Outbreaks, Carriers, and Patient Zero: How Language Shapes our Understanding of Pandemic
Lisa Keränen, PhD
Monday July 13, 3:30pm - 4:45pm
The way we talk about pandemic matters. This session explores how people have talked about outbreaks in history and explores the connections between language and thinking. We will analyze outbreak narratives across official, entertainment, and technical contexts.

(Updated at 10:20 a.m.) President Donald Trump’s campaign headquarters in Rosslyn temporarily shut down last week after a campaign official tested positive for coronavirus, Politico reported Friday afternoon.
The campaign was chided by local officials last month after Vice President Mike Pence visited and was photographed with a sea staffers, all without masks. Now comes word that the office was recently deep cleaned due to a positive COVID-19 test and worries about the virus spreading in the open floor plan office.
Was on the Bald Head Island ferry. About 70% compliance to state mandated mask wearing. Most of the non-compliant were lazy types - had masks and either were holding them, had them on chin, or waited until were actually within 6 feet. One family group - led by a blonde lady - was next to me at the dock awaiting to board. None of the daughters were wearing masks as they wandered around the dock getting pics for the 'gram. So the family to up a lot of space and kinda moved about.
Then one dude and his girlfriend squeezed up next to me so they could be first in line to get on the boat. I scooted over because - WTF - we're all getting on the boat.
An older gentleman (late 60s?) on the opposite side of the group from me asked the matriarch to put her mask on and please socially distance. He was completely polite in his request and was of the age where he was at risk.
Naturally, she says:
I AM NOT PUTTING A MASK ON AND YOU CAN MOVE AWAY - YOU CAN MOVE, BUT I AM NOT MOVING AN INCH. THERE IS NO SIGN HERE SAYING YOU NEED TO WEAR A MASK [edit: nevermind that it is a State Order that you need to wear a mask and there are signs on the ramp saying you must wear a mask when waiting for the boat and on the boat).
I guess my wife knows me from more than 2 decades of being with me because I shift slightly forward to stand up to fucking let her have a double barrel of facts - but her arm flies to my forearm and quietly says ".Don't. Don't waste your energy on her."
I'm continuing to see wild variations in behavior, including sometimes by the same place of business, and I'm confident the wild variations in behavior are encouraging further wild variations in behavior, which wild variations in guidance and observed planning do nothing to quell. Minimizing activity, and being both careful and selective about those that you do get involved with (we went on an immediate family picnic in a remote spot in the mountains yesterday, with literally no one within miles, and I was comfortable without the masks there) is going to be the way things need to be for at least the next several months.
My son went on an epic rant against his own generation last night, basically saying millennials think they're better, more socially aware than previous generations, but in reality, they're just as selfish, and couldn't take the pandemic seriously.
I agree with the students on just about all the points. I don't see any way the university can keep students apart. They'll just find a place off campus to congregate. Vandy, for example, is only allowing students that live in a building to enter the building. Usually just about all students live on campus, either in the dorms or in the greek system. This semester they said they'll approve more off campus living but I think it'll still be pretty low compared to most colleges.
"HOUSTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Sunday criticized a privately built border wall in South Texas that’s showing signs of erosion months after going up, saying it was “only done to make me look bad,” even though the wall was built after a months-long campaign by his supporters.
The group that raised money online for the wall promoted itself as supporting Trump during a government shutdown that started in December 2018 because Congress wouldn’t fund Trump’s demands for a border wall. Called “We Build the Wall,” the group has raised more than $25 million promoting itself as supporting the president."
This is a really interesting thread about how a lot of the market gains for stocks is due to tech giants which get a lot of revenue from overseas markets- all of which are in better shape than the US because they managed the ‘rona better.
One of their primary colors is burgundy. They've got the perfect name staring them right in the face: the Washington Burgundys. Informally, people will call them the Ron Burgundys! 😂😂😂
By the way, the Washington Warriorettes was going to be Legends Football League team name of a relocated team (Baltimore Charms), but they never played a game. LFL, formerly Lingerie Football League, has also apparently rebranded to the X League.
DC United was supposed to play Toronto yesterday and it got postponed amid widespread confusion over possibly positive tests, then rescheduled for today.
I started on it because a couple of the eagles nest cams are near my sisters house. I never made it to Katmai when I lived in Alaska but like looking at the cams. Also been following the condor nest recently.
Last month I got a coronavirus hair cut (No. 1 buzz cut) and discovered I have a bunch of gray hairs, especially on the back of my head. I left them in. Life comes at you fast!

