I mentioned on another DBD that there will likely be a baby boom this winter. Welp. didn't think that I'd be part of that equation. JoJoMini expected this winter.
Many years of habit sighting the bold looking CBG icon then clicking it open. The WF's light (meek) colored icon does not stand out as well but getting used to it.
Yeah, I've been waiting for an update from the designer for a few weeks as I think our logos are still a long way from where they need to be. I think a mostly-white icon can be good because it can stand out against all the other colorful icons, but the elements on the icon aren't bold enough for that to work yet.
it's owned by SBN -- they did a rebranding a number of years ago where they had the same designer go through and do logos in a similar style for all of their sites.
I thought ours was by Kod's sis too. All the logos got formatted into the same circular format, but they came from individual artists. That's why ours looks so different than other bear logos, like BN.
"SAN FRANCISCO — State leaders and doctors are cautiously optimistic that the Bay Area's early moves to lock down residents two weeks ago have prevented surges of coronavirus patients from overwhelming the region's health care capacity thus far.
Six Bay Area counties were first in the country to adopt aggressive tactics with an enforceable March 16 order requiring residents to stay at home. Gov. Gavin Newsom quickly followed with a statewide order three days later restricting the state's 40 million residents from all but essential activities.
After 14 days — the outermost period at which symptoms are believed to emerge post-infection — doctors at area hospitals are now reporting fewer cases than they expected to see at this point, and officials credit the lockdown with stemming the tide of patients they feared would flood into emergency rooms.
Northern California offered a rare glimpse of optimism Monday as the U.S. recorded its most coronavirus deaths in one day and Washington, D.C.-area jurisdictions — Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia — issued their first enforceable stay-at-home orders. Health officials across the nation are eyeing the Bay Area as a bellwether to determine the effects of social distancing, since the region's policies were replicated in various states and cities in subsequent days."
I got a notification on my phone that we're extended out to May 1. Though I could see it being June. I should've gotten a haircut before the shelter in place started.
My shelter in place orders are not quite as strict (since we're ahead on the curve) but I found this great barber shop in Bangkok that gives me a great haircut, and I dithered about on getting a haircut and by the time I decided to return to Shanghai I lost my opportunity to get one last haircut there :(
Did y'all get the CDC mailer? It literally says "President Trump's Coronavirus Guidelines for America" on the front. Remember when civil services was not partisan?
I did not get that, but if I had, I would have tossed it directly in the recycle bin. Attaching any politician's name to a mailer like that is an excellent way to get half the country to immediately ignore it.
On the other hand, if it happened to contain good information and just leveraged Trump's name to get his constituency to take the crisis seriously, Fox News be damned, then that would probably be a good thing, on balance. I have no evidence that that's the case, however.
I got that in the mail early last week and thought the title was pretty cringeworthy. It was just days after he was still calling it an overblown hoax.
Is anyone still at CGB? I haven't been checking back on it.
I would imagine all sports sites are suffering traffic right now. I certainly wouldn't want to be running an ad-revenue-driven sports website right now, that's for sure.
I visit True Blue LA every day and they still have posts and traffic, though traffic is lighter. They use their current FP post similar to our DBD. Just throw up anything to discuss.
Well, not only is traffic way down, but ad rates (especially around sports) are also way down. I think anything ad-driven isn't doing particularly well right now, but from what I've heard, ad inventory for sports and travel have fallen to nearly zero.
Going for walks, doing pushups/situps, playing stupid dance video games. Nothing particularly elaborate. Might take out the rowing machine today again for a bit.
In January I was rather seriously looking at buying one for next winter it's too cold to exercise outside. I had no idea that so many people have them.
