Best show that involves realty? I gotta go with Santa Clarita Diet. Modern Family gets honorable mention, but gets dinged for the later seasons and because realty isn't as much of a focus.
TIL: The flag for India and the city of Miami look very similar. The former was designed in 1947. The latter in 1933 and is the reason why the Miami Hurricanes' team colors are what they are.
I bought postcards and stamps in Costa Rica, wrote all of them, and asked the hotel to mail them for me, but they said, "Oh, you can mail them at the airport." When pressed for more details, they admitted that they didn't actually know whether you could mail anything from the airport, so they agreed to take the postcards.
I bought, wrote, addressed, and stamped a bunch of postcards in Amsterdam- realized as we were getting on the train to Paris that I’d forgotten to send them so much to my wife’s horror got off the train to drop them in a mailbox in the station. I couldn’t tell if she was actually all that pleased that I got on the train again before it left.
I saw pictures of the Grand Canyon and oddly those don’t really give you the same sense of awe as seeing it in person. Guessing that Lake Tahoe is the same.
That seems reasonable - but there’s also the element with the lake that you’ve got to get out on it to get a sense of the surroundings, which pictures don’t tell you either
Back when BBC America was new and showed actual British programming my wife and I used to enjoy watching Changing Rooms and seeing Brits losing their shit when they found their rooms weren’t magnolia any longer

Meeting? None really. We met while working on a theater show.
But we were hanging out in the same friend group for about a year before officially becoming a couple, so there were plenty of nights out at bars and clubs during that time.
Newsom is accelerating opening in some counties, MLB season may start in July with no fans in the stands. NFL may do the same. Perhaps good news for our incipient season?
I think the NCAA and some conferences want games to go forward without fans. Some, I think, have said if the campus isn't safe for students then it shouldn't be safe for players. I think many schools will be virtual in the fall. CSU already has said most classes will be online I think.
I'm firmly convinced that this is the season the Bears win the P12 and are sent to Dallas instead of Pasadena....basically, it's a virtual certainty...
I have shared my guess before that different conferences end up doing their own thing at different times this upcoming school year. I think Cal may very well win the Pac-12* this year without getting the Rose Bowl (I know, it's part of the playoffs this year anyhow) or a major bowl as a reward.
*I can see how some schools within the Pac, like USC, may choose to do other things football-wise while other schools like a Stanford may hold out their team.
Notre Dame is going to try opening early, eliminating mid semester break, and ending fall semester by thanksgiving. I’ll be curious to see how many other campuses follow suit.
No, its to try to avoid the height of infectious respiratory illness season. Some non-football & lower division schools are investigating this as well. The current working estimate I've seen come out of a collaboration of several of the Pac-12 schools is the cost of not having at least a partially on campus fall term is ~$300 million per university. That includes, but also dwarfs, lost football revenue.
No 1 said he heard the Ivies may go the opposite. That they may cancel the fall and have the Fall in the Spring and Spring in the summer. I wonder if it's because they have so many international students. I wonder if Notre Dame has mostly US students.
I don't see how opening early helps. Wouldn't it be better to open late? Unless the point is to not have to have students travel for thanksgiving and then again for Christmas.
The speculation was that Notre Dame thinks that regular cold and flu season is going to be a complete shitshow, and they want students to be on campus for one period of time and then go, rather than potentially being disease spreaders for mid term break and thanksgiving.
I’m not sure that I buy it, but you can at least see some logic.
my chopstick skills are a mess (i obviously can use them, but I learned everything myself) and I am not a neat scissor user - i use both hands actually.
When I write notes and other things my writing has devolved into a hybrid of mostly printing with some cursive mixed in. It's not good. Maybe a seven or so.
I'm too biased--I need someone to grade mine for me.
I recently had a coworker tell me he hates my normal, cursive writing; however, he loves my writing on tubes and lab stuff because I try extra hard to make it legible, which is usually tough because the surfaces are curved, small, etc.
I can’t compete with that - but little did I know when I had a temp job in the shipping department at LifeFitness that mastering writing in clear block capitals in a hurry would be a genuine work skill later in life for consulting
Although virtual white boards are making that less relevant 🤷🏼♂️
i took all the drafting courses that were offered at my HS. 2 or 3 of them.
i think my handwriting was pretty good back then too. but the thing i liked the most was the old school feel of the pencil in your hand and gentle twist you would have to give to get a line to look the best as you dragged it across the paper.
i ended up using a lot of AutoCAD in grad school to design stuff, but i still always like drawing things out on paper.
it turned out to be a great skill to have as an experimental physics grad student. we were all always building stuff, making quick drawings and either making it ourselves in the student shop or handing off to the machine room for the more complex stuff.
Mine is fine if I’m paying attention but varies widely depending on speed needed and whatever. I am experimenting with taking notes on what is basically like a whiteboard in 8 1/2 x 11 format using wet erase markers which is forcing a certain economy of words and increase in writing size
I have largely given up on hating popular songs, but I do still have an instinctive aversion to Bachman Turner Overdrive's "Taking Care of Business" because I once worked in an Office Depot where they played that song constantly.
The only other Eagles song that I could say I know is Hotel California, which is less aggressively stupid. I really just don’t care for most American classic rock - which means that I’ve avoided getting familiar enough to genuinely hate any specific song
Why? (I really just don’t care for most American classic rock) It's a pretty big catalog - lots of different bands, trends, approaches, sounds.
I guess if you just define it as AM standards from mid 60's- 80's I suppose I could see that, but what about all the garage bands of the late 60's? What about MC5 & the Stooges? You no like CC&R? Big Star? Punk & New Wave from the 70's?

