Five best movies about sports, without repeating a sport

heyalumnigo's avatar

Might Ducks (I haven't seen Slap Shot)

Cugel's avatar

I'd go with Miracle for Hockey

heyalumnigo's avatar

Miracle was a good movie. I thought they did a good job.

heyalumnigo's avatar

we can get to 1000 with the discussion for baseball. I vote The Natural, though I'd say Field of Dreams and Major League are 1B and 1C.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I wonder how many other actors were in two different baseball series other than Dennis Haysbert. I guess Kevin Costner.

Cugel's avatar

Breaking Away: Cycling.

heyalumnigo's avatar

ooh...that's a good one.

DC Trojan's avatar

My wife talked me into watching that and I was pleasantly surprised

imalasmax's avatar

Motocrossed

Brink

Alley Cats Strike

Cool Runnings

Bend It Like Beckham

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Ha, just saw this. MOTOCROSSED FOREVER!!!

JP90's avatar

Noone's mentioned Chariots of Fire!

DC Trojan's avatar

It’s 90 minutes well spent

Scootie's avatar

Hoop Dreams

Any Given Sunday

Bend It Like Beckham

I, Tonya

Free Solo

Scootie's avatar

On second thought, I'm removing I, Tonya and inserting Point Break.

rocksanddirt's avatar

Caddy Shack

Major League

Talladega Nights

sycasey's avatar

Hoosiers

Jerry Maguire

Bull Durham

Raging Bull

Senna (documentary about racing, really great)

heyalumnigo's avatar

Hoosiers is a good choice for basketball. I just watched Ford v Ferrari which I really enjoyed. I have Senna downloaded but haven't watched it yet.

sycasey's avatar

Hoosiers is basically the template for the modern "Sports Movie."

DC Trojan's avatar

The movie Grand Prix, which is not that good in terms of things like “story” and “acting” basically set the standard for broadcasting motor racing and especially Formula 1.

DC Trojan's avatar

Senna is an amazing piece of work

sycasey's avatar

If this counts as a sport, also add The Wrestler.

Cugel's avatar

ALSO

You're still wrong about Holy Grail; still funnier than Life of Brian

Never forget!

sycasey's avatar

Funnier, maybe. A better movie? Nope.

Cugel's avatar

I read Eric Idle's sortabiography (pretty funny) and they had a great time filming Brian (funded by George Harrison) but were absolutely miserable during the filming of Holy Grail, which I think comes across (in a good way) at times in the film.

Cugel's avatar

A very good movie.

Cugel's avatar

You stole my movies! (4 of 5)

CruzinBears's avatar

Happy Gilmore

Little Giants

The Sandlot

Th Big Green

D2

Fire Starkey's avatar

The Damned United for soccer... far far better than Victory

Cugel's avatar

Love that movie, also LEEDS!

SGBear's avatar

What did you eat for your second dessert yesterday?

Berkelium97's avatar

1st dessert = cake (Mrs. Bk97 is relieving her quarantine-induced insanity by baking), 2nd dessert = scotch

Cugel's avatar

Similar, Madeleines 1st, Scotch after.

Cugel's avatar

Forgot to mention, my daughter made them and they were very tasty.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Does a second helping of homemade Sweet Potato Pie count as second dessert?

Scootie's avatar

1st dessert: chocolate chip cookies. 2nd dessert (4 hours later, no meal in between): mint chip ice cream.

rocksanddirt's avatar

Bagel with melted extra sharp cheddar

rocksanddirt's avatar

First desert was some dates.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

First dessert = chocolate cake

Second dessert = strawberries

Bluishly Gold's avatar

I might be a bit late to the realization, but does everybody else know that Marshawn Lynch is in Westworld? He has a wee part this season.

imalasmax's avatar

There is a tiny something in my left eye and has been for days and no amount of washing, sleeping, crying etc has been able to dislodge it.

Terence's avatar

i scratched a cornea last month - it was wholly uncomfortable for 4 days. and slightly uncomfortable for two weeks afterwards (especially wearing my glasses which were two years out of date)

imalasmax's avatar

I'll think twice before I use the phrase "I could do this with my eyes closed" again. It's been extra difficult to work from home with my eyes closed.

CruzinBears's avatar

Could it be part of a contact lens? My dailies will occasionally tear and I've had a piece get stuck in my eye for a couple days before. I had to literally flush my eyeball with the faucet, but it finally came out.

imalasmax's avatar

I don't wear contact lenses, but it really does feel like a bit of grit is in there.

I think I need to be better about flushing it out somehow. Shower hasn't been good enough.

