and yes I can verify during my time coaching No 3 for all-stars and travel ball that the parents are the worst. I don't think our league had a very good reputation around the state.
Also I've noticed the more competitive the tournament the worse parents are. The local league games are fairly laid back. District all-stars, a little more vocal. We never had issues with districts so it was fairly laid back. State was a little more competitive. The 9-year old tournament our fans got into it with another league in our city we had history with. The tournament director threatened to toss out all fans for this game.
Every year Regionals was even more vocal. On umps with every bad call. And we would frequently see the same umps for the state tournaments. The head umpire in charge was the same for a couple of the regionals we were at. He did a really good job.
Sometimes when I'd attend a game as a parent/nonref, other parents would actually encourage me to yell at the refs. I explained to one father why I thought he was incorrect. Next season I found that he had become a voluteer referee himself.
True "lobsters" are only found in the Atlantic north (Canada, US, British Isles). Spiny lobsters (the kind without claws) and Langostino Lobsters are not closely related to true lobsters.
Mockingbirds can be relentlessly nocturnal. I learned this recently because one has started perching at the top of one of my neighbor's trees and screaming from about 11:30pm to 5am every day.
Last year I went up to a local park to read. The bench I sat on had a bush behind it that apparently had a mockingbird nest in it. I was divebombed into submission and had to move to another bench. I watched as others got the same treatment.

It is just a block away from my favorite cycling cafe, Rapha, where I usually park myself in the mornings and watch the bike races in weekday mornings.
there's a twitter subculture of North American cyclists whose schtick is basically "we should be more like the Dutch" and while there's only one way to go for cycling infrastructure in the US, you can't magically make Houston into Haarlemmermeer by adding some bike lanes - but the converts are convinced.
I love those things! If I could do it all over again, I would get one of those cargo/kid hauler bikes, maybe the big dorky two-wheels-in-front tricycle kind. By the time I got hip to that, we already had the little bike trailer, and then those darn kids just grow so fast. Those tricycle bikes can haul a lot of groceries after the kids out grow them. When you start to get old and doddering, you can still keep cranking them without worrying about balance issues.
well, the town is small enough, and built out with enough bike paths that you can reasonably do a lot of your trips with a bike. There was an estimate a few years ago that something like 25% of all trips in town were done by bike.

