we have the day off from work today, 2nd year in a row.

such a contrast to last year when i took older daughter to a BLM protest.

I'm glad that this is now a federal holiday. Recognition of past wrongs is critical to moving forward as a multicultural and diverse nation.

Also, I am waiting for the other shoe to drop on the holidays at work. My guess is that Juneteenth may be added, but some other holiday will be discontinued.

Found out yesterday that I have today off.

My work apparently got us passes to the Columbia Employee Discount store in Richmond. I didn't know there was such a store there, but I'm also not the target demographic, given how bad I am at nature.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I didn't know there was a Columbia Employee Discount store here either. I went to the one in Portland when I worked at the mothership. Their prices are extremely good. I highly recommend it if you need any sort of outdoor gear.

That or the North Face outlet off Gilman. The prices there are always amazing and they frequently have additional sales off their already amazing prices.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

To add to this, I'm allowed 4 guests (I think), so if you guys are interested, we can plan a trip sometime before it expires on July 11. (I'm staying at my parents' in the Tri-Valley right now, though, so we just have to figure out the timing).

Membership Warehouse Shopping

heyalumnigo's avatar

I had a Sam's Club membership when I moved to Louisville because at the time they didn't have Costco. Some of the prices are a little cheaper than Costco for the same stuff (like $1 less) but overall the quality of their stuff is lower. Costco:Sam's Club :: Target:WalMart.

The one thing that Sam's Club does have is a 6 lb tub of Peter Pan Peanut Butter for about $9. MMMMMM. Great for making Muddy Buddies and my ex makes peanut butter balls for Christmas.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Not really membership warehouse shopping, but does anyone remember catalog stores, like Consumer's Distributing and Service Merchandise? Basically one large room with some display cabinets. You could see some of the items but you can also look through a large catalog, place an order, and they would bring it out for you. There was one in Pleasant Hill.

Similarly, BEST, had full stores with everything on display in a full showroom, you placed an order and it came down from a conveyor belt. The Best Buy by the Sunvalley Mall in Concord used to be a BEST. They also had a few stores with very original designs.

https://siteenvirodesign.com/content/best-products

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i think we had a wedding registry at Service Merchandise in Orlando because my wife knew that people would buy stuff for us from there even if we didnt register. so, by having a registry we were able to return everything for cash.

Terence's avatar

On my god the BeST Catalog.

Big box discount stores never worked in Singapore. We had Carrefour, the French version of Walmart that used to carry Costco's Kirkland brand. They closed down because the market was too small to make logistics cost effective, land was too expensive, and the vast majority of Singaporeans can't afford a car so it's not practical to haul big box stuff in a taxi.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I thought Carrefour is a grocery store/convenience store chain. I have been to a few in France/Belgium. Or at least they have some small stores right by or in train stations (or it's another chain with a similar name).

Scootie's avatar

They have regular supermarkets, mini markets and hyper markets. Something for everyone!

Terence's avatar

There's a minione near my office here, but giant ones in the suburbs.

Cugel's avatar

That's what I would have thought without any facts, same for France, where they have individual stores for just one thing.

Scootie's avatar

France is full of brilliant hypermarkets.

Cugel's avatar

Well, I guess just visiting Paris kinda leaves a different impression of what life in France as a whole is like.

DC Trojan's avatar

100%. When I was a kid we visited the south of France on holiday & my mother was evangelizing about the hypermarches for years afterwards

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

In contrast, Taiwan is somehow the top Costco-consuming population in the world???

heyalumnigo's avatar

is that per person? I would think with the number of stores in the US that the US would be much higher than Taiwan.

Terence's avatar

Credit to Cal grad Richard Chang!

GEMCO on North Main near Ygnacio Valley Road in Walnut Creek was a glimpse of the future. It's now a Target.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I remember going there. I think Target bought many of the GEMCOs.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I remember my dad having a card and having to show it to get in.