FiatSlug's avatar

Oh, boy.

It might just be allergies. I thought I had something in my left eye for weeks. I couldn't locate it. Rinsing, rinsing, eye drops, etc. Had an eye exam and my optometrist asked me why my eye was irritayed. She did some testing, asked some questions about seasonal allergies and said, you're having an allergic reaction.

Wrote a prescription for eye drops (olopatadine?). Said to keep up with the drops for 2 to 4 weeks. Inside of one week I could feel a difference. Within 2 weeks the redness was nearly gone and I didn't feel like something was always in my eye.

Check with your doctor, allergist, or optometrist. It could be something very simple like an allergy.

imalasmax's avatar

Oooh, as much as I don't want to have an allergy, I think I'd prefer that over a scratched cornea

DC Trojan's avatar

This may be hard to do but try just leaving it alone. If you’ve scratched the cornea then trying to flush something out / prodding at your eye might make it worse. I learned this the hard way as part of giving up contacts

DC Trojan's avatar

also I am most certainly not a doctor but if my occasional eye woes have taught me anything, it would be "don't poke at your eye" and "if it doesn't get better soon, get an ophthalmologist to take a look.

SGBear's avatar

What time do you wake up these days?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Moved the alarm back half an hour from 6 to 6:30 with the shift to WFH. I might move it up again, as my success rate at making the daily 7am call has been 0% so far.

SGBear's avatar

M-F: whenever I wake up, but is usually no later than 7:30 am. This feels like a remarkable amount of sleep since I'm normally up at 4:30am. I used to wake up that early to hit the gym every day. Now, not so much. Imma be a big chonky boi after this shelter-at-home is done.

heyalumnigo's avatar

the usual because my calls haven't changed. 6:45 on MWTh and 545 on Tu. I don't have calls on Fri so I usually get up by 8.

Berkelium97's avatar

Around 7-ish. I used to be in the office from about 6 until 3:30, but now that I'm not commuting I start around 7-something and wrap up around 4-something. And instead of waking up in the wee hours to go to work and sleeping in a bit on the weekends, I'm now waking up around the same time every day.

CalGal2004's avatar

these days between 5:30 - 6:00 am. before CV19 it was 5 am to hit the gym by 5:30.

FiatSlug's avatar

When I'm not working anywhere from 7 to 8 am. Put another way, from sunrise to about an hour later.

DC Trojan's avatar

Any time between 6 and 8, but mostly by 7

imalasmax's avatar

Up at 9:30AM, then take my brother's dogs for a walk and start work at 10:00AM

dcblue's avatar

Feel free to ignore if too personal, but what time do you fall asleep? Just curious because everyone else seems to be between 6 and 8 in terms of getting up. I am in the 7-7:30 range.

imalasmax's avatar

My go-to-bed alarm goes off at midnight, but if I'm reading (which is most nights), then I probably won't actually go to sleep until 1-2:30AM

imalasmax's avatar

If I go to bed before my alarm, then I'm usually awake by 7:30AM

DC Trojan's avatar

That sounds very civilized

atoms's avatar

7-7:30ish... maybe half hour later than normal. Mornings have been nice and relaxed without having to get ready or commute though.

Scootie's avatar

6:45, which is new since I've been working from home (I am on vacation this week and it's still 6:45). This is about 30 minutes later than normal.

rocksanddirt's avatar

6:10. Essential worker going to work. ugh. would dearly love to be doing some WFH, even though I generally hate it.

sycasey's avatar

My children ensure that I am awake by 7 AM.

ak_A_bear's avatar

I've been all over the map for getting up. I finally buckled down the other day with personal vow - "My feet will hit the ground before 0800" and it seems to have done the trick.

SGBear's avatar

Something that you are grateful for (that isn't evergreen)

SGBear's avatar

So, an update on my sister-in-law. Her whole family has it but they did NOT get tested. They have all the classic symptoms, but were warned away from going to the hospital unless they had trouble breathing. My wife convinced them to escape to upstate NY to an AirBnB where they'll rent for several months (ride out the coronavirus + have family who can deliver to their door + have more available respirators than NYC in the near term). That's 9 people I know with the 'rona, only 2 tested.

atoms's avatar

This too, for me and for most of the people I know/care about. I don't think any of my personal friends/family has the 'rona yet [fingers crossed]

AndyPanda's avatar

Me too. Especially given the number of people who don't have it currently.

imalasmax's avatar

- New job, which finally happened despite all the craziness going on in the world

- Support network that's been checking in on me in these days of isolation

rocksanddirt's avatar

congrats on the new job!

imalasmax's avatar

THANK YOU!