South Lake Tahoe
Went there once as a teenager. I still have too many postcards bought on that trip that I haven't sent yet.
Don't remind me. I worked for many years spending four or five months overseas and have bunches of unsent postcards.
None of my friends ever received my postcards.
I should probably go to Lake Tahoe sometime and see what all the hubbub is about
It's too bad we can't see images otherwise you can see how beautiful it is.
not as beautiful as you !
"How is the location? As beautiful as I am, right? Just kidding. It is as beautiful as you are."

What a beautiful story for YWC!
It's definitely good that images don't show up then!
I saw pictures of the Grand Canyon and oddly those don’t really give you the same sense of awe as seeing it in person. Guessing that Lake Tahoe is the same.
I mean Tahoe probably isn’t quite as bonkers but still
It's quite impressive, but it's not the Grand Canyon.
That seems reasonable - but there’s also the element with the lake that you’ve got to get out on it to get a sense of the surroundings, which pictures don’t tell you either
Grand Canyon is the best "yup, there it is" in the entire world.
Not a fan of south lake area. If I want casino's/etc. i'd rather go to reno or vegas (so not at all).
West shore is the best shore.
prefer north, but it is hard to complain about any part of Tahoe really
we skied at Heavenly w/ family a bunch of years ago.
Haven't been there since my bachelor party 26 years ago. Did stop by North Lake Tahoe for a picture when I drove back in 2015.
Since I don't care about gambling, the north shore is where it's at IMO.
Best show that involves realty
Back when BBC America was new and showed actual British programming my wife and I used to enjoy watching Changing Rooms and seeing Brits losing their shit when they found their rooms weren’t magnolia any longer
Magnolia?
Off white
I would have guessed flowery wallpaper or something.
I would have never guessed that.
I like any of the shows where they just do tours: Grand Designs, Weekend Aristocrats, Amazing Interiors, World's Most Extraordinary Homes, Secrets of Great British Castles...
Not that I watch it, but the girls like "Love It or List It"
I agree with The Santa Clarita Diet. Very solid show.
Just finished season 2 of Dead to Me on the 'Flix...Christina Applegate & Linda Cardellini are great. Dark, but good.
I'm way behind on that one. I watched the first couple eps, but then stopped.
Just watched the first episode last night, looks good.
Chernobyl?
Oh wait, realty, not reality.
I can get you a good deal on some Ukraine real estate.
That was so good.
My favorite realty show is House Hunters International. I like seeing housing in other countries.

