Keeping it local, I guess I like The Paramount as the fancy theater, it is very impressive art deco icon, The Grand Lake is nice, but my fave is The Fox Oakland, great venue to see an act.

on the other hand it is maddening to track down bugs introduced by a random keystroke in a random cell.

speaking of chocolate, my current favorite but "hard to find" thing is the Ritter Sport w/ Corn Flakes. it is a lot like a Nestle Crunch, except better.

10-13 range.

i dont mind things like Hersheys w/ a lot of sugar.

but i also like good dark choc in the 65% range

I love the Orpheum and Golden Gate Theaters for nostalgia purposes. They are both old-school Vaudeville-era theaters. Orpheum has great reliefs that ooze history. I was fascinated by the Golden Gate's box seats, which had people who dressed up fancy, brought opera glasses, and paid large sums to sit in - IMHO - not-so-great seats compared to front-orchetra. I have a love in my heart for those two velvet seated wonders.

Trump talks smack about General Mattis with dubious claims.

We'll see if it ultimately changes anything, but Alaska senator agrees with Mattis.

In a major break with President Trump, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) said Thursday that she is struggling over her support for her fellow Republican and praised former defense secretary Jim Mattis for a statement in which he accused Trump of trying to deliberately divide Americans.

“I thought Gen. Mattis’s words were true and honest and necessary and overdue,” Murkowski told reporters at the Capitol, adding that she had been “struggling” to find the right words to express her feelings about Trump’s presidency.

In his statement published Wednesday by the Atlantic, Mattis took exception to Trump’s threats of military force on American streets and praised those demanding justice following the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.

“When I saw Gen. Mattis’s comments yesterday, I felt like perhaps we’re getting to the point where we can be more honest with the concerns that we might hold internally and have the courage of our own convictions to speak up,” Murkowski said. “And so I’m working as one individual to form the right words, knowing that these words really matter. So I appreciate Gen. Mattis’s comments.”

Asked if she can still support Trump, Murkowski said, “I am struggling with it. I have struggled with it for a long time.”

“He is duly elected our president,” she said. “I will continue to work with him. I will continue to work with this administration.”

“Right now, as we are all struggling with ways to express the words that need to be expressed appropriately,” Murkowski continued. “I think there are important conversations that we need to have as an American people amongst ourselves about where we are right now.”

And now Drew Brees issues a statement saying he "Completely missed the mark" through an apology that sounds like it was written by a PR firm.

"I would like to apologize to my friends, teammates, the City of New Orleans, the black community, NFL community and anyone I hurt with my comments yesterday. In speaking with some of you, it breaks my heart to know the pain I have caused.

In an attempt to talk about respect, unity, and solidarity centered around the American flag and the national anthem, I made comments that were insensitive and completely missed the mark on the issues we are facing right now as a country. They lacked awareness and any type of compassion or empathy. Instead, those words have become divisive and hurtful and have misled people into believing that somehow I am an enemy. This could not be further from the truth, and is not an accurate reflection of my heart or my character.

This is where I stand:

I stand with the black community in the fight against systemic racial injustice and police brutality and support the creation of real policy change that will make a difference.

I condemn the years of oppression that have taken place throughout our black communities and still exists today.

I acknowledge that we as Americans, including myself, have not done enough to fight for that equality or to truly understand the struggles and plight of the black community.

I recognize that I am part of the solution and can be a leader for the black community in this movement.

I will never know what it’s like to be a black man or raise black children in America but I will work every day to put myself in those shoes and fight for what is right.

I have ALWAYS been an ally, never an enemy.

I am sick about the way my comments were perceived yesterday, but I take full responsibility and accountability. I recognize that I should do less talking and more listening...and when the black community is talking about their pain, we all need to listen.

For that, I am very sorry and I ask your forgiveness."

Scootie's avatar

It's a shitty apology because he doesn't walk back the substance of his original comment, which necessitated the apology. Hey Drew, try this:

"I support my teammates' peaceful protests of oppression and mistreatment. I believe in this cause and will do everything I can to help fight systemic racial injustice. I look forward to joining with them in this work. I recognize that there are many ways to protest, and that kneeling before the flag is meaningful and important for them. The flag is a powerful symbol for me personally because of my family's military service, and I don't feel comfortable joining in that particular expression of protest, but I understand and support their decisions to do so."

The movie theater in the Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok is stll the best movie theater I've ever been to - even after like 15 years. Real butter on popcorn, they give you blankets to snuggle under with your friend, should you want.

I saw Onward there in February - the last in-theater experience I've had (rumors are China's theaters are opening soon - but I don't know what they'll show. Tenet & Mulan hopefully, but I think they want to do a global release on that.

The only movie theater around here that I’ve been to and would characterize as “classic” is the Uptown in DC, which was closed before pandemic shutdowns and is the subject of efforts to be reopened by some kind of community group (if I remember correctly). To be honest on the rare occasion that I go to the movies now I’m happy as anything if it’s got reserved seating and a decent sound setup.

I heard the Wurlitzer at the Paramount one Sat night in the mid 90s probably. It was a showing of The King and I and they had AMC's Nick Clooney (back when AMC actually showed old, classic movies) come and give a talk before the movie. There were a lot of old people in the crowd and during the dance scene they all started clapping along. It was pretty cool.