It's a weird time to start, but I've been hoping to make a move to an in-house position for years now. So glad it finally worked out.

atoms's avatar

Congrats, very glad to hear!

rocksanddirt's avatar

now you get to send your lawfirm on retainer random instructions at 5 on a friday and say you need it ready by 9 on Monday. instead of doing it.

imalasmax's avatar

I wonder how long it'll take me to become the a-hole who does that without feeling guilty. Over/under?

DC Trojan's avatar

They’ll be getting paid to do it 🤷🏼‍♂️

Scootie's avatar

I genuinely love being home alone. I could probably do this forever without ill psychological effects.

atoms's avatar

Having a stable employment situation and the ability to telecommute, now that there's a recession looming.

FiatSlug's avatar

This describes my current situation, although I'm not very enthusiastic about the telecommuting part.

atoms's avatar

I like not having to spend an hour and a half a day commuting.

FiatSlug's avatar

I wouldn't mind telecommuting except that my desk at home is ergonomically appropriate for me for more than an hour or so in a day; I can't easily get up and walk over to someone's desk for quick consultation.

I do have access to the business network which is tremendously important. I can create documents pretty much as needed and have resources to send emails to a wide group as needed (like last night on a critical staffing issue).

I still have to commute in on a daily basis in order to process various documents. I'm at my workstation from 6:30 to 11:30 am, sometimes up to 12:30 pm every workday. I have a one hour break to get home and eat lunch, then telecommute until 4:30 pm, sometimes a bit longer each day.

If I had entire days where I could work from home, that'd be great. It's just not practical at this time.

So, it's clearly a mixed bag.

FiatSlug's avatar

Damn. I meant to say "...ergonomically inappropriate..."

Cugel's avatar

You're not shacked up with a new girlfriend.

FiatSlug's avatar

I see you're making a distinction here. I am shacking up with my new girlfriend. She's been my new girlfriend since 1985. 😁😁😁

DC Trojan's avatar

I’m torn between being vexed about this being such a bad time to find another job and psyched to be getting a pay check

rocksanddirt's avatar

The people I work with. who are putting on the best effort during this madness. and surprisingly the most annoying are the non-essential few who are not coming in except maybe once a week or so.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

I think we all would like to make 30% of what Messi is making.

DC Trojan's avatar

The more important part is that the players are making sure that staff get paid

Erik Johannessen's avatar

I mean, that's great, but ideally it would be the billionaires taking a haircut, and not just the millionaires.

DC Trojan's avatar

Spanish soccer is such a financial madhouse that it’s possible that the players are more liquid

SGBear's avatar

Our crumbling democracy

AndyPanda's avatar

The state has declared liquor stores, lottery outlets, and recreational cabanas stores as essential services...because in the face of the greatest public health disaster and worst unemployment episode in the history of the state, they need the tax revenue from these places. Might be a bit of a planning and budgeting failure here.

DC Trojan's avatar

Also prevents alcoholics from having to dry out involuntarily during a public health crisis

dcblue's avatar

I've been kind of wondering about some of the panhandlers I know. Some, but not all, of them are drinkers There are so few people out these days they can't be making much. I'm curious as to how things are going but don't want to pry too much. A couple of the guys get small SSI checks so they will disappear for a day or two to a motel now that the first of the month is coming.

atoms's avatar

Also keeps the normal populace a bit more satisfied with the quality of life chilling at home.

DC Trojan's avatar

Since I generally don’t drink alone, it’s kind of a moot point

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

That's why you need to join a DBD social!

Scootie's avatar

Have you had any good news today?

I put on my jeans this morning and they fit the same as they did a month ago. Fingers crossed we can all avoid gaining the Covid 19, but it's hard when the fridge is better stocked than it has ever been in its life, and I have nothing but time to cook.

rocksanddirt's avatar

love "gaining the Covid 19"

Old Bear 71's avatar

Tulips. Came in right after crocuses and daffodils. Beauty in the wee things.

Berkelium97's avatar

The crocuses are coming up in my yard and daffodils should be up this week. I'm looking forward to the tulips. It's finally starting to look like spring.

Scootie's avatar

I just bought some beautiful bright orange ones at the grocery store.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I would love to see a picture, but this medium isn't conducive to sharing!

dcblue's avatar

There are a couple dozen tulip beds in the park across the street but they are renovating the nearby carillon the Netherlands gave the U.S. so the beds are just weeds this year with only a few tulips sticking through. I miss having the beds full.