Yes. My friend wanted to try to shuck her own oysters, but we convinced her it was too risky, so we ate at the Hog Island cafe instead. There was also another oyster place we passed by that looked popular.
If you can shuck oysters, the go to move at Hog Island is to reserve a table which comes equipped with a charcoal grill nearby, and to buy and shuck your own oysters, then BBQ them. Or raw.
I spent all morning and afternoon smoking a pork shoulder on Monday. Today we're making fried rice with some of the leftovers. It should be *chef's kiss*
Used up my jar of fermented garlic ginger paste and made roasted garlic ginger chicken thighs. Roasting differently marinated chicken in my cast iron is now like 35% of my meals.
Good news for Dems is that it seems like Stansbury outpaced their margins in 2020, which would indicate that the pro-D political environment has not changed much since then.
Representative Nancy Mace (SC) allegedly is vandalized. Worryingly, the graffiti writers seemed to have picked up Nancy's handwriting ticks AND avoided spray painting any non-power washable parts of the house, leaving all that nice white siding clean. The antifa is coming from inside the house Nancy!
Apparently California is giving out random $1.5M prizes to those who have been vaccinated. Our boss talked about it today during our monthly zoom waste of time staff meeting.
was texting with a college friend last night who lost his uncle to Covid - apparently a couple of the uncle's friends got sick, and then 2 weeks later the uncle was dead. Just never got round to getting vaccinated (wasn't politically opposed or anything). This friend lost his dad to brain tumors in late '18, his brother to cancer last November, and his mother is increasingly in the grip of dementia... so he's been having a wild time but in a bad way :(
It really does. And the only way he catches a break at this point is when his mother passes away, which while inevitable is not something he'd wish for.
Actually it looks like he's retiring next year. And announcing it this year means he wants a farewell tour, which sounds about right. Dean and Roy Williams both retired after the season.
No 1 said that LeBron walked off the bench with like 4 min left. That's a pretty shitty thing to do. He pointed out that the last time he did it with the Cavs, I think, he came out the next game and brought it.
I don't like LeBron and hope the Lakers get crushed next game.
The worst finals would be Nets/Lakers. I also don't like James Harden.
I'm always in a weird position as a Lakers fan. On one hand, I have to say they are my favorite NBA team. On the other, I find the Jeanie Buss ownership regime really campy in their marketing and also in their refusal to accept advanced analytics. You can't really say the Lebron experiment failed, but it certainly isn't a recipe for long-term success.
The Oakland A’s ended the month of May in a slump at the plate, but they emphatically put that behind them on the first day of June, led by the No. 9 hitter in their lineup.
The A’s exploded for a dozen runs against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, snapping their three-game losing streak with a 12-6 victory at T-Mobile Park. That’s more than they’d scored in their previous four contests combined, and along the way they homered twice after five days without going deep.
From Friday through Monday the A’s totaled just 10 runs, and for the first few innings this evening it was looking like more of the same. Oakland struck first but Seattle answered back harder, taking a 4-1 lead in the 4th and knocking out ace starter Chris Bassitt for his shortest outing of the year.
I really like Alex Wood. I think he’s awesome. I’m happy he’s on the San Francisco Giants, a team I watch roughly 162 times a year due to ample doses of emotional attachment and employer obligations.
You probably weren’t expecting me to start a recap for a game that the Giants lost 8-1, in which Wood saw his ERA balloon by more than a full point, with those words.
But it’s true, and I was reminded of it on Tuesday, even as Wood allowed 7 earned runs and failed to make it out of the fourth inning.
Nah. The disaster was at the top of the third inning, continuing into the 4th. Wood lost command of his bread-and-butter slider. And it wasn't like he wasn't getting calls on the corners. He was off. And then he got in his head and he became really wild - missing the plate by a mile.
The Cardinals rallied for a run off Blake Treinen in the ninth inning to beat the Dodgers, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.
Treinen, who was unavailable Monday because “his body didn’t feel right,” a condition on which manager Dave Roberts declined to elaborate, was healthy enough to pitch a perfect eighth inning on nine pitches. In his first game since Friday, Treinen pitched in parts of two innings for the fifth time this season.
Tyler O’Neill opened the ninth with a single to center, then stole second. Edmundo Sosa tried to sacrifice O’Neill to third but his one-strike bunt was foul. Sosa hit the next pitch past a diving Justin Turner at third base to drive in the go-ahead run.
Cardinals had 2 really good defensive plays that prevented a Dodgers win.
- Lux shattered his bat and hit a blooper with runners on 2nd and 3rd and the CF made a diving catch.
- Betts hit a ball to deep LF with runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 outs and probably would've scored Bellinger from 1st but the LF took a great line to the ball and made a running catch at the fence. Just hit it off the end of the bat. No 1 and I thought it was gone off the bat.
I'm not sure how to even read these preseason predictions. Probably many of them are based on last season, which is probably not representative for many reasons.
Would like Marshawn Lynch to comment on Naomi Osaka.

Tell the DBD a random fact
Champagne got its cachet when the King's physician prescribed it for Louis 14th health. Before that, it was just one of many sparkling wines of France.

Wasn't the term "apple" once used to apply to a wide variety of fruits? Hence, pineapple?
Interesting!
The Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy nor Roman.
Nor an empire.

Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas day in the year 800. The pope refused to recognize Irene as Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) when she came to power in 797 as sole ruler because she was a woman, so he crowned Charles.
Though it must be noted that Charlemagne never made any claims to be the legitimate rule of the ERE.
Hmmmm... It was Christian, so I guess they considered themselves Holy, but wasn't very Roman - if Romance language is the determining factor.
I thought the "holy" part of the name came from their claiming legitimacy through the papacy?
There were a lot of christological controversies at the the time as well. East and West had split pretty much after the Council of Chalcedony.
Chalcedon
Ah, that too.
HeyAlumniGo and I used to umpire youth baseball (LMYA) in Moraga while in HS/Cal.
we would show up on Sat mornings for one or two games.

yeah that was fun. I think it was jr year in HS maybe?
and yes I can verify during my time coaching No 3 for all-stars and travel ball that the parents are the worst. I don't think our league had a very good reputation around the state.

