From dream job to nightmare

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/07/16/redskins-sexual-harassment-larry-michael-alex-santos/?arc404=true

A few months after Emily Applegate started working for the Washington Redskins in 2014, she settled into a daily routine: She would meet a female co-worker in the bathroom during their lunch breaks, she said, to commiserate and cry about the frequent sexual harassment and verbal abuse they endured.

They cried about the former chief operating officer’s expletive-laced tirades, Applegate said, when she recalled him calling her “f-----g stupid” and then requesting she wear a tight dress for a meeting with clients, “so the men in the room have something to look at.” They cried about a wealthy suiteholder who grabbed her friend’s backside during a game, Applegate said, and the indifference the team’s top sales executive displayed when she complained.

"When Paul Kay, then an anthropology graduate student at Harvard University, arrived in Tahiti in 1959 to study island life, he expected to have a hard time learning the local words for colors. His field had long espoused a theory called linguistic relativity, which held that language shapes perception. Color was the “parade example,” Kay says. His professors and textbooks taught that people could only recognize a color as categorically distinct from others if they had a word for it. If you knew only three color words, a rainbow would have only three stripes. Blue wouldn’t stand out as blue if you couldn’t name it.

What’s more, according to the relativist view, color categories were arbitrary. The spectrum of color has no intrinsic organization. Scientists had no reason to suspect that cultures divvied it up in similar ways. To an English speaker like Kay, the category “red” might include shades ranging from deep wine to light ruby. But to Tahitians, maybe “red” also included shades that Kay would call “orange” or “purple.” Or maybe Tahitians chunked colors not by a combination of hue, lightness and saturation, as Americans do, but by material qualities, like texture or sheen. "

I found this, as someone who devoted my career to a precise understanding of color, absolutely fascinating.

Yeah, color is weird. Thinking about it as a physicist, while each color may correspond to a specific frequency, the way they are observed by the human eyes depends on (more or less) the overlay of three different spectra - each is the perception of a color intensity that span a range of frequencies.

Now that I have typed this out, I am not so sure if this makes that much sense to anyone else.

Expand full comment
Rocksanddirt's avatar

color perception is very different from single wavelength color. not only the blending of the different spectra that your eye sees, but also the texture/reflectiveness/etc make a difference also.

I think most of the private schools, whether they're doing it on purpose or not, are getting the students on campus so they can force them to pay tuition without any refunds, and then they'll send them home after a few weeks. Vandy has already stated that tuition and other fees are not refundable if they send students home for remote study but housing and dining costs will be prorated.

I think they know if from the beginning that if they say all classes are remote from the start, that students will opt out for a year or two. Which at places like Vandy will cause a problem because most students are on campus all 4 years. As students take a year off then they'll have to house the usual 4 years of students + the ones that opt out.

crossed the northern border three days ago to see my wife for the first time since march. we have a 14 day quarantine period, and then we can do the things. but we are painting our house, and it will take all of the 4 weeks this year plus probably another 4 weeks next year. yes, we have Cal colors on the house, but it wasn't even by design. she just did it. amazing.

also this is what a functioning society looks like. we are located on a corner in a little rural town. across one corner is the grocery store, and across the other is the local food joint. everyone wears masks and follows the current rules, not because following rules is good, but because it is simply what reasonable humans do to protect their families and even complete strangers during these trying times. i look forward to leaving that shithole dumpstre fire of a country known as amerikkka behind for good in a few years.

The ol' "iF yOu DoN't LiKe It HeRe ThEn LeAve." Haha, ok dude. It's not that simple, and everyone knows it.

I was born in the midwest, live in the west, and my folks are in their 80s and just a few miles from Berkeley. I am working on getting the fuck out, and I have a plan. I intend to move to Canada within a few years, but because the Soros One World government has yet to be implemented, I must abide by current laws to get there. A process.

But on to the dumpster fire that is amerikkka. It's been decades in the making, and one has to do some rather creative thinking to spin it any other way. The current administration is only a symptom. For a few decades the world has kind of been looking at us out of the corner of their eyes and wondering what the hell is wrong with us. Now we are all being exposed for what we are; uneducated, unhealthy, misguided, bigoted, bible-banging idiots riding the coat tails of our ancestors from 70 years ago. (Idiot really is the correct word too, check it out.) amerikkkan exceptionalism is the idea that big gubbermint is bad but a massive, outdated military is good, science is cancelled and god is great, pick yourself up by your bootstraps that were made in a foreign country and are intentionally perforated at the heel so they tear right off, and my favorite one that regulations are bad for us, and yet we need law and order. Now imagine thinking we can vote our way out of this with our failed governmental system and a two party system. Hahahaha.

Of course Canada is not perfect. For starters it's waaay to close to amerikkka.