Wiata78's avatar

I think Target also bought Fedco.

Terence's avatar

Fedco! that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

Scootie's avatar

That was my local GEMCO when I was a tot! We lived very near that intersection.

MoriBear's avatar

where bouts? we first lived in on Walnut Blvd (at Sierra) and then in an Eichler opposite side of YVB from Heather Farms.

If you lived near Gemco, you musta eaten at Affagatso's (sp?). It was my go-to birthday meal when I was a ute. moved to the "near Gemco" location after being next to Walnut Bowl in the mid-70s (near Lippert's)

heyalumnigo's avatar

She was right by the Fuddruckers which is now gone.

MoriBear's avatar

Fuddruckers? when I was living in the Creek, the only Fuddruckers was in The Willows (Concord? Pleasant Hill?)

So much development out that way near BART. I remember when La Mirage (name?) was a hold out and all the new buildings were build around it. wonder if it's still there...?

heyalumnigo's avatar

Was La Mirage over where California runs into N. Main? If so then I think that's gone. The Fuddruckers was right across the street from Target. It closed down a few years ago I think. The one at the Willows is still open.

Scootie's avatar

I think there was also a White Front?

MoriBear's avatar

not sure what that is...

GB III's avatar

White Front was an appliance store. I remember my parents buying a washing machine there. That was a long, long time ago.

heyalumnigo's avatar

heh...I thought Scootie meant the GEMCO had a white facade.

MoriBear's avatar

this is the GEMCO that I was gonna mentions (the fam lived in WC at the time). Like GEICO is/was Gov't Employee Insurance Co., wasn't Gemco a Gov't Employee thing also?

[Checks internets...per Wikipedia]

"GEMCO" never was an acronym, despite rumors to the contrary (e.g., that it stood for such terms as "Government Employees' Merchandising Company"). The letters were simply an easily pronounced and remembered name.

SGBear's avatar

Costco ended up being a net negative for us because the savings we'd get on staples would be more than offset by impulse buys we didn't need. I let my membership lapse because I didn't spawn enough loin goblins to make it worthwhile.

heyalumnigo's avatar

What about gas? Not counting the driving to get there, I've seen prices 20-40 cents cheaper per gallon. Even at just 10 gallons a week, that's $2-4 savings per week which is $104-208 savings per year.

In college my roommates and I would go once a month and stock up on the unhealthiest stuff. Bagel dogs, pizza rolls, burritos, spaghetti sauce, etc.

Then when we had babies, diapers and formula.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

bagel dogs and the chicken cordon bleu were the best frozen items for college meals.

heyalumnigo's avatar

We also did have the chicken cordon bleus as well. Oh and chicken nuggets. We had my parent's old toaster oven and one time we packed so many chicken nuggets in there they caught on fire a little.

FiatSlug's avatar

Indeed, what about gas?

We very rarely DO NOT fill-up at Costco because of the aforementioned price differential. We fill-up on Costco gas only when we're shopping at the store otherwise or are close to the warehouse anyhow (within 1.5 miles) on another errand or on our way out of town to Sonoma County or Sacramento County.

DC Trojan's avatar

If you leave near enough one, it may well be worth it. The closest costco gas stations to me are 25 & 35 miles away, and they're not on the way to anywhere I need to be. I think maybe Maryland Costco locations just suck 😂

Ruey Yen's avatar

I thought the Beltsville Costco was conveniently located near College Park. But IIRC, I thought the gas stations near it also had gas that was cheaper than other places.

DC Trojan's avatar

I suspect it is, but I am not conveniently located near either of those places.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Yeah when the drive is that far it isn't worth it to go for gas all the time.

clapdoc's avatar

I have a Costco gas near work, which makes it worthwhile.

AndyPanda's avatar

The Costcos in the area are usually so jammed the time it takes to do business there is so great it makes the savings available often seem not worth the time.

Scootie's avatar

Pro tip: Costco before 10:30AM on a weekend is damn near paradise.

