Flamingos and roseate spoonbills – two pink, long-legged wading birds with similar-looking heads, wing shapes and plumage – are not related. Flamingos belong to the Metaves, while spoonbills belong to the Coronaves.
Legend holds that a scholar fell or jumped off a boat. His village rushed out to rescue him, and their frantic search led to the modern-day dragon boat races. His mother was worried that the creatures in the river would eat him, so she stuffed rice in bamboo to toss into the river, hoping that they would eat that instead. That’s why we have zongzi now.
Some how I missed out on dragonboat races while I was growing up. Seemed to me that it got popular in the 80s, when I felt like I was too busy to take part. I do love those zongzi though.
My mom knew a lady that made zongzi in her garage in Fremont. I think my mom got them for like 2.50 or 3 each. They were really really good with lots of filling. Then she got older and sold the recipe to some market in SJ so she stopped getting them. It's a shame because her zongzi and dumplings were so good.
Yeah, my parents normally order them from Taiwanese aunties in the area, but because they had to rush to Taiwan last week, I just picked some up at Ranch 99 today.
My FIL tried to get me to eat three of those last night and then a big giant bowl of noodles. Every day he eats like he's carbo loading for a marathon he will never run.
I have a lot of philosophical disagreements with him about lifestyle, etc. I imagine once there are kids/grandkids, there will be some disputes aired out in the open. To be honest, if it wasn't for the wife, I wouldn't care too much for him.
Bay Area Internet and TV question. What do you all use? The place we're moving to in Fremont has AT&T fiber, but I detest the AT&T TV packages. Should I suck it up and get an Xfinity/Comcast combo. Or do any of you know the right streaming package to get P12 and local stations? Thanks in advance.
I have the Comcast Triple Play, and I have to be honest, I like it a lot. The internet is super fast, the TV has everything I want and it makes it super easy to access apps from within the Comcast envelope. I pay around $150/month.
I got basically the all inclusive iwth phone for 190/mo. Paid $15/mo for their cable modem/router. Just bought a new cable modem and a wireless router and waiting for OOMA to port the phone number so I can change to a cable/internet plan and save money.
Have really had no real problems with XFinity and I can share my username with my kids to use.
Possibly so. We've had a spate of resignations in the last year in one particular job classification.
I'm of the opinion that the pandemic has changed how people view the labor market, particularly among those looking for work.
One area of the economy that has gotten some ink recently is in the restaurant industry. Many servers and others are not going back to working in restaurants because they feel they can do better. I'd be fine with it particularly if it means that tipping ends and the tipped minimum wage also ends. I consider both tipping and the tipped minimum wage to be an abomination upon workers and patrons alike.
I currently have 10 fully remote engineering jobs. The bar is so low, oversight is non-existent, and everyone is so forgiving for under performance I can coast about 4-8 weeks before a given job fires me. Currently on a $1.5M run-rate for comp this year. And the interviewing process is so much faster today, companies are desperate, it takes me 2-3hrs of total effort to land a new job with thousands to chose from.
what could possibly go wrong? (I had a developer take a second remote job but since I couldn't prove it and we had an end date on the contract, the eventual decision was just to roast him for missed deadlines and wait it out.)
My wife and I are legally changing SGB Jr's name today. They are non-binary, so the new name allows them to reborn in their new gender identity. Like many issues like this, I didn't care or really think about it... until it affected me. I knew since they were little that they weren't CIS gendered. I could understand gay, but non-binary was more nuanced. I've been through counseling and read up on the topic, but I've decided it's actually really not that hard. It's super easy when the answer is love and there's not much more to understand than that. My child knows that I'm a bit cynical, so they were unsure about the bother of the name change. I assured them that they could change their name to "Leland Stanford" and I would be 1,000,000% supportive. So Happy New Birthday to my child, who is no longer SGB Jr, and is now SGB 2.0.
Related academia discussion: institutions and publishers are discussing how to apply name changes to people's previous publications. That is, if I first publish as The Buckeye Bear, but then I change my name to The Better Buckeye Bear, and want to make sure all my papers from before are connected to my papers now, this should be feasible in the future!
That's been an ongoing challenge for colleagues of mine who have changed their names after getting married. Most continue using their maiden names for publications to preserve that continuity, even though they use their new surname for everything else.
It's non-gender specific name. It's a diminutive form for both male and female forms of a name in Russian. And because it's not a western name, it doesn't come with a lot of expectations with it. Then again, they have a lifetime of "come again? Spell that please."
our youngest daughter told us on Xmas day this last year that she was bi-sexual. not a gender thing, but a sexuality thing. it was meant to be our Xmas present so at least we know she feels comfortable talking to us about it.
it took me a while to disconnect the gender identity vs sexual orientation mostly from not having had to think about it harder in the past. i have learned from my kids that there are a lot of combinations and lots of overlap.
in fact, if you look my daughter occasional instagram posts, it says that she is "omni" which is a bit broader than "bi".
Don't lie. There is no way you would've been ok with a Leland Stanford in the family. Also, big thumbs up for your support. Your answer is correct, its about love above all else
this is kinda how I feel about Converge. An absolutely amazing band who deserve all their accolades from the industry that are great on tape, but just awful, awful vocals live.
didn't help that every song they played sounded exactly the same on stage - plus they were working on the assumption that putting the amps to 11 would make it seem like they were rocking. [it did not]
I think I heard them play at a concert at the Greek Theater back in Berkeley (they opened for Death Cab for Cutie)...I didn't care enough to pay to attend the concert but just loitered nearby. This was in the few years after I graduated that my family was living in the area, so I was back in the Bay Area for part of the summer during early grad school.
