In what ways do your housemates load the dishwasher incorrectly?

I was the only one in my family (maybe the only one in the world?) who actually read the dishwasher instruction manual.

Expand full comment

I don't even know where to begin. It is all wrong and when they do it, there are always dishes that are not clean after the wash.

Wife instructed me to keep bowls and other concave items on the top rack, and flat items on the bottom rack. I advised her to not put any wooden items or sharp knives in the dishwasher.

We are trying to work at some balance as to how much pre-washing/rinsing is necessary - she thinks none, I think a lot.

I don't recall any crying, but if he was crying about not getting the ball enough, I would have got on my knees and cried with him. Our offense fell off the cliff without him. I wish he hadn't left, but leaving for your hometown school after the coach who recruited you (and runs basically the opposite scheme as the new coach) seems pretty forgivable IMO. Despite Stanfurd being a perennial WBB powerhouse, they have not won a title since 1992...something about just how dominant UConn has been.

Obviously, only time will tell what is Arizona's future after this fast turnaround of the program. Cal had that one Final Four run and basically fell off, despite having the largest operating budget after football and men's basketball (which is not necessarily a bad thing despite WBB being the consistently costliest non-revenue Cal sports), but just have not seen any results on the floor...yet.

ICYMI: Texas' national champion men's diving team coach retires

Expand full comment
author

Reese has as much control over the Texas diving as Dave Durden has at Cal. Christopher Zheng, our other swim writer, has assured me that since Durden turned down the Auburn job a few years ago, he's not going to go to Texas.

It is hard to imagine that all those top swimming recruits went to Texas only because of Reese, who will be coach emeritus...whatever that means. But it would be interesting to see if Texas might slip a bit in recruiting.

In an unfair comparison, USC Water Polo (both men and women) is still quite good despite losing head coach Johan Vavic to the whole Operation Varsity Blue scandal.

Expand full comment

The Swim Center on the Texas campus is AMAZING and the program is very well funded. I doubt there will be a drop off

Expand full comment
author

That's true, but it is also very hard to stay at the pinnacle. I have no doubt that Texas will be a top-5 (if not 3) program for the next decade, I just won't mind if/when they start to finish just behind Cal for a change, even after adding those diving points. A slight drop in recruiting can do that.

Someone stole the mascot for the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Double-A affiliate of the Reds. The mascot is an anthropomorphic abstraction of Lookout Mountain. They played their first home game in 1930 against the Atlanta Crackers (1901-1965). The Crackers moved to Wisconsin in 1966 and became the Milwaukee Brewers. In 1931, the Lookouts played an exhibition game against the NY Yankees. The Lookout's seventeen-year-old pitcher Jackie Mitchell Gilbert, only the second female to play pro baseball, struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gerhig on only seven pitches.

He has also been pressed to play some LF now that the White Sox has lost Eloy Jimenez to most if not all of this season. That's really not a lot of time to adjust, so I really hope that he doesn't get hurt and this doesn't take the focus away from him hitting.

Also, since modern baseball awards have finally put more emphasis on WAR, Vaughn's AL ROY chance might not have been that great had him just been a DH. Assuming that he doesn't present negative value in the field (which is actually very plausible), playing LF *might* help Andrew Vaughn's ROY chance.