AndyPanda's avatar

I have noticed you can actually get in the parking lot early on Sunday mornings. Saturday at the two near here, you would have to be there before 7.

Scootie's avatar

What time does it open? Mine opens at 9.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

they were ok to go to in the past (20 yrs). i cant remember the last time i went.

i am not sure you actually save that much given the large quantities. on the other hand if that is what you need i suppose it might save some, but it not worth the hassle for me

Scootie's avatar

Things I stock up on at Costco:

Ribeyes, which I individually wrap and freeze

Kirkland brand individually vacuum packed chicken breasts

Canned garbanzos

Canned San Marzano tomatoes

Olive oil (not the big 3 litre ones, but they regularly have great brands in 1l bottles for $11)

Kerrygold butter

Comté

Fresh mozzarella

Prosciutto in 3oz packs

Charmin

Bounty select-a-size paper towels

Disposable razors

Advil and Aleve

Flonase

Tejava in 20oz bottles

Tide

Aperol

Roli Roti chicken stock

The allergy medicines are a must stop when I'm home.

Terence's avatar

I go all the time when I’m home. Hot dogs, a giant slab of salmon, steaks

Ruey Yen's avatar

Even though I did not have an active Costco membership, I still go eat the Hot Dogs back in the day when going to the movies was a thing. The Costco nearest to me was right by the movie theater complex. So that's a pre-movie snack even if I wasn't necessarily hungry.

heyalumnigo's avatar

yeah they cannot charge a membership for the food court. Also in some states they cannot charge a membership for the alcohol.

Cugel's avatar

But they make you pay in cash

heyalumnigo's avatar

The ones I've always been to all allowed card. Since just before corona, they have self order kiosks for food.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I don't think that's true anymore, from my most recent visit which was still over a year ago.

heyalumnigo's avatar

In the Bay Area they have a Molinari and Sons whole 3 lb italian dry salami. It used to be just over $15 for it but recently the price has gone up to about $21. Still a great price for it. And it's so so good.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i like getting their $1.50 hot dogs if i go. that helps kill the time while my wife actually buys what she "thinks she needs" from Costco

heyalumnigo's avatar

Best lunch ever.

goldenone's avatar

Used to get the hot dogs or pizza when I lived on the Peninsula.

heyalumnigo's avatar

When I worked in Pleasanton, we used to drive to the Livermore one for samples and hot dogs.

DC Trojan's avatar

The only time when Costco would have been useful for me was when I had children in diapers... and since it was a lengthy round trip to the nearest one at the time, the savings would have just gone to covering the gas use. So we never bothered.

Terence's avatar

The head of marketing for CostCo Taiwan and China is Richard Chang, who some of the older poster might remember as a player on the KJ era Cal Bears basketball teams.

Finally done with all the pasta salad I had made for the picnic on Sunday. Ugh, never make too much pasta salad.

1 was a traditional mayo/mustard macaroni salad with artichoke hearts, olives, salami - this was great when fresh and great as leftovers

2 was a romesco sauce - which was great when fresh but after a couple days of leftovers became much more blah.

might do some yoghurt basted chicken this weekend. or maybe meatballs

Shohei Ohtani will enter the Homerun Derby this year. That should be fun. I actually think that Coors Field might suppress the number of homers hit despite the thinner air because it takes more time for those balls to land (then again, they never did that good of a job enforcing that the pitcher does not throw again until the previous ball has landed...particularly in that one year when Bryce Harper had the big comeback).

Giants get a lot of hits, score a lot of runs, have a dandy old time

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2021/6/17/22539364/san-francisco-giants-diamondbacks-recap

I have a little bit of a confession to make. I was a tiny bit scared of the San Francisco Giants four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

It had nothing to with a lack of faith in the Giants.

It had nothing to do with San Francisco mustering a paltry three runs in their previous four games.

It had everything to do with the Diamondbacks being unsustainably bad.