Do we still need to keep social distance? I stayed on the marking on the floor while standing in line at grocery store last night, but the guy behind me stood just a few inches from me. me too. this has been a nice change. keep distance between people yet the wait time is still the same. That guy told me "I can't stay back there" as if standing right behind me made his wait time any shorter.
I just logged into my United Mileage Plus account and they are offering a year of tickets for submitting your vaccine information to be applied to future flights. Free sweepstakes? Sure.
No 3 is going to LA and then Hawaii with his friends and Hawaii still requires tests so the host family is taking the boys and one girl to go get tested at long beach airport for their Hawaii visit.
my wife got us all to sign up for that. the funny thing is that she can't even plan one vacation a year, much less take advantage of a year of free flights ...
One year of free airfare will be awarded in the form of 26 travel certificates, each valid for a roundtrip flight for the winner and their designated companion.
Same. If a business demands it (only place I visit frequently that requires masks is cf-98's daycare), I have no problem wearing one. Otherwise, I don't bother.
That's my position as well. Carried in the truck to have handy for any situation that might arise that might be unclear, in which case I quickly grab it.
Allergies are also less of a problem since the mask seems to do well keeping pollen out. Also, I've gotten used to having a warm face on a cold windy day.
happy to do things to make other people comfortable, but perhaps more than others i really dislike wearing a mask: my glasses fog up, i cant see, it is uncomfortable, etc.
Fri night in NYC
- one typically crowded bar (Standard Biergarden near the High Line), everyone in line was wearing masks to get in. but once inside, no mask and moderately crowded.
- one restaurant asked for proof of vaccination and i got to use my NY Excelsior app for the first time and got a seat at the bar for dinner.
I still wear mine while out in public and in stores. I started running in the gym since No 1 wants to go lift and I bought one of the Under Armour workout masks. I'm extremely out of shape and it's hard to run wearing the mask once I start breathing hard. I find I stop for a few seconds every 3-5 min to catch my breath. No 1 said to think of it as running with a parachute.
Perhaps. I do know that when I'm running outside, it's easier to run breathing in fresh cool air. Under the mask when I get going breathing in the hot air makes it harder. Although I'm sure much of my issues running with a mask are that I'm out of shape.
I carry a mask with me when I leave my car. Unless I'm required to wear it, I don't wear it because I believe in the science. The exception to that rule is if I'm in a place where there are a decent amount of senior citizens who are also wearing them (eg, when I go to PT). I will then wear it as a courtesy to put their mind at ease. For all those fuckers who call cleaning and masks as hYgEiNe tHeAteR... yeah, but it's a theater of compassion to put my fellow human at ease. I don't mind a little discomfort to help my fellow human. I will put a mask back on if I get a whiff of news that vaccine-defeating variants are spreading in my area - and I'm pretty on top with tracking this data.
Hmmmm... I might be wrong, but I think you have that backwards. I vaguely remember the ancient Greeks thought a sneeze meant you were touched by a god, so "God bless you" is an affirmation, not protective. I have no idea why I know this.
It's weird to be sitting in an 80% full coffee shop, but I am also without power at home for the past 16+ hours after the heavy wind from a big thunderstorm. It also felt super weird last night after my phone was completely out of juice and I was fully cut off from the world (and living in the dark).
one of the guys in our cycling group, "the cranky riders," is moving away. someone hosted a nice afternoon get together for about 20 (riders+spouses). felt very NORMAL.
The Oakland A’s star Matts were not very welcoming to their opponent this weekend.
The A’s got three more homers from their two corner infielders on Sunday, in a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals to wrap up their four-game series at the Coliseum.
The Matts had an enormous weekend at the plate. Yesterday they each homered and combined combined for seven hits and seven RBI, in a blowout win for Oakland. This afternoon they kept right on rolling.
Not a good weekend for the Giants. Scherzer lasted all of twelve pitches in his start and then the Nats started Erick Fedde, Jefry Rodriquez and Joe Ross. The Giants scored all of three runs. Nats are not very good so a split was surprising.
Walker Buehler withstood an uncharacteristic bout of early wildness to beat the Rangers, continuing to anchor an impressive rotation, and the Dodgers held on to win 5-3 over Texas on Sunday at Dodger Stadium.
It was a leisurely stroll in the park for the Dodgers, with a five-run lead to start the ninth inning, but Phil Bickford retired none of the four batters he faced. Kenley Jansen was called in to clean up the mess and, though he allowed two singles of his to score one of his two inherited runners, he was able to record the final three outs for his 15th save of the season.
Texas scored three in the ninth, but left the bases loaded. Those were the Rangers’ only three runs of the game.
i know that Djokovic doesnt get as much love or good press as Federer and Nadal because of _who knows what_, but the down-from-2-sets win yesterday was as a good as anything i have ever seen in tennis
given that he is younger than the other 2, i suspect he'll end up the career Slams leader by the time they are all done. in fact, at his current pace he might even pass them by the end of the year.
I like Djokovic (heck, he's a lot more approachable than Federer/Nadal that I even have a tennis ball with his autograph from the US Open a few years ago because he still uses the main practice court), but I don't think he should necessarily get MORE credit for having a slow start and overcoming an overwhelmed Tsitsipas. Yes, he did make some great plays with everything on the line, but being tired after that epic win over Nadal is still not an excuse for falling behind when no one would have been surprised had he just won in straight sets.
Both Matts are far down the list. Olson is 7th and Chapman is 9th. So Olson won't even be voted in. That and the fact that Vlad Guerrero is having a monster season.
TCU weekend Rangers game
@JimmyChitwood was the Rangers game Mon night? Looks like United has either a 740 AM flight to SFO for 129 or a 7 PM flight for 119 for Tues.
Happy Dragon Boat Festival!