Surfed for the first time in three weeks this morning, terrible quality of waves and I only caught one, but we're back in the water baby!
Also starting an eight week home weight lifting plan that my wife is currently on week four of. First time I've done one of these with the intention on sticking with it to the end. Looking to drop 15-20lbs and I have never sincerely incorporated weights into my workout plan since college. We'll see how it goes.
There have been innovations since the last time I went to the doctor (maybe 2 years ago)!
1) She asked if I wanted to be weighed, rather than that being expected, which is cool.
2) When I said sure, she had me get on the table. The table was a scale!!! How cool is that?
My mom informed me of the optional weigh-in a year or two ago and I think I've only weighed in once since then.
The usual yesterday & Monday, and later today.
I added a loop around Roosevelt Island to my run this morning. Glad I did because I happened across a snapping turtle laying its eggs on the side of one of the trails. Cool to see.
achilles surgery update >>> today is 3 mo from surgery. got permission to ride my bike outside!!
going to go for a nice easy ride on flat roads just to get back into the swing of things. hopefully something a little longer and more fun this weekend.
Congrats! That must be a relief.

Tulips (and other horticulture)
When I was in elementary school we had to go to the Keukenhof ( https://keukenhof.nl/en/ ) and I remember being a bit miffed about being dragged to such a tourist cliche because even then I was a little ray of sunshine. Now I'd probably enjoy a visit. One of the early signs of spring was tour buses, full of German tourists, with tulips strung across the front.
I took a picture there of a windmill which must be a favorite tourist photo spot, because my daughter went there several years later and coincidentally took exactly the same picture.
Heh, I was just watching a PBS show that featured the Keukenhof this weekend. Looked like a great assortment of flowers around there.
Were they up at 5am to put their towels on the beach chairs to save them?
(This is apparently a Germans in Thailand thing that everyone else hates)
Oh not just Thailand, I can assure you. I've seen it in Egypt, France and Spain as well.
ha! well, if there's a Dutch beach fancy enough to have beach chairs already out, we never went there. But the German tourists always had the most elaborate setups for wind management - windbreaks, trenches, you name it. Basically they got to the north sea and started digging in, old habits die hard etc.

I'm sure that in the late 70s there were still German tourists pretending that they hadn't been to the Netherlands before

haha, yes. they do charge crazy $$
looks like there is a store/clubhouse in HK ...
Yeah I have jerseys from Tokyo, LA, SF. The HK one is tiny (as is Tokyo's)but LA's is maybe my ideal retail location.
i have a good amount of Rapha as well. their winter/cold weather stuff is my favorite especially relative to other offerings.

we had some Dutch diplomat neighbors for a while.
it was always a treat when they bought out the Dutch "tadpole" cargo bike with enough seating for 4 kids in the front compartment.
i can't imagine seeing those on the streets in NYC or Brooklyn!
There are several of those in Davis that I see regularly.
Davis is bike crazy, or heaven.
well, the town is small enough, and built out with enough bike paths that you can reasonably do a lot of your trips with a bike. There was an estimate a few years ago that something like 25% of all trips in town were done by bike.

It's like a crossover between a bike and a wheelbarrow.
Looks pretty reasonable, actually. The cargo area is low and centered, so managing the additional weight looks pretty easy.
and some are motorized
I feel like a Cal community is one where it's okay to admit weird interests.... turns out there are all sorts of variations - bikes with front trike steering & articulated suspension ( https://chike.de or https://www.butchersandbicycles.com/mk1e-vario ) or compact city versions ( https://muli-cycles.de/en/shop ) or handmade customs ( https://www.eliancycles.com ) and so on and so forth
There is a correct number of bikes to own - it's n+1 where n is the current amount of bikes you own.
Also, d-1, where d is the number of bikes which would cause a divorce from your partner.
Definitely see the front bucket seat bikes around Venice/Santa Monica. also more and more of the front cargo bikes with food deliveries
they certainly make sense in a more compactly built area like that
In a different 'cargo' bike direction, I commute using a Kona Ute. https://www.konaworld.com/electric_ute.cfm
Apparently they only sell the electric bike version now.
Jesus, as much $$$ as a used car.
nice! I like those "long tail" bikes also - Tern makes one rather like Kona, as do Surly.
No judgement... none, no I mean it!
I shudder to think about riding a Dutch bike from Uptown to the Heights in 95 degree/80% humidity weather. Even if it's via protected path. (There is one actually, and I only rode from late fall through early spring)