Mostly I’ve been exercising my patience. I took yesterday off after walking at least 5k both days last weekend, but I’m going to need to figure out how to fit something in on work days when there is much to be done (customer isn’t backing off on “standard work hour availability”) or the weather is going to be crap after 5 pm
Exercising patience is definitely a thing, and at the rate this isn't being addressed effectively at any level, its going to take a lot of patience. Combine that with a new CIO that landed at work weeks before this started who knows only how to quote from ITIL, micromanage, and basically distrust every actual professional around, and you have a spring season that is devoid of very much joy.
Staying with my brother means I do actually do some exercise. Every morning, the first thing he says is "are you ready to go for a walk with the dogs?" and the second thing he says is "what time do you want to work out today?"
This evening will be whatever legs and back exercises he tells me to do.
I work out later in the day, so not done yet. I've been doing a mix of HIIT and strength workouts to cover everything. I've been exercising 5x a week. Nothing else to do.
i have been trying to ride every day. yesterday i had a hard interval workout, so today i will probably take it a little bit easier and ride for about an hour indoors on the Zwift setup.
i guess i could go outside, but it is cloudy and 45 deg out. so will opt for indoors.
for those who don't know what Zwift is, it is a virtual riding app. you can pick a route and ride on virtual roads. usually you need a setup w/ ipad or TV and a remote controllable trainer. that way when the road gets steep, it makes it harder to pedal as it would outside.
He's doing bluetooth stuff for them. I would think there would be all sorts of bluetooth sensors connecting to their hardware, like body sensors and bike sensors like cadence.
true. there is a ton of data work too. but i think the most compelling thing has to be VR style bike rides where you put on some glasses and it really feels like you are surrounded by the road, not just on a screen
I ran a couple miles yesterday, so had nothing scheduled for today. Although I am definitely missing the daily commute exercise I got with biking/walking, so I may have to find ways to do something every day.
I went for a short run on Fri. Will try to go today and ramp myself up. Boy my legs are in such bad shape. Struggled to run 2.5 miles. I also realized, after having run on pavement for the first time in 15+ years, that my knees are lold. They were very sore running downhill to start.
Damn 70 seconds is insane. But I also feel like my conditioning has dropped off a cliff despite only being a few weeks. I'm also terrified to think about how much my lifts will drop whenever I'm able to get back into a gym.
My workout place never did 70 seconds before, but I'm doing workout based on my wife's workout bootcamp (Burn). That's what it was, so that's what the whole family does. Teenage son is not happy about being awake before 9 am.
Trying to alternate between biking and lifting weights. Yesterday I went for a ride so today I'll lift some weights after I'm done with work for the day.
I'm hopeful that people who haven't actually read the shelter-in-place order do not realize that exercise is allowed, that way I have fewer people to dodge on the trails.
I think for anything under $1500 I would look at Giant, since they're the OEM for a ton of the other cycle brands lower end bikes and you get a lot of bike for your money.
thanks - that's very helpful. There seem to be a couple of places around here that have it in stock, although with differing messages about whether they're open or not. Mind you, it's waited this long, it can wait some more.
I figure there's no need for me to be like the dudes I see riding on local roads in pelotons with $5000 bikes and beer bellies. Start sensibly and see where things go from there.
I'm not familiar with the frame maker, but the components seem pretty reasonable for that price point. Unless Retrospec makes lousy frames, it seems decent.
I'm not completely ready to get a bike because it's frankly unsafe to ride one most places around here, and the idea of using my car to take my bike somewhere to ride it... that's not sitting right.
No idea, I don’t know anything about bikes these days and I had a slight preference to buy from a local dealer - but if BK97 thinks it’s at least plausible, that’s a help
I got in an about eight mile run around the streets and trails in Georgetown. I went by the university and it's a ghost town and a police car was parked near the main gate, presumably to keep people away. Will do some stretching/yoga later.