It’s not that I thought the Diamondbacks would break out of their awful slump, which saw them enter Oracle Park on a 10-game losing streak, with 27 losses in their last 30 games, and 19 consecutive defeats on the road. I didn’t think that at all. I promise, there was not pessimism coursing through my veins.

sycasey's avatar

Whoever manages that account is doing a great job.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

The Yaz loss was devastating. D'backs are 2-28 their last 30...mind boggling.

Ruey Yen's avatar

The last time that the DBacks won on the road was when they swept the Braves in a double-header, including MadBum's not-official-no-hitter. I curse at them silently, in my mind that day; apparently, I may have a superpower.

Some guy came in last in his Fantasy Football League - so as punishment, he had to spend 24 hours in a Waffle House. He could reduce his time by eating 1 Waffle = 1 less hour. He's on 6 Waffles and ten hours to go as of right now

https://twitter.com/LeeOSanderlin/status/1405633271552253954?s=20

Ruey Yen's avatar

I was very surprised by how that thread went viral. Maybe it's just me, but I think spending half a day at a Waffle Hous and eating something like 12 waffles in 3 stints would be very very doable. This guy apparently had a few podcasts ready, but even if you can't just watch some movies/games to pass the time. My normal-ish days (occasionally pre-COVID but definitely the past year plus) are like this except that I would need to track to a Waffle House or some other place to be fed food.

Cugel's avatar

I'll never forget my one and only time eating at a Waffle House:

After landing at the beeuutiful Columbus airport, we made sure the rental car wasn’t red, checked into the swank airport Embassy Suites, and sought sustenance. It being after midnight by this point, options were few, but then we saw the burning letters in the fragrant Ohio night sky, and knew we were saved:

(photo of Waffle House sign at night)

OMG the food here must have been the best in the whole of the state, because they had two (two!) armed guards to protect it! We never have any food that’s so fancy in California that it requires that much protection.

As told by Cugel’s son OaktownRush: The Waffle House has the ambiance of a high school cafeteria filled with 25-35 year old felons. Florescent lighting, armed guards, greasy food — it had it all and I was in love. The food was affordable on any budget and my hash browns left a visible puddle on my plate. Waffle House in California might lead me down a road to morbid obesity, but on a road trip, it just doesn’t get any better.

Ruey Yen's avatar

Similarly, I have a fond memory of my family stopping by a Waffle House for food in the middle of the night drive.

While living in the DC area, there was kind of a bubble (between DC and Baltimore) where there was no Waffle House, but you can find one by going in every direction out of it. I have eaten at the one north of Baltimore but south of Delaware several times (often at 2-3 AM when I was the only customer.

I think there are some more urban locations, particularly in college towns and I am sure that's a different experience. The Waffle House stand is also one of the more popular concessions at SunTrust/Truist Park in Atlanta. I thought the food is solid and it has that feeling of reliability (even if I have personally observed the cook being somewhat visibly upset when I pulled up at 3 AM and he is out smoking).

Now living in Pittsburgh, there isn't one that is close to me but in towns 20-30 miles away. I think it is another Waffle House near Columbus but I have stopped at one in that area when I was driving back from Cincinnati once.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I've been there once, with No 1 in Raleigh right before he dropped me off at the airport. No 3 and I used to do Huddl House which is like a more upscale WH. Biscuits stacked with sausages, hash browns, cheese, covered in gravy. MMMM

And flashed some in the Fiesta Bowl last year v Iowa St, plus he's the starter on a top 25 team...

Garbers definitely could play his way onto that list of top 50 or some-odd QBs in the nation, but he's gonna have to stay healthy for the full slate, and make more consistent throws...if they grasp Musgrave's O, tho, and stay relatively healthy, it can come together. Be nice to find some explosive plays here and there, tho.

More evidence that the national media is not giving the Bears a pass for the COVID disaster of 2020, tho....Vegas has the over/under at 6, with the under trending.