Spouse #1 I really must have something with the local cultural architecture. Spouse#2 I prefer modern. Both, separately: I always get my way.
nailed it
Married people of the DBD: how much did alcohol play in meeting your spouse?
I think there was an alcohol involved in keeping my spouse around...
Wait, is that the trick? Have I been avoiding alcohol all this time for nothing?
a small bit.
Zip actually
I dunno, don't really remember much about that night.
Meeting? None really. We met while working on a theater show.
But we were hanging out in the same friend group for about a year before officially becoming a couple, so there were plenty of nights out at bars and clubs during that time.
none. my wife barely drinks. i am pretty sure she has never been drunk.
This sounds familiar
As an ex-married person, alcohol played no role in meeting my ex.
Neither mine. I was renting the back apt on the 1st floor and she moved in the next year to the 2nd floor.
Little bit - we met after a grad student social hour, I was relatively sober and she was completely sober, so....
I met my future spouse at a party at Bowles Hall freshman year, just a bit

I think the certainty is that we would have won but that means the season will be canceled.
I have shared my guess before that different conferences end up doing their own thing at different times this upcoming school year. I think Cal may very well win the Pac-12* this year without getting the Rose Bowl (I know, it's part of the playoffs this year anyhow) or a major bowl as a reward.

Notre Dame is going to try opening early, eliminating mid semester break, and ending fall semester by thanksgiving. I’ll be curious to see how many other campuses follow suit.
Other than the financial aspect of football, this plan makes zero sense to me.
I’m surprised they went that way - guessing it’s precisely for football.
I guess if they think they can sort out their logistics and contingencies before August, it’s worth a shot 🤷🏼♂️
No 1 said he heard the Ivies may go the opposite. That they may cancel the fall and have the Fall in the Spring and Spring in the summer. I wonder if it's because they have so many international students. I wonder if Notre Dame has mostly US students.

Some Yale professor tweeted that this helps them "miss the second spike," and I thought...no, this helps them CREATE the second spike.
I’m not betting on anything more specific than “bad things are going to happen.”
hmm...didn't think about it from that angle. Kinda makes sense. Though starting earlier doesn't seem to make as much sense.
Rate your handwriting on a 19 point scale
10. I'm lefty and had to teach myself to write
I'm lefty too and I think that's definitely a factor.
my chopstick skills are a mess (i obviously can use them, but I learned everything myself) and I am not a neat scissor user - i use both hands actually.
17/19
It can be better or worse, depending on the pen.
Sample: https://tinyurl.com/yc854nqz
Normally? Probably an 11, but I did do a LOT of calligraphy when I was younger, I can do 19/19 when I need it.
Learning calligraphy is one of my quarantine to do's
I did it in one of my summer schools - maybe 6th grade? I can do it with a calligraphy pen, but I need practice again.
you mean with a pointy rock in a cave?
sigh
When I write notes and other things my writing has devolved into a hybrid of mostly printing with some cursive mixed in. It's not good. Maybe a seven or so.
I have to take a break signing things, or my signature gets wonky.
Must be tough signing all those deposit slips 😉
Silly rabbit, you don't sign those; I'm doing a distribution with 17 partners.
Kinky!
I'm too biased--I need someone to grade mine for me.
I recently had a coworker tell me he hates my normal, cursive writing; however, he loves my writing on tubes and lab stuff because I try extra hard to make it legible, which is usually tough because the surfaces are curved, small, etc.
19/19. Could have been an architect.
Once again, Scootie scores out at 19.

