So, I get an occasional email blast on redfin because I have an account there, and my old house, which I sold like 5 and a half years ago, is back on the market. It's a weird feeling looking at your former place of residence, and it's especially strange because they've done a ton of renovations, but also still kept a bunch of the renovations I did, so there's this mix of the recognizable and the new. It's like they finished the job I was doing, but in a somewhat different way than I would have done. I suspect they must have put at least a hundred grand into it, if not more. Of course they're selling it for SEVERAL hundred grand more than they paid me. Looks nice, though!

This housing market is ridiculous right now. I thought Covid would cool the market here in San Diego but it has done the exact opposite.

MD is booming as well too. Recent tax increases in the Baltimore area have helped make a run on housing in adjacent counties. Houses in my area are getting bombarded with offers as soon as they hit the market. I'm glad I bought back in 2016.

And, of course, the area around DC is always strong.

There's also an element of people looking for more space now that they're all confined to quarters together. I'm genuinely surprised that there's a vacant lot a couple of streets over - the old house was knocked down but nobody has started on a new one yet.

Both the virus and the urban renewal fires have underscored the folly of packing maximum number of people in as close as possible.

I think an intervening variable there might be “America!”

Yeah, I wish I had bought in 2016, that was the sweet spot for still buying an affordable home in San Diego. I’m just going to wait it out while I save more money and pay down debt. My rent is super cheap so I can afford to have some patience.

I look at my old house (which I sold in 2010, divorce) on Zillow and it is worth 2,5x what I paid for it in 2000.

The house I'm talking about (which I sold in 2015... prior to divorce), is listed for literally 2.4x what I paid for it in 2009.

We had put in grass and sprinklers in our small front yard (maybe 15x15) and the backyard. We drove by a couple of years after we sold and moved and they had put concrete in the front yard and put in a wrought iron fence around the front yard. Why take out the grass? I haven't looked at what the inside now looks like.

About 5 years later I think it was sold by the bank for at least 150K below what they paid for it. If I remember they paid about 75K over asking. And I think there was one other offer that was 5K more than their offer.

Expand full comment

I take it back. It looks like it was sold for about 200K below what we sold it for 6 years after we sold it. We sold it for 475K, it was sold for 280K, and is now estimated to be 800K. I know when we sold it it was move-in ready and in good condition. The wiring and plumbing was all updated. Buying the house for 280 in 2010 was an amazing deal. Assuming the house wasn't in poor condition by then.

They're not the only ones who sold at a loss. The WaPo has a local section every Thursday that includes real estate transactions. Last week I saw Marvin Bush (one of George's brothers) bought a condo for $1.5 million. I knew he was trying to sell a unit in the same building so looked up the records. Earlier this year he sold the first condo for $3.2 million. $600,00 less than he paid years ago.

I think it was the bank taking the house over if I remember. Although we did sell at just about the right time, I don't think it would've gone down that low.

Camelids (eg, camels, alpacas, llamas) do not have top incisors, which makes them look like they have an underbite. They use their upper lips to shear off food against their lower incisors. But they have 4 (alpaca, llama) and 6 (camel) upper canines, so they can deliver some nasty bites. Thank you for subscribing to Zoonews.

Nov 22, 1986.

Cal has lost 8 in a row, the first being a resounding home loss to historical doormat San Jose State. Joe Kapp has been canned but is riding out the rest of the season. Cal has to play #16 Gator-Bowl bound 'furd. Cal is using its third QB on the season, while the Weenies have John Paye, Brad Muster, Toi Cook, Ed McCaffrey, and Thomas Henley on offense.

I thought for a second the creator was a Cal grad. A Cal grad, Jay Ward, created Peabody and Sherman, Dudley Do Right, the characters Boris and Natasha, Rocky and Bullwinkle, etc. contemporary with Underdog.

Expand full comment

From Wiki re: Rocky and Bullwinkle: The idea for the series came from Jay Ward and Alex Anderson, who previously collaborated on Crusader Rabbit, based upon the original property The Frostbite Falls Revue.[17] This original show never got beyond the proposal stage. It featured a group of forest animals running a television station. The group included Rocket J. Squirrel (Rocky), Oski Bear, Canadian Moose (Bullwinkle), Sylvester Fox, Blackstone Crow, and Floral Fauna. The show in this form was created by Alex Anderson.[18] Bullwinkle's name came from the name of a car dealership in Berkeley, California, called Bullwinkel Motors. Anderson changed the order of the last two letters of the name and gave the name to his moose.[19]

Melvin is starting Luzardo in game 1 even though he a leftie and the Sox' lineup is composed almost entirely of right-handed power hitters. In fact, they are 14-0 against lefties. Bassitt (rightie) tomorrow and Manaea on Thursday, another leftie.

We'll see. I wonder how many positive tests will need to result before games or the season are cancelled. Houston has yet to play a game. Their first 3 games have been cancelled and I think they have a bye week this weekend.

Titans just had players and staff test positive so they and the Vikings are closing their facility. Don't see how they can play this coming weekend.

Notre Dame is having a huge outbreak right now. I guess Touchdown Jesus is no much for GOP stupidity in Indiana. ND has a bye this week so they won’t have to postpone a second game in a row. They next play FSU on October 10th. FSU has been devastated by bad football and poor recruiting, which like Covid, has no none immediate cure.