Austin Powers
I know I am going to shock you all when I tell you I've never seen an Austin Powers movie.
They were written as a satire of the campy british spy stuff of the sixties, but ended up actually being british spy stuff of the sixties.
I"ve only ever seen clips - never watched a full Austin Powers movie.
same
The later two had their moments but the first one is brilliant
^^this^^ Although seeing it now, it will seem a bit dated.
watched it recently bc someone in my neighborhood was playing the theme song extremely and Harriet had to stop to listen to it,. She was totally mesmerized by the sound of the music. And yes it's completely dated
I don't know if I should be proud or ashamed of the fact that my 12-year-old son really liked the first two Austin Powers movies.
What is everyone's favorite scene? Mine is in the first movie, where Dr. Evil keeps saying "shh" to Scott. "Let me tell you a little story about a man named *shh*".
I enjoyed the opening credit scene in the second one.
and really, all three are adequate stupid comedies. No complaints (except some of the gross out humor doesn't hit with me)
I quite enjoyed the first one when it came out.
Will Ferrell's bit where he gets dropped into the fire pit but just keeps on talking cracks me up.
I also like the part where Austin assumes the USA lost the Cold War and then has to backtrack with "Yay capitalism!"

We'll be going to Pt. Reyes in a few weeks. We like to stop by the Cowgirl Creamery and check out what ice cream options they have. Their sandwiches are also pretty good.
One thing I recall about Pt. Reyes is that they were not big on public restrooms, to put it nicely. Cowgirl Creamery was cool though. Besides dairy, had a lot of knicknacks and things.
I saw a sign in the grocery store around the corner that they sell buffalo gelato! I was intrigued, but the line was long.
is that oyster place still there? hog island i think. i like stopping by there w/ some beers and chillin' on the picnic benches.
Or raw.
The Italian place in Pt. Reyes Station is legit.
if you have the gloves and some practice it is not too risky. but w/o the gloves i feel like i am going to impale myself every time.
I spent all morning and afternoon smoking a pork shoulder on Monday. Today we're making fried rice with some of the leftovers. It should be *chef's kiss*
I made this porcini gravy last night. It was GD delicious.

you had some turkey necks just laying around?
Southern grocery stores sell necks, backs, gizzards, livers, and other bits.
Used up my jar of fermented garlic ginger paste and made roasted garlic ginger chicken thighs. Roasting differently marinated chicken in my cast iron is now like 35% of my meals.

Hell Yeah!
Yep. It's Budweiser, though (NYSE:BUD). Maybe it will include craft beers that they own...

Somehow, I don't that will be the case.

Today in Covid 19
Apparently California is giving out random $1.5M prizes to those who have been vaccinated. Our boss talked about it today during our monthly zoom waste of time staff meeting.
WV is doing a cash vaccine-lottery, but they're also doing a lottery for five rifles and five shotguns.

shooting at viruses can really improve your marksmanship
in all fairness, if the bullet hits a virus, you can probably be certain that virus is dead.
was texting with a college friend last night who lost his uncle to Covid - apparently a couple of the uncle's friends got sick, and then 2 weeks later the uncle was dead. Just never got round to getting vaccinated (wasn't politically opposed or anything). This friend lost his dad to brain tumors in late '18, his brother to cancer last November, and his mother is increasingly in the grip of dementia... so he's been having a wild time but in a bad way :(
jeezus that blows.
It really does. And the only way he catches a break at this point is when his mother passes away, which while inevitable is not something he'd wish for.

oh wow...both Roy Williams and Coach K in the same season.

Had the Lakers not been so injured late this season, I'm sure they would be in the Western Conference finals.
i like Harden. he is amazing to watch and doesnt come across bad (but i dont watch/read that much)
I don't like his playing style. drive and try to draw a foul, which never works in the playoffs. And travel when taking his stepback 3.
maybe i'll try to go to Nets-Bucks game in round 2
I'm rooting for a Portland or Phoenix/Milwaukee final
Unfortunately I'm not sure the Bucks can take out the Nets
Agreed, the Nets appear unstoppable and may have a Warriors like run of 4-5 game series all the way to the Finals
Nets put Celtics out of their misery, and Brad Stevens moves up to the front office.

Game #57: A’s bust slump with 12-run outburst, led by Tony Kemp
https://www.athleticsnation.com/2021/6/2/22464577/oakland-as-game-57-seattle-mariners-score-result
Bassitt: 4 ip, 4 runs, 6 Ks, 1 BB, 1 HR, 6 hits, 83 pitches, 90.6 mph EV
Giants doomed by disastrous fifth inning
https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2021/6/1/22464429/san-francisco-giants-angels-final-score-alex-wood
Dodgers fall in 9th inning to Cardinals
https://www.truebluela.com/2021/6/1/22464266/dodgers-bullpen-game-fine-offense-meh-cardinals-defense-good-recap