Last couple I bought there weren't great. Maybe I need to get the names of the Taiwanese aunties over in PTown.

I get the feeling you're not too fond of your FIL

Yes

Some people like Sonic, which I think is available there. I have Monkey Brains for free, and I like it, even though it's not up 100% of the time.

Happy rebirthday to SGB 2.0!

hope those new papers are BETTER
Have to say, I admire your sangfroid, not sure I'd be so chill.
Thank you for being so open and accepting to what was probably a very difficult process for SGB 2.0. You're a good dad and they're lucky to have you.
Thank You for being an example of parental love that everyone can - and should - draw from.
Hats off to you and your wife, and I hope this feels great for SGB 2.0. Have they chosen a very gender non-specific name?
It's non-gender specific name. It's a diminutive form for both male and female forms of a name in Russian. And because it's not a western name, it doesn't come with a lot of expectations with it. Then again, they have a lifetime of "come again? Spell that please."
This got me to think of English names that don't lean towards one gender or the other. Pat? Sam?
Jordan
Morgan. Ashley used to be more male and now way more female. Taylor.
I thought Camryn Rodgers was a guy but it was a girl. It sure sounded like a football player name.
Terry could be independent of gender.
There are quite a few
Daniel, Taylor, Cameron
Traci/Tracy/Tracey is somewhat spelling dependent.
So, the name ends in -ka? That's what I remember from being around Russian Studies majors in the 1980s.
good for you and your wife and SGB 2.0
That's great to hear. HNBD to SGB 2.0.

pretty decent band from Austin
They're ok, saw them at Merriweather, I have to say, I kinda liked them less after I saw them, which is really a rare reaction from me.
this is kinda how I feel about Converge. An absolutely amazing band who deserve all their accolades from the industry that are great on tape, but just awful, awful vocals live.