I was talking to an employee at a local liquor store and he said this March has been their best month in their business' 31 years of existence. Their drive-thru sales have been so successful that they're going to implement it full-time when life returns to normal.
I ordered a 12 pack of Lagunitas IPA for delivery on 7-11.com. Came in 25 minutes...another way to get some beer/spirits rather than covering up to go out to the grocery store.
Along the same lines, my favorite local Chinese restaurant is in a repurposed fast food building, so it had a drive through. The owners used it as a covered park for their old E-class Mercedes. They are doing a booming business now through that drive-through. So much business, that I've had to steer my business to my favorite Mexican place that has gone from can't-find-a-seat to almost nothing. Talked to the staff and they're really suffering. Everyone gets 30% tips now.
https://www.eastbayfeeder.org/ Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon started this--raise funds, buy food from local restaurants, donate to healthcare workers
I still accidentally start to type Califor... in the url field when trying to come to W4C (old habits die hard). But I don't visit CGB any longer and am not particularly interested in its content. I don't have any negative feelings towards the new site manager, and I certainly do not envy his task of trying to follow up a site as great as the original CGB.
I don't wish ill on Cam Mellor. Kid was hired to do an impossible job: write articles about Pac-12 sports when his audience knows far, far, far more than he does. It's just sad and cringey that SBN has chosen to use this business model. I won't be going there again.
his twitter feed is just so generic college football. i guess it's good he relocated to LA, but the Pac 12 football fans are very different than midwest (where he's from) and the south.
I haven't seen it because I'm irrationally annoyed by how quickly it caught on. One day I saw one picture of a weird-looking dude from the show and then the next day this was all anyone could talk about.
I wouldn't invest 7-ish hours to watch all 7 episodes. But if someone in your household is watching it, it's not a bad idea to spend some time within earshot of the show occasionally. My wife watched the show over the last week and while I wasn't actively watching, several times I did look up from my laptop after having a "hold up--what did they just say?" moment.
I gave in on Sunday afternoon and we ended up watching all seven episodes because it was so fascinating. It's also a heavy reminder of how different the different parts of our country actually are.
Jeff Lowe is by far the worst. Joe Exotic is up there though too (esp. scamming his mom out of her money). My wife has been doing a spot on Carole impression the past two days, so your FB post yesterday gave me a good chuckle.
The zoo staff were mostly pretty likable. The two head guys (the dude with prosthetic legs and the log haired guy) were my favorites.
Definitely Reese's Puffs. It's been a long time since I've bought cereal, so nothing was immediately coming to mind until I saw your mention of Reese's Puffs.
Trump tries (but fails) to flex on PBS' Yamiche Alcindor:
"I know South Korea better than anybody. It's a very tight — do you know how many people are in Seoul? Do you know how big the city of Seoul is? 38 million people. That's bigger than anything we have."
It's probably not worth wasting time to call him out on his error at the next briefing, but I would like to see him explain away why he wasn't wrong, which he would probably try to do.
Mypillow guy gets to address the nation at press conference. No word if the masks will help with fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, cerebral palsy, acid reflux, and other conditions.
Man, it is really hard to try to stop touching your face.
Drink in each hand, you'll be fine.
pqtm
I mainly just only try to touch my face when my hands are clean
Hey, I can scroll to the right to see deep reply threads! That’s nice.
Corona Baby Boom
Got a baby registry notice from some friends this morning.
I'm happy for them because they've been trying for a while, but irritated that I don't get to go to a party in exchange for buying them baby things.
I mentioned on another DBD that there will likely be a baby boom this winter. Welp. didn't think that I'd be part of that equation. JoJoMini expected this winter.
I just did the math. due date is Big Game weekend... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Did you release the coronavirus so football would be cancelled and you wouldn't have to miss the Big Game...?
Time for a planned C-section a week before the BG; priorities, man.
Congrats!
Congrats!
congrats!!!