Terence's avatar

Who is the worst person on Tiger King, and why?

Terence's avatar

I think I've landed on Jeff Lowe because it feels like he's decisively evil

Cugel's avatar

But then I'd have watch it, and it isn't my cup of tea.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Pizza A-Z

My friends in Ohio were talking about covering the alphabet of pizzas. There were a couple that might have been cheats--we had to pick a couple restaurants that have pizza on the menu, or Tombstone from the grocery store--but we were able to cover the alphabet. Should we try here?

Z is obviously Zachary's

atoms's avatar

A is clearly Arizmendi

DC Trojan's avatar

B is a local confederation of places called Besta Pizza, although our nearest location appears to have folded some time ago.

DC Trojan's avatar

Cheesy Pizzi has a terrible name and delivers delicious Turkish pide

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Sweatpants update:

I had an Amazon giftcard, so I ordered some pajama bottoms and a onesie from Forever Lazy through them, but I've been looking elsewhere for sweatpants with pockets (I don't really like using Amazon).

-Unsurprisingly, women's sweats tend not to have pockets

-Homage sweats run $50/pair. I trust their quality, but...I'm not buying $50 sweats

-Target sweats run $20/pair

-American Eagle/Aerie sweats run $30+/pair

-Joggers seem to be all the rage (but I want open hem)

-Hanes sweats! Inexpensive ($8)! Probably still good quality! Girls', boys', and men's sweats all have pockets; women's do not. The reviews on the girls' sweatpants are cracking me up.

Grandma123 says: Ordered size 14 for my granddaughter and they are too big.

Cugel's avatar

They're Sweatpants!!! The men's will fit you fine and have pockets - or the boys more like :)

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Men's won't fit me, and I've tried boys' pants in the past, but the hips tend not to have enough give. But don't worry, I'm getting the girls' sweatpants--looks like there's an extra discount and now they're $6.40!!!

Cugel's avatar

"The fashion stylist to some of Nigeria’s biggest stars was flying home from a fabric-buying spree in Istanbul when she noticed people staring at her — and not in a flattering way. Must be the surgical mask, she thought.

“They were looking at me like, ‘Oh, is something wrong with you?’ ” said Tiannah Toyin Lawani, 38, who shares her atelier videos with 860,000 followers on Instagram. “But imagine if the fabric had matched my ensemble. They would think, ‘That’s fashion.’ ”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/africa/coronavirus-nigeria-mask-bling-tiannah-toyin-lawani/2020/03/29/36666ed4-6f65-11ea-a156-0048b62cdb51_story.html

Then it clicked: Protective gear could use more glamour.

Now, seven tailors have moved into her mansion in the commercial capital, Lagos, as business in Africa’s largest economy crawls to a halt. They’re wearing custom hazmat suits and sewing glittery, rhinestone-studded face masks for sale and donation.

With a giant asterisk, of course: Even medical-grade coverage isn’t guaranteed to stop the novel coronavirus. But while the effectiveness of homemade masks is unproven, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they’re better than none in last-resort situations, which is why tailors around the world are stitching substitutes in the face of a global shortage. The American company that makes Major League Baseball uniforms, for instance, is cutting pinstriped masks from jersey material."

heyalumnigo's avatar

The Fanatics plant is the one making masks out of the pinstriped jerseys.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I just saw that Brooks Brothers is converting to mask production, too. I have mixed feelings about all this. On the one hand, it's heartening to see all the people trying to make their contributions. One of my friends is an illustrator, and she answered a WHO call to creatives to spread public health information. On the other hand, I am a firm believer in a strong, evidence-based, government-led effort. It worked in Taiwan. It is severely lacking here (understatement).

DC Trojan's avatar

better making masks than refusing to stop congregating - the mask makers aren’t making things worse

Erik Johannessen's avatar

So, what are the odds we start seeing "mask giveaway days" at sporting events in the Fall?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

*sigh*, yeah, I saw that, made me sad.

Cugel's avatar

"Slap a brown filter on it, make it look aged and falling apart, and replace all references of "Subway" and "sandwiches" with "Nuka-Cola" and it wouldn't feel too out of place in Fallout."

On point, damn.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Thanks. Interesting answers. Sounds like they basically say put everything away and wash your hands. Also there is an answer to the "wash everything you bring inside" video. They go into detail on multiple bullet points which is too long to include:

"I disagree with many of the principles that he builds his video upon as they are misguided. Many other food safety experts who are in the field and are microbiologists who understand food on a deep level also disagree with much in the video. It is very unfortunate that his video was shared so many times spreading misinformation."