Re-emerging from Covid lockdown
Do we still need to keep social distance? I stayed on the marking on the floor while standing in line at grocery store last night, but the guy behind me stood just a few inches from me. I told him to get back and he refused and he got even closer to me. He was wearing a mask, but that was so annoying. Orange County, CA.

I still keep my distance because I don't like people up in my business. Maybe not 6 feet, but at least 3-4.

Mask or no Mask?
as requested for businesses. We also still have to wear them on public transport, in schools, and medical offices per state / county guidelines
Same. If a business demands it (only place I visit frequently that requires masks is cf-98's daycare), I have no problem wearing one. Otherwise, I don't bother.
Only when it's required. Otherwise, I'm vaccinated and don't feel any need.
That's my position as well. Carried in the truck to have handy for any situation that might arise that might be unclear, in which case I quickly grab it.
Mask, because my dry lips have become less of a problem ever since I've started to wear them.
Allergies are also less of a problem since the mask seems to do well keeping pollen out. Also, I've gotten used to having a warm face on a cold windy day.

I wonder if you get some of the same benefits as training at altitude.
Perhaps. I do know that when I'm running outside, it's easier to run breathing in fresh cool air. Under the mask when I get going breathing in the hot air makes it harder. Although I'm sure much of my issues running with a mask are that I'm out of shape.

This describes me, also.
I walked the dogs on Saturday and Sunday. When I went out Saturday, Mrs Slug said, "You know you don't need to wear a mask, right?"
"Indeed. I do it anyhow because it puts others on the street at ease."
"You're being too nice."
"I know."
Yeah, saying "bless you" after someone sneezes (probably) doesn't scare away evil spirits, but I still do it.
Hmmmm... I might be wrong, but I think you have that backwards. I vaguely remember the ancient Greeks thought a sneeze meant you were touched by a god, so "God bless you" is an affirmation, not protective. I have no idea why I know this.

Honestly, nobody knows. That's why it's so interesting.
Clippers do their Clippers thing and look great after looking horrible in Utah. Jazz lead series 2-1.

Suns sweep the Nuggets as Jokic gets tossed from Game 4
https://sports.yahoo.com/chris-paul-showed-his-mvp-merit-in-front-of-nikola-jokic-151355198.html
How many MVPs got tossed in their last game of the year?
Hah, probably none.
Tough for Jokic given that Denver lost their second-best player to injury and had to rely on him even more than before.
that makes their playoff run even more impressive.
Game #67: The Matts keep slugging in 6-3 win
https://www.athleticsnation.com/2021/6/13/22532534/oakland-as-game-67-kansas-city-royals-score-result
Giants lost to the Nats, 5-0
Not a good weekend for the Giants. Scherzer lasted all of twelve pitches in his start and then the Nats started Erick Fedde, Jefry Rodriquez and Joe Ross. The Giants scored all of three runs. Nats are not very good so a split was surprising.
There was some weirdness with a rainout and having to play a double-header, so I'm not reading too much into it.
Schwarber's lead-off HR off of Gausman in Gm 1 Sat still hasn't landed yet.
That said, Gausman's in the conversation for the NL Cy Young award in mid-June...not sure how many people out there bet that one in Vegas....
Walker Buehler throws up more zeroes to beat Rangers
https://www.truebluela.com/2021/6/13/22532398/walker-buehler-zeroes-mookie-betts-zach-mckinstry-dodgers-rangers-recap
Aaron Rodgers, Packers showdown: Green Bay's poor taste and petty ways proving hard to watch

French Open final.
i know that Djokovic doesnt get as much love or good press as Federer and Nadal because of _who knows what_, but the down-from-2-sets win yesterday was as a good as anything i have ever seen in tennis
given that he is younger than the other 2, i suspect he'll end up the career Slams leader by the time they are all done. in fact, at his current pace he might even pass them by the end of the year.
CAL
Marcus Semien leads all AL 2B in all-star votes.
Both Matts are far down the list. Olson is 7th and Chapman is 9th. So Olson won't even be voted in. That and the fact that Vlad Guerrero is having a monster season.
Go Bears!!!
