To the delight of Fire Starkey, Cal signs multi-year extension with KGO radio.

https://calbears.com/news/2020/6/15/athletics-news-cal-extends-partnership-with-kgo-radio.aspx

Fire Starkey's avatar

No mention of Joe though so I am hopeful a trip behind the woodshed with a shotgun is still coming

OskiOfTarth's avatar

Well, I guess Cal has to be worst in some category.

Ruey Yen's avatar

Cal Men's Golf alum Collin Morikawa made his 21st straight cut to open his pro career (record is 25 by a certain Tiger Woods). He also almost won his 2nd PGA tournament but lost in the first playoff hole. If he stays in his current form (good bet since consistency is his game, dating back to that brilliant college career) during the condensed schedule coming up, he should win a tournament or two.

OskiOfTarth's avatar

The only part of his game that currently isn't elite is his short game. Once he has that together in a couple of years, multiple majors are within his reach.

dcblue's avatar

Only made $817K. Life is tough.

Ruey Yen's avatar

On the other hand, the missed putt cost him $517k (the difference between 1st and 2nd place).

By the way, on the PGA money winning list for 2020, Morikawa is at No.20 with $1.90M just behind Tiger Woods with $1.96M (although Woods have played far fewer tournaments). Fellow Cal alum on the top 50 list include Byeong-Hun An at No.22 ($1.82M) and Max Homa at No.48 ($1.16M).

CruzinBears's avatar

Don't worry, OSU's quest is just a little bit shorter than ours

AndyPanda's avatar

We aren't under under any delusion that a Rose Bowl trip for anything other than a road game at UCLA every 4 years is likely any time soon though.

Community!

(Six seasons and a movie.)

TheScientist019's avatar

I finally got around to watching Community; I'm in the middle of the final season. There are a few great episodes around seasons 2 or 3 or so, but overall I think it's a bit overrated. Sorry, YWC.

sycasey's avatar

I don't use the word "overrated" in artistic criticism, but nothing is for everyone.

Seasons 2 and 3 are probably the strongest.

Cugel's avatar

Overrated? Compared to what?

There are creams for that if you hate yourself for being too dar.

in a semi-strange-racist upbringing ritual. whenever we would go to India for the summer as kids, my mom would make us smear the wet curb skimmed from cows milk and rub it all over our bodies. then it would dry, sort of like some facial mask and we would wash it off.

the whole point was to make our skin "whiter" because that is what was the best colored skin in British Colonial India.

TheScientist019's avatar

You are beautiful--no matter what they say.

Curds can't bring you down.

DC Trojan's avatar

That’s less worrisome an image but not much less

atoms's avatar

Wait, I didn't realize we had another DBD Indian in our midst!

What's up, brother 👊

DC Trojan's avatar

Not at all, I’d have a similar answer about myself

Ruey Yen's avatar

Raw apples. Because I apparently am mildly allergic to them now as an adult (a newish development from the past couple of years).

heyalumnigo's avatar

No 1 has had something similar with pit fruits like peaches in terms of new allergies. He thinks it's the skin. He also recently has gotten allergic to beer so he's switched to cider. He thinks it's the raw yeast.

Ruey Yen's avatar

The Internet tells me that adult developing apple allergy is relatively common. Something about birch pollen and possibly due to my trips to Europe where these birches are more prevalent.

Berkelium97's avatar

Walnuts. I loved them as a kid. Then I guess I ate too many and suddenly stopped liking them.

sycasey's avatar

Fast food, I guess.

Not so much that I hate it now, I just don't buy it anymore.

DC Trojan's avatar

Tomato soup. Winston Churchill.

Cugel's avatar

I don't think I ever "liked" Churchill, but there's much to admire as well as criticize in his career.

DC Trojan's avatar

I think my new lukewarm take on Churchill was that he finally fell into the right place at the right time - inasmuch as pointless defiance and treating the Germans like they were not white was exactly what was needed

DC Trojan's avatar

Needed to hold off the Germans that is

Wiata78's avatar

Disneyland! Loved it as a kid. But it got so crowded. And my kids never became fans.

Berkelium97's avatar

And expensive! It's amazing how much they've jacked up the prices in the last 20 years.

rocksanddirt's avatar

LIES! I still love the 'bell. though it doesn't love me as much any more.

Ruey Yen's avatar

One of 9 US states that I have yet to visit (along with Hawaii, Oregon, Maine, North Dakota, Montana, Arkansas, Nebraska, and Iowa).

atoms's avatar

The states I have not been to are: Hawai'i, Alaska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Maine, North Dakota. North Carolina I had a layover in Charlotte, but I did leave the terminal to go outside so I think it counts. So, I'm at 44 out of 50.

