right thing to do, if done right, is often not the right thing to do because the reality is it won't get done close to right. I find practical and actionable have become my driving principals.
I used to be all in on Chief Wahoo, but I read an op-ed on how the Cleveland fanbase and community won't stop being a family or lose any of our passion just because we change a mascot or name, and that changed my mind.
Changing my opinion on my own: I used to be for federal/state funding on elections to make things "equal", now I think that's nuts, unworkable.
People have changed my mind about things, years ago in an argument that working-class Republicans (say Reagan Democrats) were "dumb" for voting that way, a FotF and Polsci prof convinced me otherwise.
This study aligns with my own highly unscientific anecdotal experience. I think this virus has been around for a couple months already and a lot of people have had it and built up immunities already. Still need to hunker down for a while but perhaps it is farther along than previously thought.
and like in korea...there were only like 30 cases...then this one germ spreading grandma decided to go to church/restaurants/take taxis 'round town...and boom, 6300 cases 'cause of her.
that's a good question that my PhD in Facebook epidemiology cannot answer. Perhaps it has mutated to become more intense or more contagious, I dont know. I have read that they are seeing mutations in the virus fairly rapidly but no idea if this is the answer to your question
"This coronavirus isn’t mutating quickly, which suggests a vaccine could offer lasting protection.
“That relative stability suggests the virus is less likely to become more or less dangerous as it spreads, and represents encouraging news for researchers hoping to create a long-lasting vaccine,” Joel Achenbach reports. Peter Thielen, a molecular geneticist at John Hopkins who has been studying the virus, said there are only about four to 10 genetic differences between the strains that have infected people in the U.S. and the original virus that spread in Wuhan. This would mean that a vaccine against it could act like immunizations against the measles or chickenpox vaccines – protecting people for a long time."
The South is gonna get hit really fucking hard by this. Florida, Georgia, Louisiana already looking scary, and it will get a lot worse over the next couple of weeks.
No perhaps about it; locking down quickly was absolutely the right thing to do, especially since the testing regime still isn't very robust. Since we aren't sure who has it, we need to lock down to prevent the spread.
Sure, there's just still some uncertainty about how much it affected the numbers. But the preliminary data looks good, especially when compared to other regions of the country.
I live in Grocerystoreville. We have 22 grocery stores within a few miles radius. Went to my favorite grocery store to restock on fresh veggies. Went at opening. About 30 people there. Everyone but me was over 60. It was worse than before. Grocery store was out of:
Sugar
Almost all canned goods
All dried goods (pasta, beans, rice)
All paper products
Chicken/turkey
Good coffee
Almond milk (both Tetra pack & fresh)
All frozen vegetables
Cookies
Still has tons of:
Fresh fruit & veg
Beef
Beer
Candy, soda
Processed foods
I'm going to Home Depot today before a Shelter-in-Place gets announced.
In the Bay Area. Went to Costco and HD yesterday. (No, it was Tues... dang time flies....) Grocers and retailers are throttling entries to encourage social distancing.
Costco restocked with TP and cleaning supplies though purchase limits apply. HD had two lines at the entrance: Contractors and DIY (this household has a contractor's license so I got to enter via the shorter line). Check-out: all go through a single line to maintain distance for benefit of the staff too; everyone calm and orderly. it's weird but they're working it out.
My fridge has NEVER been so full before. I shopped online. . . got impatient and went to the grocery store. Now I have 3 full cartons of eggs. SO MUCH KALE. I made Molly Baz's gojuchang chicken yesterday.
(I still need to go back to the grocery store - forgot to get coconut cream - I'm making some Penang curry)
Home Depot was an absolute madhouse when I went there last weekend. We might all be dead from covid in a couple months, but our lawns are going to look great and we'll have some nicely renovated houses.
It seems really random here. One day they are out of one group of things then the next day they have plenty of those things but are devoid of some others. I've been popping in every couple days and buying a few things just to try to keep up.
Wow. talk about panic buying. We were wiped out but it looks like most everything is back except for pasta, TP, hand sanitizer. Not sure about the bread since I didn't go to that aisle.
True, I just think Dems had a lot of leverage. They could have passed a House bill and kicked it over to the Senate and let them vote it down. GOP needs this more than the Dems because they're in charge.
LA Chargers unveil new logo. A light tweaking, the most noticeable being a bolt to the "A" in CHARGERS. While they don't have much of a fanbase, they beat the Rams hands down by doing so little.
With all the talent turnover and coaching turnover this offseason, the conference is going to be a delightful mess next year. No way we're worse than Arizona, UCLA, and Wazzu, though.