The one vs USC where he had a pen or pencil - thought he was gonna impale someone John Wick style
Congrats!!
Oh Zhang!
Congrats, man!
I am definitely hoping not to be in that camp; thank goodness for birth control
@oh look at mr I'm having sex over here@
:) Well.. without getting into too much detail, this is a surprise baby :)
Heh, I feel you, man.
No 3 wasn't planned either.
I kinda assumed this based on your original post.
My exercise is concentrating on 3 square meals a day and taking 1,000 mgs of Vitamin C to bolster the immune system.
Many years of habit sighting the bold looking CBG icon then clicking it open. The WF's light (meek) colored icon does not stand out as well but getting used to it.

Is the Golden Bear on the CGB website owned by SBN? Didn't Kodiak's sister design it? I liked that logo/graphic.
it's owned by SBN -- they did a rebranding a number of years ago where they had the same designer go through and do logos in a similar style for all of their sites.
I thought ours was by Kod's sis too. All the logos got formatted into the same circular format, but they came from individual artists. That's why ours looks so different than other bear logos, like BN.
oh, maybe you're right. in any case, I'm pretty sure we've assigned that IP to SBN.
good to have a line on a quality graphic artist like that, though.
We NEED new graphics

Seems to be working...
I got a notification on my phone that we're extended out to May 1. Though I could see it being June. I should've gotten a haircut before the shelter in place started.
Seriously, that's one thing I didn't consider when all of this started, that we wouldn't be able to get haircuts for months.

I shake my remaining luscious locks at you.
(It's definitely getting thinner up there, but still got a full head of hair for now.)

Did y'all get the CDC mailer? It literally says "President Trump's Coronavirus Guidelines for America" on the front. Remember when civil services was not partisan?
BTW speaking of Trump using official federal government documents as marketing collateral for his own personal brand, Trump wants his signature to appear on the stimulus checks that are going to be sent out, because of fucking course he does: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/03/trump-wants-signature-coronavirus-stimulus-checks.html
we got that today and the missus was unimpressed
I did not get that, but if I had, I would have tossed it directly in the recycle bin. Attaching any politician's name to a mailer like that is an excellent way to get half the country to immediately ignore it.

I got 2 of them, tossed them directly into the recycle bin.
Yes, annoying AF
I got that in the mail early last week and thought the title was pretty cringeworthy. It was just days after he was still calling it an overblown hoax.
Haha Cheetoh in the White House quotes the elevation of Seoul in meters, not the population!!!
Also, it seems like a lot of folks have migrated to WFC...
Is anyone still at CGB? I haven't been checking back on it.
I would imagine all sports sites are suffering traffic right now. I certainly wouldn't want to be running an ad-revenue-driven sports website right now, that's for sure.
Interestingly, there's a handful of new people on the front page. All Cal fans from their handles.
Nope.
I visit True Blue LA every day and they still have posts and traffic, though traffic is lighter. They use their current FP post similar to our DBD. Just throw up anything to discuss.

DBD Exercise Accountability: What's your workout today and did you complete it?
Going for walks, doing pushups/situps, playing stupid dance video games. Nothing particularly elaborate. Might take out the rowing machine today again for a bit.
How many people just have rowing machines lying around? I'm so envious.
no surprise, I also have one. Need to replace the screen
I got a 1st-gen water rower off craigslist a few years ago. I made a very good deal.
We have one
In January I was rather seriously looking at buying one for next winter it's too cold to exercise outside. I had no idea that so many people have them.
If so, I can be in charge of the yelling
Two mile run with the little dog, two mile walk with the old big dog, both completed. Probably a yoga tonight with the Mrs.
Mostly I’ve been exercising my patience. That sounds dire
Lots of cool and cloudy days lately. Even when it hits the 60s the clouds make it feel cooler.
It was a very mild winter, but spring is certainly taking its sweet time bringing the temps up this year.
Staying with my brother means I do actually do some exercise. Every morning, the first thing he says is "are you ready to go for a walk with the dogs?" and the second thing he says is "what time do you want to work out today?"