Cugel's avatar

I guess I've been to or lived in 40; no Alaska, N & S Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin Michigan, Louisiana, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine.

g.oso's avatar

Haven't been:

Idaho

Montana

N/S Dakota

Minnesota (flight layover, doesn't count)

Nebraska

Oklahoma

Florida

Vermont

Florida

Alaska

Ruey Yen's avatar

Since I actually took a chance and left the airport to briefly go to The Mall of America (went and found the old Metropolitan Stadium relics and had food at the food court), I count that as having been to Minnesota. My most questionable "visit of a state" was New Hampshire since I was with friends and we basically only hopped over to NH because their booze is cheap (the liquor stores are right at the border) on a trip back to VT from CT.

OskiOfTarth's avatar

Montana

North Dakota

Alaska

DC Trojan's avatar

I hear it’s where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.

Fire Starkey's avatar

Generally a boring, ugly, flat awful place. Portions of the southeastern part of the state have some Ozark-ness to them but its pretty paltry. Also, low alcohol beer and tons of stupid people. Endless butt of jokes though so they have that going for them.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Will be there on the road trip...the pup has 7 remaining states from the lower 48 on her list, and that is one of them...

OskiOfTarth's avatar

Speaking of states, which ones have you seen a Cal football game in? Mine (west to east):

WA (Seattle & Pullman)

OR (Eugene)

CA (Berkeley, SF, San Jose, LA, Pasadena - UC Los Angeles)

NV (Las Vegas Bowl)

AZ (Tucson, Tempe & Phoenix - Insight Bowl)

CO (Boulder)

MI (Ann Arbor)

GA (Athens)

NY (@Army)

FL (Tampa & Citrus in Orlando)

CruzinBears's avatar

CA (Berkeley, SF, Fresno, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, San Diego, San Jose, LA, Pasadena)

WA (UW)

TX (Armed Forces Bowl x2)

MS (Ole Miss)

MN (Minnesota)

OH (tOSU)

TN (Tennessee)

HI (Aloha Bowl)

NV (LV Bowl)

MD (Maryland)

Sydney, AUS (UH)

OskiOfTarth's avatar

Wow, this is like a snob list that I am totally jealous of. Only the biggest & best.

CruzinBears's avatar

I regret not being able to attend Northwestern, UNC and UT. Also I wouldn't put Fresno, Palo Alto, San Jose, LA nor MD on the biggest and best to visit list.

Cugel's avatar

I forgot Ft. Worth as well. Only one time.

Ruey Yen's avatar

For Football:

CA (Berkeley, Pasadena)

AZ (Tempe)

TX (Austin)

NC (Chapel Hill)

MS (Oxford)

For Basketball (mostly men):

CA (Berkeley)

heyalumnigo's avatar

I've only done Oregon (2015 ugh), Ca (Cal, Furd, Pasadena, South Central), Washington (2015), Texas, Ohio, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida (Citrus Bowl).

Erik Johannessen's avatar

WA (Seattle & Pullman)

OR (Eugene & Corvallis)

TX (Austin)

MN (Minneapolis)

IL (Champaign-Urbana)

OH (Columbus)

TN (Knoxville)

NJ (New Brunswick)

MD (College Park)

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Oh, and I guess Santa Clara as well, although that doesn't add a state

Cugel's avatar

Very impressive! I only got the bug to see away games late in life.

CA (Berkeley, Santa Clara x2, San Diego x3)

NV (Reno, Las Vegas Bowl)

AZ (Phoenix Cheez-it Bowl)

UT (Provo)

CO (Boulder)

TX (Austin)

MN (Minneapolis)

MS (Oxford)

Cugel's avatar

Right! I knew I forgot one: OH (Columbus)

OskiOfTarth's avatar

I thought it was now referred to as "The Ohio"

Cugel's avatar

oh and San Francisco, 2011 season & Fresno State

DC Trojan's avatar

That’s a pretty impressive list - much more effort than I’ve ever put into going to watch SC.

Cugel's avatar

They weren't in the slew of games on ESPN-U from the 80's featuring Bo Jackson yesterday.

Ruey Yen's avatar

It didn't work for me initially, but I just had to refresh a couple of times. I find it particularly amusing because my parents, particularly my mom, are pretty terrible at pointing in real life.

Wiata78's avatar

There’s a whole generation, including my parents, who believed you’re not supposed to point.

rocksanddirt's avatar

omg. that's wonderful.

White House interns

Ruey Yen's avatar

For the Trump photo, did the one person of color decide to take a seat farthest away from Trump? One would have figured that he got a different spot just for the photo op.

dcblue's avatar

My cousin's son was supposed to do WH internship between Jan. 15 and April 15 this year. I never did hear from him but I assume he was here as he was to start before the virus got bad. I've never met him, only seen pictures, and he could be in that picture as he looks like any other generic young, white guy.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I assume that he's pro Trump vs just want the WH internship experience. I would assume if you're a poly sci major you're only going to take a WH internship if you agree with the administration.

