Herm Edwards played for and left Cal football twice, once in 1972 and once in 1974. In 1973, he played at a JC. In 1975, he played for San Diego State. He went undrafted, but still ended up as a fixture with the Philadelphia Eagles. Herm is under fire for yet-to-be-leveled charges against his coaching administration. However, it is worth pointing out that he is innocent unless proven guilty.
The missus and I are on a live comedy ticket purchasing binge. So far, Nate Bargatze in August, the Moontower Festival in Austin in September (basic wristband to see the "nobodies"), Dave Attell and Maria Bamford at same festival as separate tickets, Tom Segura next January and Patton Oswalt next February. Looking forward to all these shows
Other than to see a famous celebrity comedian in person, I kind of don't really get going to live comedy shows when many of those now do end up as specials on TV. I do understand that many comedians do some different materials that they will never do for TV (or on a different show of the same tour), but the perk/threat of going to a live show is to be picked on by the comedian (in a small venue) which I would just dread.
Maybe I am discounting the experience of laughing with a large group of people. I kind of prefer an empty movie theater to a full theater for example. Live music is a different beast because there are things that you can't quite hear as well on tape...though I also don't like when you are far enough away from the stage that you can still hear yourself think that people nonetheless still either sing to the songs or have full-blown conversations (because they don't care about the opening act).
But... a comedy (movie) is sooooooo much more fun with a full house. First time I watched Blazing Saddles the only seats for me & the girlfriend were in the front row at the edge - unforgettable experience.
Seeing Bill Burr live in Hong Kong 5 years ago is still one of the favorite things I've ever done - it's actually really similar to a concert. There are moments and things that you can't pick up from watching the special that you can in person.
If you have stupid employees who may have accidentally killed multiple major business relationships with one "Enter" pressed and an internal system that has apparently been glitching and sending internal deal summation documents to the suppliers giving away our strategy, budgets and value gained from the contracts signed... is it okay to punch a puppy? “There are at least two kinds of games,” states James P. Carse as he begins this extraordinary book. “One could be called finite; the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing the play.”
sort of, but it outlines the destination type games (finite) and journey type games (infinite) but with a moral view that the infinite is "better" and more sustainable.
i find the contrast and all the examples very well done.
I made butter chicken (but ordered some naan and a palak paneer that ended up being very mediocre). Pan grilled chicken + a ghee/tomato/fenugreek/garam masala/cumin/cream sauce goes pretty good together! who knew?
I am having Di Fara pizza and a pitcher of beer tonight - at the pizzeria. It's an offshoot from the legendary place in Brooklyn, started by his nephew. It is an outstanding slice.
Big Before Sunrise x Asgard vibes from the latest Loki. Fun to do character development, drop hints about the TVA -only worry is that with only 6 episodes in the run, is there enough room to tell the full story?
So... my son is of the opinion that there is so really good-to-great TV, but he (admittedly) watches either great TV, or trash or sports (of course).
But thing there's good for fun, far from great TV as well, we watch Legends of Tomorrow, which while I would never really rep it in "oh ya gotta watch this", is goofy, silly fun.
I am of the opening that Legends is the lone Arrowshow now that's worth watching just because it's so out there. The other shows take themselves too seriously that they are in that "meh" range for me now.
Have you seen Trying on AppleTV+? Not at the same level as Catastrophe or Losesick – more light and less funny – but (after a so-so S1) I've been enjoying S2 a lot. (Similar to Mythic Quest...except MQ had a stronger back half of S1, so I was more optimistic)
And related to Lovesick: Johnny Flynn has a peripheral relationship to The Detectorists (a cameo and wrote the theme), which is a lovely dramedy in the current British vein, starring "Gareth" from The Office.
Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff Mark Milley talks about critical race theory and it's relation to the military (it's a good answer except for smirking Matt Gaetz)
I have a dream of creating an online site when I'm retired that's titled something along the lines of "On Your Grave", which will detail the deeds and final resting location of bad dead people that are accessible by the public. I will specifically discourage people from dancing, pissing, or otherwise doing anything bad on their graves - but... I want it to include some fun, positive things to go see too... a bit of a "Bay Area Backroads" type of road trip guide
Almost 900 Secret Service members have tested positive for the coronavirus since March 2020, according to a watchdog report, and many of those infected had protection assignments that included the safety of the president and vice president.
The nonprofit Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington published a report Tuesday detailing how 881 Secret Service employees had tested positive between March 1, 2020 and March 9, 2021. The data, which came from a Freedom of Information Act request to the Secret Service, found that 477 members of the special agent division had been infected. Described by the Department of Homeland Security as “the elite agents you see protecting the President and Vice President,” special agents are also responsible for a number of safety assignments overseas and in the United States, such as protecting the president and vice president’s families, presidential candidates and visiting foreign leaders.
Andrew Heaney remains an interesting choice for #2 pitcher for the Angels - sometimes a guy with electric stuff that strikes out a ton of batters and sometimes a guy who grooves a pitch that gets hammered hard.
Girardi gets ejected for trying to instigate something with Max Scherzer after getting the pitcher to be checked for sticky substances a third time. On a related note, unlimited checks by the opposing coaches shouldn't be allowed. On another related note, Girardi is not a people person.
So the P12 will now get 1 in the 12-team field....meanwhile, the SEC will be a yearly lock for 3 of the 12, with the Big-10 two...doesn't seem like an exceptionally big change...
I actually looked at this. Just for the years the committee has been choosing the 4-team playoff field, you can go by how they ranked their full Top 25 for an idea of how a 12-team field would have looked. That's from 2014-2020 (7 seasons).
The P12 would have gotten at least two teams in the field in 4 of those seasons. In one of them we would have seen three P12 teams make it (2016: Washington, Colorado, and USC were all in the Top 12.) And honestly, 2020 was such a weirdly abbreviated Pac-12 season that I'd tend to say it doesn't count for this analysis, so mentally I'd peg it at 4 out of 6 times that the conference gets multiple entrants. Does the SEC get more? Yeah they do. But it's not as bad for the Pac-12 as you might think.

Heh, reading about the guy, he sounds like one of the inspirations for the Joe MacMillan character in Halt and Catch Fire.

Bargatze, Attell and Segura are all high on my list to see live still.

Hard disagree. A live, packed comedy show is right up there with a band that rocks the eff out. Poetry in motion!

Madonna and Beastie boys/Run DMC in New York City. I'd be sad to miss out on U2 and the Pogues . .. and the Cure. and Bowie.
Motley Crue because that show would be lit.
The Cure because that would be an interesting crowd.
Probably Bowie or the The Cure. I did eventually see The Cure, but like 15-20 years later. Maybe Maiden instead.
Iron Maiden
Either Bowie or Eddie Murphy
The Cure
Bowie
I'd pick Depeche Mode if it were a few years later (i.e. after Violator was released). And I'd pick the Beastie Boys, but I've already seen them.
Substack issues.
(sigh) You have to refresh in order to see new comments.
Noticed that. Now I have to refresh to see what I posted.
is this permanent new behavior? or a short term thing?
Probably a bug. Hopefully they fix it soon.
Why do you play?
Depends...lately it's either because I want to spend time with my son or to challenge myself. I guess overall it's because playing is fun.
I play to win the game.
homie don't play (oooh I'm so serious and edgy)