One of the guys I worked with recently left to go work for them.
arent they based in Boulder or something?
I think corporate, or maybe development, is in Long Beach right on the water. That's where he flew for his interview.
maybe it was a different cycling place that is in Boulder. my evil scheme is to get us to move there, so that's why i was asking
Boulder seems pretty cool. Once the kids go to college that's perfect for you.
really. would love to talk to them. i have ALL SORT OF IDEAS
Exercise? What's that?
Biked to work. so halfway to my 8-ish miles a day of biking.
Haven't designed today's yet, so here's yesterday's. Not including warm-up.
Circuit with 40 sec on and 20 sec on; three sets.
* Tuck-ups
* Bar dips
* Bulgarian split squats
* Don't know what these are called, but they're seated and you bring your legs in and out. In hindsight, it was too repetitive with the tuck-ups.
* Inverted rows
* Pike push-ups
* Maasai squats
Today's workout. I need to be better with "less is more" when designing workouts, especially with my fitness precipitously dropping every day.
Tabata with 20 on, 10 off for six each.
* Mountain climbers
* Spider-Man push-ups
* Clapping V-ups
* Inverted rows (two days in a row because my bar is still in the position)
* Plank jacks (inspired by SGBear)
* Overhead press
* Goblet squats
I went for a short run on Fri. Will try to go today and ramp myself up. Boy my legs are in such bad shape. Struggled to run 2.5 miles. I also realized, after having run on pavement for the first time in 15+ years, that my knees are lold. They were very sore running downhill to start.
well, yesterday, yes: 40 minutes on the bike, and then 30 minutes of stretches and core exercises.
Pyramid workout (a, ab, abc...): 70 seconds each, 20 seconds rest
a. 8 high knees, 1 plank jack
b. plank with alternating touches (keeping hips steady)
c. plank w/ 2 alternating knees to elbows, 1 pushup
d. scissor pick-ups (jack legs out, touching ground between legs with chest showing forward), jack-legs in but scissor feet one in front of the other
e. pike jacks (just the part of the burpee where you pop your feet to your feet and back)
f. fast feet
Finisher: 30 burpees in 2 minutes
So much sweat. Failed to complete a bunch. But I completed it. I've lost a LOT of fitness.
Yeah, 70s at once is long for a pyramid set. I've usually broken that up into sets of 20-30-20 seconds each.
Do you have any suggestions for a decent gravel bike for a potential born again cyclist? A bit random but I figured I’d ask
Mountain bike?
I was thinking something more like this: https://retrospec.com/collections/all-bikes/products/amok-v3-8-speed-cyclocross-bike
I think for anything under $1500 I would look at Giant, since they're the OEM for a ton of the other cycle brands lower end bikes and you get a lot of bike for your money.
Something like this https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/roam-3-disc-2020
thanks - that's very helpful.
It's Amok Time
I'm not familiar with the frame maker, but the components seem pretty reasonable for that price point. Unless Retrospec makes lousy frames, it seems decent.
Do get a helmet if you buy one.
I'm not completely ready to get a bike because it's frankly unsafe to ride one most places around here, and the idea of using my car to take my bike somewhere to ride it... that's not sitting right.
Well... what's wrong with that one?
No idea, I don’t know anything about bikes these days and I had a slight preference to buy from a local dealer - but if BK97 thinks it’s at least plausible, that’s a help
I bought rollers for my bike. Was able to ride upright for about 10 pedal strokes today. Back at it tomorrow.
10 petal strokes, so 30 seconds?
Less. Riding rollers is a skill I don't have. It was quite scary - my rear wheel was sliding around back there.
I didn't know what rollers were. Looked it up and I'm afraid I would kill myself if I tried it.
I went for an actual bike ride today. Slow 25km with a friend. Will try getting on the rollers again tomorrow.
I got in an about eight mile run around the streets and trails in Georgetown. I went by the university and it's a ghost town and a police car was parked near the main gate, presumably to keep people away. Will do some stretching/yoga later.
Australia: major retailers limit alcohol purchases.

Agreed about the tips. I figure if I can afford it, I should be tipping ridiculous amounts. Left a 100% tip at the coffee shop yesterday.

Any connection to the problems at the moment with the 4-1 DBD post?