I'm signing up for this and just realized that they're already halfway through the material and I've already missed so many cool-sounding sessions =(
Oh wait they're all going to be archived on YouTube yayyy
Yup, I think most of the other ones are already up!
I found this really interesting and informative, both about Ramadan around the world and specifically Ramadan during a pandemic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0m2W5xswlMI
Yes, I fell into the Buzzfeed rabbit hole over the weekend.

I'm guessing you can't use the same thing that SBN did. Probably have to find an emoji list website and copy and paste?
If you're on a Mac, ctrl-cmd-space will pop up the emoji list for you.
You are a fount of information!

I think it would have been a valuable waste of energy on her.
This is why I’m okay with the family sticking close to home this summer for the most part.

All generations are like that.

We have managed to make over 3 millions love connections between Americans and the coronavirus so why stop now.
We'll be back with more lies in "2 and 2..."
Some academics tried something radical and asked college students what they thought of re-opening plans and how plausible they were:

NBA Bubble: Russell Westbrook has tested positive for the 'rona. He's not in the bubble, will join once he's all better.
Guess the new name before it’s announced!
Washington Pigskins.
Washington Silver Dollars
In honor of the myth that George Washington threw a dollar across the Potomac.
Or that Capitol Hill runs on dollars.
Or that Washington, DC needs dollars to run its operations under federal control.
Or that lobbyist dollars are a thing.
Or that federal budgets are made up of billions of dollars.
Or that our federal tax dollars go to Washington, DC.
The Washingon Red Dollars, in honor of deficit spending.
Could also call them the Red Bucks.
The time has come for the NFL to throw a team name out there that doesn't end in S (i.e. Red Sox, Jazz, etc.)...Washinton Crossing? Washington Column?
Washingon Reds. Be a color. Doesn’t make much sense, but I seem to recall it’s been done before.
One of their primary colors is burgundy. They've got the perfect name staring them right in the face: the Washington Burgundys. Informally, people will call them the Ron Burgundys! 😂😂😂
Are you saying we are commies?
The Washingon Red Pills. Be real. Know the truth.
Appropriate for a city where lots of people have their snouts in the trough
The more serious rumors on the Interweb points toward the new name being the Washington Warriors.
the dub dubs
Red Tails is still sitting right there.
This seems like such an easy win for them that I'm almost certain they won't do it.
won't someone think about the hawks?
By the way, the Washington Warriorettes was going to be Legends Football League team name of a relocated team (Baltimore Charms), but they never played a game. LFL, formerly Lingerie Football League, has also apparently rebranded to the X League.
Warhawks
My high school nickname and mascot is the Warhawks. Anyone want to guess who it was named after
I've also heard Red Wolves. There is some precedence there, and possibly also copyright issues, with Arkansas State.
That would be boring and generic. They should capture the local color with something like the Washington Monuments or the Washington Swamp Things.
The Washington Half Smokes
DC Epithets announcing new mascot today
I think they're announcing that they are really changing their name.
The Washington Waffles
DC United was supposed to play Toronto yesterday and it got postponed amid widespread confusion over possibly positive tests, then rescheduled for today.
Too bad the rest of us can’t get tested that fast
Everton somehow contrived to lose to Watford 3 - 0 yesterday and I’ve rarely felt better about skipping a game

Go Bears!
Here are the real bears.

we were in Alaska a couple years ago. it was amazing. there are no words to describe the vastness of the place.
it would have been pretty expensive to do a float plane to a place where there was such excellent bear viewing.
we did some bears close up at a "wildlife sanctuary of injured wildlife"
https://www.alaskawildlife.org/
WHoley Crap! that's wonderful!
These are the same bears who compete in the Fat Bear Contest in the autumn.
One of my favorite contest everyone wins, well everyone except the salmon.
There are some cool live streams on that site.

Life comes at you fast!
i haven't cut my hair since the beginning of march...i'm tempted to get a corona hair cut now that it's super hot outside...
I went ahead and drove out to a county where barbershops were open just to get one. Worth it.
(It was all by appointment only, just two people in the shop, kept a mask on except when he was cutting around the ears. Seems pretty safe to me.)
Go for it!
I got my first one while in college, got a bunch more in grad school, and they continue to spread slowly.
If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
I've got a few, mostly around the sideburns area. Though that may be because those are the easiest for me to see in the mirror.
I found one gray hair when I was 34. Over the years I have added a some more and now my beard is starting to get gray. Oh, the passage of time!
