Today, the temperature is low, the wind is not blowing, the humidity is actually higher than the temperature (never mind above the teens!), and there is actual locally observable evidence that the sun still exists. None of this has been the case since Monday afternoon.

Philosophy

I admit that I have never read anything on philosophy. I am sure it would be good if I did, but it's all so intangible that I haven't prioritized it. For those DBDers who have read/studied philosophy, what's your impression on how it helped your thinking?

there are multiple approaches to philosophy and the eastern and western approaches are very different. i think that everyone has had some exposure to it, even if you havent formally studied it.

western philosophy is mostly concerned with truth and how to discover it. that is why a good fraction of it is about reasoning and logic and there is a ton of debate about if God or free will truly exists and how and why that might be the case. it is not surprising that early scientists were philosophers and to this day you get a doctorate of philosophy for intense scientific study in one field, even if that field is history or English.

eastern philosophy on the other hand was historically concerned with how to construct harmonious societies and relationships. while it also looks for underlying truths, most of the underlying truths are concerned with human nature. as much as western philosophy intersects with religion, eastern is practically intertwined with it in a completely inseparable way, not that it is a bad thing.

in the current age, western philosophy has intersected more with economics and political systems, ie socialism vs capitalism, existentialism, realism etc. eastern philosophy has gone down the route of yoga and mindfulness that has been quite well marketed as a cure to living in the fast paced modern world.

personally what i get out of it are the answers to the "why" questions. if you think of the kid who keeps asking why, eventually you tell your kid to go away, or you dont know the answer, or you keep digging deeper until you have to question "why we know anything at all"

in the end, i end up with a very streamlined decision making process. while i am not saying i am necessarily right all the time (most of the time i am), i just dont have many doubts about the decision making process and very few regrets.

i think that others may have similar processes and attribute them to things not called philosophy, but if you read some you might find that the roots of your thoughts and teachings might have historical connections.

there are lots of ways to get started. it is usually best to start w/ something that you might have some cultural roots to. for instance, for me, most of Hindu mythology is an allegory for some of the deeper philosophical stuff. growing up i just read cartoon versions of the myths until i started to develop an interest.

I studied some philosophy at Cal, Phil 18 (Ancient Philosophy, specifically Plato's works), later the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, which I would recommend to anyone with a nascent interest in Stoicism, which is a useful way of thinking in 2020, with everything going haywire.

'Dutch hackers were shocked when they entered Trump's Twitter account'

https://nos.nl/artikel/2347694-nederlandse-hackers-schrokken-toen-ze-trumps-twitteraccount-binnendrongen.html

Edwin, Mattijs and Victor said they did not mean any harm when they hacked Donald Trump's Twitter account in 2016. The Dutch hackers did not even think it would work, says Vrij Nederland journalist Gerard Janssen in the NOS on 3 Tech Podcast .

Janssen interviewed the three about their deed. Vrij Nederland today published a timeline of the hack and aftermath. The three hackers have provided screenshots that seem to support their story.

"These aren't people who tell a story for fun. I've seen the email exchanges and how they work," says Janssen. "And they are very highly regarded in the hacker community."

Alex Morgan to sign with Tottenham WSL

Lots of USWNT/NWSL players are playing in Europe (particularly England) this year. One of the beneficial effects is other younger players getting the opportunity in NWSL. For example, Cal alum and Thai World Cup Player Miranda Nild got promoted from practice squad to roster player for the NWSL OL Reign.

But unlike Alex Morgan's first adventure playing oversea where she did technically get a Women's Champions League title, I don't think Tottenham will be that competitive as a team. Morgan making her decision late (due to her taking the summer off after giving birth) probably limited her opportunities.

I’m guessing those willing to go to an NFL game during a pandemic probably have the following in common:

MAGA supporters

Anti-maskers

Back the Blue

Dislike and don’t support BLM

Sip ‘Cism with their Bid Lights

So it really isn’t surprising they would boo. Seeing how Missouri is MAGA country, I’m sure a lot of MAGA “I’m not watching the NFL this season” were actually watching last nights game and whispering “All Lives Matter” each time someone scored a touchdown.

Oakland A’s Game #42: A’s 2-hit Astros in 3-1 victory, extend AL West lead

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2020/9/10/21431444/oakland-as-game-42-houston-astros-score-result

The AL West isn’t mathematically decided yet, but the Oakland A’s have shown who the class of the division is.

The A’s breezed past the Houston Astros on Thursday, allowing just two hits in a 3-1 victory that took barely over two hours to complete. Sean Manaea didn’t allow a baserunner until the 6th inning, and Matt Olson took care of the offense with a two-run homer

Giants granted a rude reality check by Padres

I’ve gotten used to the San Francisco Giants winning. I’m guessing you have, too.

The Giants entered Thursday night’s game having won 15 of their last 20 games, a staggering rate for an entire third of this pandemic-shortened, wacky, wild, stupid, mesmerizing, ridiculous excuse for a season.

Having 15 wins in 20 games is a helluva stretch, no matter who you are.

Dodgers offense sloppy as they fall to D-Backs

https://www.truebluela.com/2020/9/10/21431887/los-angeles-dodgers-recap-dbacks-mookie-betts-corey-seager-aj-pollock

The Dodgers blew countless opportunities to score runs in the game, as they fell to the D-Backs 5-2.

Don’t let the two runs fool you, as the offense was all but quiet. They were able to reach base, but couldn’t do anything about it. Both of LA’s runs came courtesy of solo home runs from Corey Seager and A.J. Pollock, who went back-to-back in the third inning. That was it. On the night, the Dodgers were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 runners on base.

Their first squandered opportunity came in the second inning. After two singles, the Dodgers had runners on first and second with two outs. Austin Barnes stepped to the plate but flew out, ending the inning.