I don't have any negative feelings towards the new site manager, and I certainly do not envy his task of trying to follow up a site as great as the original CGB.
let's infiltrate the tree sitters!
I copied all the good DBDs I wrote yesterday, wanted to do one on the road trip to Provo '18
I didn't realize we were still in control of the front page. I was wondering why the banner was on the FP saying the CGB team is on a new site.
he's actually had editorial control for a while, but he doesn't realize that he can unpin Nick's post telling people to come here.
He seems to know how to use the layout editor. I would guess he's leaving it up as a courtesy. I expect it to be gone tomorrow.
ahh...ok. I wonder how long it will stay up.
I don't wish ill on Cam Mellor. Kid was hired to do an impossible job: write articles about Pac-12 sports when his audience knows far, far, far more than he does. It's just sad and cringey that SBN has chosen to use this business model. I won't be going there again.

I haven't seen it because I'm irrationally annoyed by how quickly it caught on. One day I saw one picture of a weird-looking dude from the show and then the next day this was all anyone could talk about.
It's full of awful people, and a lot of poor treatment of animals. I wouldn't blame anyone for skipping it.
But it so fascinating.
I’ve seen so many tweets about it and the cumulative effect has been to confirm my lack of interest is spending my time on it

You don't know any gay redneck guys who lure straight husbands (plural) with meth?
Halfway through episode two you were planning on buying a tiger.
It def sucks you in. If it weren't for stay at home I probably would have skipped it, but I'm glad I've seen it now.
Who is the worst person? I've finally landed on Jeff Lowe. But all of the zoo owners (Joe Exotic, Doc Antle, Carole Baskin) were all awful people.
The only people I was ok with were all of the zoo staff - Saff, John Reinke, and Erik Cowie.
The trans-man who got his arm bit off is my favorite. He's so level headed.
What would be your favorite breakfast cereal (assuming calories are not an issue)?
Honey Nut or Multi-Grain Cheerios; Frosted Flakes; Sugar Smacks
Crispix, though they take up so much space that you have to be careful with the amount of milk you add.
Frosty flakes, with some fruit added. Works for lunch too.
1/2 cup blueberries, 1/2 chunked apple, 1/2 cup Grape Nuts, 1 scoop collagen, 3 tbs. hemp hearts, three chopped prunes, 1 scoop isolate protein, hemp or almond milk - stir it up.
Golden Crisps/Honey Smacks without milk
Or Reese's Puffs with milk
Definitely Reese's Puffs. It's been a long time since I've bought cereal, so nothing was immediately coming to mind until I saw your mention of Reese's Puffs.
Ah yeah, Reese's Puffs are great. So are peanut butter Puffins.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch is tops for me
It's been sooooo long since I've eaten any, I really have no clue.
The Cap'n. Or maybe Apple Jacks. But I also love Wheat Chex, so I'm going to have to say, depends on the mood.
Cap'n Crunch tastes pretty good but it tears up the roof of your mouth unless you soak them till they're soggy.
ummmmm, apple jacks
Cap'n Crunch: Peanut Butter > Crunch Berries > Regular
Crunch Berries, then plain, then everything else can go to hell.
Assuming I don't care about the processed sugary crap factor, probably one of Honeycombs, Golden Grahams, or Corn Pops.
Would be? Let's check the pantry.
I think it's currently a tie between Cinnamon Life and Honey Nut Cheerios. Frosted Flakes are also pretty high up there.
Life cereal is up there on my top 5 as well. But regular, not cinnamon.
frosted flakes or cocoa pebbles
Oh's
Oh's are a solid second for me behind CTC
and they're hard to find. Only have found them at Target around the East Bay. Safeway doesn't have them.
Weird, when we were buying cereal we could only find Oh's at Vons or Pavilions (Safeway's brand in SoCal)
maybe I should go check again.

Our crumbling democracy
Trump tries (but fails) to flex on PBS' Yamiche Alcindor:
"I know South Korea better than anybody. It's a very tight — do you know how many people are in Seoul? Do you know how big the city of Seoul is? 38 million people. That's bigger than anything we have."

It's probably not worth wasting time to call him out on his error at the next briefing, but I would like to see him explain away why he wasn't wrong, which he would probably try to do.
