According to the 2020 Census, after Hawaii and Alaska, which state has the highest percentage of Native Pacific Islanders?

Could be Utah, maybe

Uso Cugel nails it.

Yeah, I went back on forth on this and went with Nevada only because I’ve heard native Hawaiians refer to Las Vegas as the 8th island.

According to the 2020 Census, which was the only state to shrink in terms of number of households?

California?

West Virginia?

This one is really tough. I'm guessing the state has to be a place with relatively few immigrants, collapsing industries driving outward migration, and poor health outcomes. WV has all three.

Expand full comment

But states with fewer immigrants may be places where they accept refugees. I'm always surprised to find communities of languages I've never heard of in the middle of nowhere in the US

No, actually I haven't seen any of it. Dearborn is right by Detroit, isn't it? They have a large Middle Eastern population there?

Yeah - there were some right wing fears about sharia law starting there . . .well for the last 15 years.

Yeah large Arab American population in Dearborn, something like close to 40% of its population. BUT, I was thinking of a smaller town named Hamtramck, MI, of which I saw the special some while ago.. https://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/2016/02/05/february-5-2016-muslims-of-hamtramck-michigan/28948/

The Boise area is another similar to Salt Lake City, where you have a good sized community, providing a lot of infrastructure and such, but also a perimeter that has plenty of room to grow. And limited rainfall.

This goes to my theory that Idaho will flip Blue before Texas. Smaller population so a decent influx of Californians and Washingtonians moving their to work remote or just wanting to live their in general means it won’t take many to tip it Blue.

Expand full comment

could be... I thought Texas was a lot closer to flipping because all the growth here is in minority populations that historically vote blue. But a lot of the Latino vote listened to Trump's rhetoric and voted red last time around. Instead of the traditional 75-85% blue vote in the RG Valley, it was 57-60%, a pretty flabbergasting situation. Combined with the historically suppressed minority vote here and it may take a little longer than I thought

That Latino vote and poor showing in the RGV was both surprising and concerning. Hopefully it is an anomaly and the Dems can get back to winning that vote by 75-85%

I generally don't post political type of stuff on here but I feel that Afghanistan is just a major shitshow, nothing to gain and certainly a lot to lose. I saw someone on twitter say we poured out billions of dollars, tons of soldiers and civilians, and countless resources all for the country to fall in a week. I mean people reference the fall of Troy but man this was bad. Also while in principle I agree with helping refugees and trying to get them out, I see people on social media trying for donations to them while they are in Afghanistan where I'm just sitting there like you know damn well that money will not see the light of day over there.

Texas school district makes masks part of dress code to get around Gov. Abbott's order

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/texas-school-district-makes-masks-part-dress-code-get-around-n1277040

A small Texas school district has made facial coverings part of its dress code, in a bid to get around Gov. Greg Abbott's executive order banning mask mandates.

The board of the Paris Independent School District, which has about 4,000 students, said in a statement Tuesday that the governor's order does not usurp its ability to manage schools.

"The Board believes the dress code can be used to mitigate communicable health issues, and therefore has amended the PISD dress code to protect our students and employees," the district said.

The measure — which read "For health reasons, masks are required for all employees and students to mitigate flu, cold, pandemic, and any other communicable diseases" — will be revisited at every monthly trustee meeting and could be changed later, The Paris News newspaper reported.

It's a good idea for Alabama, Ohio State, Miami...the blue bloods of college football, who now don't have to secretly funnel $$$ to 5* kids through boosters...they can just put them on the payroll.

I am of the opinion that NIL won't change much - the programs that have power and money will continue to - and those that do not will continue to not. Jack Morris, the Detroit Tigers Hall of Fame pitcher-turned-TV analyst for Tigers games, was suspended indefinitely Wednesday by Bally Sports Detroit after using an accent often used to mock Asian people as Shohei Ohtani came to bat in Tuesday night’s game.

Matt Shepard, the play-by-play announcer on the telecast, asked Morris what strategy should be used for pitchers facing Ohtani, a pitching and hitting superstar from Japan who leads MLB with 39 home runs, as he came to bat in the sixth inning of the game against the Los Angeles Angels.

“Be very, very careful,” Morris replied, using pronunciations that many found offensive. In the ninth inning, Morris said on the telecast that he had not intended any offense.

Game #120: A’s loss overshadowed by Bassitt injury

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2021/8/17/22630190/oakland-as-game-120-chicago-white-sox-score-result

The Oakland A’s lost their game on Tuesday, but that’s a distant secondary consideration after the health of one of their players.

A’s starter Chris Bassitt was hit in the head by a line drive in the 2nd inning and had to go to the hospital. Oakland went on to lose 9-0 to the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.

There’s not much more to say. Chicago led off the bottom of the 2nd with a pair of singles, and then the next batter drilled a 100 mph liner that went straight back toward the mound and hit Bassitt on the right side of his face. He went down to the ground for a few minutes, then was helped up by the trainers into a cart and driven away for medical care.

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2021/8/17/22630208/san-francisco-giants-mets-recap-logan-webb-tommy-la-stella

For a while it looked like it would be a funny game. It looked like the San Francisco Giants hitters were going to record 27 outs without a run in between them and still cruise to nine-inning victory over the New York Mets.

That’s a rare thing to have happen.

It’s rare because it requires three rare things to happen, two of which are rarer when added together, like a unicorn that speaks seven languages.

The first thing that needs to happen is you need to score runs before recording an out.

The Giants did that. The did it by having LaMonte Wade Jr. lead off the first inning with a single, and for Tommy La Stella to follow it with a towering home run to right-center field.

https://www.truebluela.com/2021/8/17/22628463/matt-beaty-david-price-gavin-lux-dodgers-recap-pirates

Matt Beaty took advantage of only his second start of August with two hits, including the tie-breaking two-run double helped the Dodgers to yet another win over the Pirates. The 4-3 win for Los Angeles is their 15th straight over Pittsburgh.

Despite intermittent playing time, Beaty has navigated his way to hitting .267/.365/.383 with a 112 wRC+ on the season. His two-out, two-run double off Cody Pence broke a 2-2 tie, and gave Beaty six hits in his last 10 at-bats.

On the season, Beaty has more starts in the outfield (27) than at first base (16), where he started on Tuesday. But since the July 22 arrival of Billy McKinney — who manager Dave Roberts said is “a couple of grades better than anyone else we could put out there” in the outfield — five of Beaty’s seven starts have come at first base.