Campo had drafting?? TIL
The first 2 weeks of wood shop at my high school was drafting - and you needed to learn how to do it because every project needed to be drafted.
I was really good at drafting, but also almost snaded off a fingertip. I ended up being ok at woodshop in the end, but not really much of a craftsman.
y, Mr Mendoza, the electronics teacher, taught it.
Berryhill and Bricca and I were all in it. Berryhill actually became an architect.
Oh. didn't know that. Electronics was a fun class.
or TILWIF (TIL What I Forgot)
16/19. I write by hand quite a bit using a fountain pen. Yes i'm a luddite.
Ditto! But I'm too lazy for the bottle: cartridges for convenience.
Pfft, a real luddite would use a quill pen 😛
you use the refillable cartridges? or suck the ink from a big bottle of ink?
bottle of ink. the cartridges just make waste, and don't last very long.
6. My handwriting is barely legible even to me. If I concentrate really hard and slow down, it's still a 6.
15, generally very legible but casual enough that I don't seem like a huge nerd.
Used to be 18 or so through the early part of high school due to my mother. Then I stop to care about it and it quickly freefell to its current 6.
Mine is highly variable based on context.
Trying to print legibly (e.g., a note to someone else): 16
Writing hastily for only myself to see: 5
Cursive for others to see: 14, with great effort
Fast, sloppy cursive: 7
Well below average if I don't write slowly. Probably a 6?
6...been called "serial killer scrawl" at times....
used to be 14 or so. i used to write a lot of letters and always wrote in cursive because it was faster and looked better overall too.
down to about 7 these days mostly because i dont make an effort
Mine is fine if I’m paying attention but varies widely depending on speed needed and whatever. I am experimenting with taking notes on what is basically like a whiteboard in 8 1/2 x 11 format using wet erase markers which is forcing a certain economy of words and increase in writing size
What is your "I #$*#%*@ hate that song" song?
What a Wonderful World. Don't know why, but I can't stand it.
I'm Walking on Sunshine by Katrina an the Waves. Fuhuckkkkkkk you
My wife HATES that song
Doobie Brothers "What a Fool Believes" followed closely by any other Doobies song. Michael McDonald's voice is nails on a chalkboard to me.
I have largely given up on hating popular songs, but I do still have an instinctive aversion to Bachman Turner Overdrive's "Taking Care of Business" because I once worked in an Office Depot where they played that song constantly.
Mambo Number Motherfucking Five by Lou Bega. Fuck that trash song so hard.
That is always the correct answer for this category.
From that era, did you guys see this interview with Sisqo: https://www.defjam.com/news/thong-song-oral-history

At least he gave the oral history--DJ Khaled never would.

What happened?
Now that’s going to be stuck in my head for a while

I will occasionally take a hate listen to “life in the fast lane” by the Eagles.
Similar opinion regarding other Eagles songs? Or just that one?
The only other Eagles song that I could say I know is Hotel California, which is less aggressively stupid. I really just don’t care for most American classic rock - which means that I’ve avoided getting familiar enough to genuinely hate any specific song
Why? (I really just don’t care for most American classic rock) It's a pretty big catalog - lots of different bands, trends, approaches, sounds.

I always assumed that American classic rock applied to pretty much anything you’d hear on FM radio for old people. Of the examples you gave:
MC5 - it’s fine.
Stooges: perfectly fine music, most mixes are unlistenable though
CCR - Fortunate Son is okay
Big Star: I downloaded #1 album when Alex Chilton died. One of the most boring albums I’ve listened to in the last 10 years.
Punk and new wave: I mean it’s fine, but a lot of American punk was middle class posturing. Which is fine, that’s one of my main hobbies.
Eagles suck.
"Love Shack" by B-52's...quit going to weddings bc of it.
"All Right Now" by Free
I liked it before. They ruined it for me. :-(
Are we talking about the Stanfurd band?
Or even the Troj band?
I was briefly worried and then I remembered that there are only two songs that they know
3. Your forgetting about Tusk.
they're boring and they're slow
I wonder why...