Cool, rainy day in the DC area. I just looked at the view from LHS on the webcam. Looks nice in the Bay.
last couple of days have been cool. Low 50s. Going to be high 50s tomorrow then into the high 60s low 70s next week. Some rain this weekend.

Who has/had the sweetest swing in MLB?
What about right-handed swings? Willie Mays had a nice one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajSdqargrms
Ryne Sandberg's was solid for a righty
I mentioned Pujols and ManRam, both righties.
I feel like Pujols is just a little too hulking to have a beautiful swing. I can see it for Manny though.
I'm gonna say Griffey. Other guys with impressive swings: Ichiro, Bonds, ManRam, Strawberry, Pujols, Yelich
Tony Gwynn as well.
Yes, he's in.
Oh yes, forgot about mr 5.5 hole.
It's going to be a lefty. My two are Ken Griffey Jr or Will Clark.
Matt Olson.
Will Clark definitely.

I remember he hit a HR off Nolan Ryan in his first AB. And hearing Vin Scully call the playoffs back when he didn't just do the Dodgers. I remember golf and NFL. Not sure what else.
Yup, Scully famously called the Dwight Clark Catch on network TV.
yeah I remember that as well. Not sure what else he did besides mlb, nfl, and golf. I wonder if he ever did NBA.
Then you have guys like Wade Boggs and Kirk Gibson who had very ungainly (but still effective) lefty swings.
but the prettiest lefty swing is still better than the prettiest righty swing.
I wonder if it would look differently if we changed the center field camera to be over the pitcher's left shoulder.
Righty swing is nice for different reasons.

The only question on this is that if it was around since January, why did it take so long for hospitals to see a surge of patients?
If only a few people have it, it takes a while to spread widely, plus there's a long incubation period.
and like in korea...there were only like 30 cases...then this one germ spreading grandma decided to go to church/restaurants/take taxis 'round town...and boom, 6300 cases 'cause of her.
Korea was also much more prepared for outbreaks than US thanks to previous close calls/outbreaks
yeah, mers was the real deal compared to covid19...basically killed 1/3 of the people that caught it.

huh, maybe my info was out of date. They have identified a 2nd strain but maybe its stopped at that
The South is gonna get hit really fucking hard by this. Florida, Georgia, Louisiana already looking scary, and it will get a lot worse over the next couple of weeks.
And California (especially the Bay Area) seems to have been effective at flattening the curve. Perhaps taking early action was a smart move!
Though I say that with the caveat that our testing still isn't great so there could be more cases hiding out there.
Marin Co says it has 53 confirmed cases but estimates that the real number is closer to 3,000.
No perhaps about it; locking down quickly was absolutely the right thing to do, especially since the testing regime still isn't very robust. Since we aren't sure who has it, we need to lock down to prevent the spread.

I am in no way a sunshine-pumper, but 30-1 on the Bears is way off...Utes, Ducks, Huskies all at home, winnable roadies @ Corvallis, Wazzu, and ASU...
I definitely don't see how WSU or Arizona have better odds. Based on what?
South is weaker at the top, means they have a better shot at playing in the Championship but not that they're a better team.
That doesn't apply to WSU.
Point taken...
I dunno man, doesn't make sense to me anymore
