Also, I'm a dope, I though I had watched all of Clone Wars at the end of season 6 (Yoda learns how to live after death) - watched the 1st two eps of season 7 last night.

it's weird to think the concept of a force ghost appears to be non-existent up to that point and Qui Gon reaching out is what sends yoda on his vision quest

I know, not a very satisfying episode.

Like almost all other Disney plus series, I thought the final episode of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changer (out today) was both unbelievable and predictable. I did like the bulk of the series which was a cross of Cobra Kai and Ted Lasso but this final episode felt like a concussed daydream of the main character (maybe I need to check for a post-credit scene to make sure that wasn't the case).

Had the Friends reunion on while working. It was pretty good. it wasn't a show I religiously watched while it was on. Started the year No 1 was born and ended the year we moved to Ky.

I was in Asia for almost the entirety of the Friends' 10 season run. While I've seen some episodes and can appreciate that it was pretty good compared to its contemporary peers, I have no nostalgia for it or any desire to watch the original show or its reunion.

It was super popular in China for a while - there are still physical Central Perk locations. Lots of people used it to brush up on their English.

For all the complaints about HIMYM didn't age well, Friends feels even worse by the current standard about relationships, friendships, etc. Yet Friends t-shirt (in addition to NASA) was everywhere when I was traveling around both the US and Europe 2-3 years ago, worn by barely 20-year-olds.

Expand full comment

That's because you're expecting people to buy clothing to fit their fandom - I can tell you it doesn't always align. Plenty of tees being worn by people who have never watched that show or listened to that band.

The show aged well for me personally, but that's purely because I was a kid when it first came out, so those early seasons hit different when you rewatch them as an adult with some dating experience under your belt. (The later seasons were always trash after the show jumped the shark.)

But the show had diversity issues and probably had jokes about some subjects that aged poorly, if that's what you mean.

I watched a grand total of two episodes of Friends, the reunion would be wasted on me.

Wedges

another word for a warm sandwich in these parts.

i had never heard of that until we lived in Westchester after we moved to NYC

a good meatball or chicken parm wedge is one of the better things to eat.

https://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/westchester/2019/10/10/westchester-county-wedge-sandwich/2404722001/

Joe Scalone grew up in a Yonkers neighborhood where they didn’t call a sandwich on a long roll a hero, hoagie or a sub.

In Westchester County, it’s a wedge.

Taken from the race scene and popularized by French boat designers, the wedge shape is the most popular design for production sailboats nowadays. Many look like a wedge of brie, but they maximize the waterline allowing for faster speeds on smaller boats.

not a wedge salad, but last night at Bellanico we had a grilled halved treviso salad with butter beans, eggs and bacon. It was really good.

Bellanico has been a solid choice for years, good wine list too.

we had mixed feelings last night, the salad was amazing, the ribeye...? It was a very heavy dish. A giant slab of compound butter and too much of everything else. While the potatoes were good, that dish did not need them. It would have been perfectly fine with just the ribeye, broccoli and hen of the woods. And we got the collection of cicchetti, most of which were underwhelming. But we'd still go back. The wine was great (Bianchino) and just what the night called for.

Apropos. My wife got a gift pack last week from one of her business partners that was full of cheese & salami-type meats. There have been multiple consecutive days of eating an actual wedge of cheese.

Game #52: Chris Bassitt throws 2-hit shutout against Angels

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2021/5/27/22458015/oakland-as-game-52-los-angeles-angels-score-result

It sure looks like the Oakland A’s have finally found an ace for their rotation.

Starter Chris Bassitt pitched the best game of his increasingly impressive career on Thursday, finishing with a two-hit shutout over the Los Angeles Angels in a 5-0 victory at the Coliseum.

Last summer, Bassitt enjoyed a breakout year that saw him earn some downballot Cy Young votes. He was already backing up that performance with a strong start to 2021, and he entered the day having allowed just two runs apiece in seven of his last eight appearances, including a gem against the Angels last weekend in which he worked into the 8th inning. He cranked it up a notch in the rematch tonight.

Thanks to Bay Bridge traffic, No 1 and I decided to get tickets tonight to go watch Ohtani pitch.

For some reason he didn't pitch last night. Looking forward to seeing him duel Sean Manaea, who admittedly has been inconsistent this season.

The reason was apparently the Angels had to take BART to get to the ballpark after a Bay Bridge traffic accident. I am somewhat bummed to not see a viral video of someone running into the Angels team on BART.

with that accident Ohtani got into the stadium late and did not have enough time to prep as starting pitcher.

Giants get out-dingered in another loss to the Dodgers

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2021/5/27/22457974/san-francisco-giants-dodgers-recap-home-runs

We knew a week ago, when the San Francisco Giants embarked on a stretch of playing the Los Angeles Dodgers seven times in nine games, that we’d learn something about how the Giants would stack up against the top teams in the division/league (same thing, it would seem).

There aren’t a lot of data points yet, but booking a seven-game series loss when you still have three games left is not ideal.

The Giants did look much more competent on Thursday than they did over the weekend. It didn’t look like a baseball game where one team was substantially better than the other. It just looked like a baseball game between fairly even teams, with one team better at finding ways to win games. That kind of checks out. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I posit that, even after their hot start, the Giants are not quite as good and finding ways to win baseball games as the Dodgers are.

Dodgers hit three home runs as they pick up win over Giants

https://www.truebluela.com/2021/5/27/22457876/los-angeles-dodgers-mlb-new-recap-max-muncy-giants

One of the most historic rivalries was back in action on Thursday night, and it delivered all the fireworks. The Dodgers and Giants went back-and-forth, with LA coming out on top. They picked up the 4-3 victory, their fourth win in four games against San Francisco this season.

Having not relied on the home run as much as previous seasons, the Dodgers only got their runs courtesy of the long ball tonight. The first came in the third inning. After back-to-back outs to begin the inning, Mookie Betts hit a triple to extend the inning and put the go-ahead run 90 feet away. Justin Turner stepped up and put the Dodgers on top with a two-run shot. It was his second in three games and ninth of the season.