DC Trojan's avatar

It’s really looking like not being inside for too long and wearing a mask are the most effective ways to mitigate risk

sycasey's avatar

Yes, my hope was that these protests being outdoors would mean they are not high-risk events for COVID spread and that seems to be true (at least so far).

DC Trojan's avatar

I’m not sure that 14 days is enough time to be sure, since it seems to take longer for other increases to show up. Intuitively it’s plausible that one of these protests will be a superspreader event so if that doesn’t prove to be the case, I’d be pleased

sycasey's avatar

Right, that's why I say the evidence looks good "so far."

DC Trojan's avatar

Look at us agreeing here

Ruey Yen's avatar

La Liga restarted without fans (broadcast had some "virtual fans" in the main background) but some dude still invaded the field during Mallorca-Barca to try to take a selfie with Messi. The guy was quoted as saying along the line of despite the selfie being blurry and the security people forced him to delete it (maybe it was already in the Cloud), "it was a nice experience". https://www.espn.com/football/barcelona/story/4111709/pitch-invader-approaches-lionel-messi-despite-game-being-closed-to-fans

DC Trojan's avatar

I really thought I’d be more excited about the return of new live soccer and it turns out I can’t be bothered

Ruey Yen's avatar

I would be much more excited if/when they continue the Champions league. Most of the domestic leagues are pretty much already decided before the stoppage. I guess there may be drama down the line with Barca and Real Madrid in La Liga though.

DC Trojan's avatar

I had moved to watching what was on when I had a spare minute at the weekend. Up until the ‘rona closures I had to be at the office 5 days a week and wasn’t watching Champions league games as a result (I don’t have the interest or self discipline to avoid scores and watch a recorded version of the game later)

Fire Starkey's avatar

thats probably because you dont support the amazing Oxford United who are in the League 1 playoffs and will be going for Championship glory next season

DC Trojan's avatar

It’s true, all I have to look forward to is Liverpool winning the fucking league against Everton

Ruey Yen's avatar

Sounds about right, the Black Lives Matter car is in the main circuit and the Blue Lives Matter car is in the NASCAR minor league (currently the Xfinity series).

heyalumnigo's avatar

Like that one Nascar drive that said he's going to quit now due to banning the treason flag. Nascar tweeted back that they didn't even know who he was and his 12 followers. He also got roasted by others.

Wiata78's avatar

World record in a slightly obscure event. Still, Very impressive as he ran Alone. Cardboard cutouts in the stands!

Ruey Yen's avatar

I like that they put up some extra hurdles in the neighboring lanes.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Wow he destroyed it.

Is there a single track and field record more impressive than Edwin Moses winning every 400 M hurdle competition he entered for 9 years 9 months and 9 days? 122 races.

Wiata78's avatar

I’m a big fan of Edwin Moses.

SGBear's avatar

My wife and son blazed through all seasons of "Killing Eve". They liked it so much, my son talks to me in a bad Russian accent. Me? I am watching cooking shows. Currently watching Barbecue on Netflix. 7/19. Meh, someone filmed their excuse to travel the world.

atoms's avatar

I like doing bad Russian accent. Is very entertaining.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Just about to finish up Space Force. There are some good digs at the current administration but overall it was meh.

Cugel's avatar

Yeah, my take as well, mainly a missed opportunity. Great cast.

CruzinBears's avatar

I wanted to like it so much more, but gave up after 3 episodes. Some good moments, but overall meh

heyalumnigo's avatar

I stuck with it. I'm curious to see if Netflix will give them a second season.

CruzinBears's avatar

Re-watched You're The Worst on FXX. If you haven't seen it, it's a great five season show. Lots of dark comedy, tragic/complex characters, solid writing and acting.

Cugel's avatar

I May Destroy You is both really good and highly disturbing; the Insecure finale was excellent.

Watched "What's Up, Doc", Peter Bogdanovich's love letter to 1930's screwball comedies. I enjoyed it, but the womenfolk were less impressed. I've never thought much of Barbra Streisand as an actress, but I found her really compelling in this, Madeline Kahn was great as might be expected, and Ryan O'Neal was effective as the straight man.

Cugel's avatar

"The fender bender Judy causes as she crosses the street to the Bristol Hotel was added on the spur of the moment. When no stunt cars were available, Peter Bogdanovich instructed a crew member to rent two cars and make sure he got collision insurance. Then he staged the wreck before returning the battered cars."

Clever guy.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

That sounds like insurance fraud...?

At a roundtable Monday afternoon on protecting senior citizens during the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump had a novel response when asked about the number of covid-19 cases in the U.S. “If we stop testing right now, we’d have very few cases, if any,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

Why didn't we figure this out before? We could have avoided all this trouble.
