For the group attending the game, I sent a note out yesterday with the link to the tickets, which ones to download and a few other basic bits of info. As SGB says, its going to be ugly hot so hydrate, hat it up and bring a cool towel or mini fan of some kind
we land at 5, and by the time we deplane, get our rental, and make the 28mi voyage from airport to airbnb in friday night traffic, I'd say dinner somewhere around 7-7:30
Pups & I arrive in the Bronco from Ft. Stockton mid-afternoon Fri. Plan is to check into AirBnB, which is located a mile from Amon Carter Stadium, right next to the Mellow Mushroom. I may try & get Newellbany & another buddy at 5 @ DFW, or they may Lyft-it, depending on traffic.
I just checked the forecast on google and it looks like 95 degrees at kickoff with a humidity at 34%. Of course, the field will probably be hotter. Need those fog machines.
FS, I had the KGO feed on throughout the game. I was surprised Starkey did pretty well, for Starkey. My vocalizing a cynical reaction to myself was less than normal. Maybe it was feeling "grateful" for this season which mitigated my sarcasm.
i have many cameras, film, digital, pinhole, etc. it is a fun pastime.
i particularly love black and white film photography, esp landscapes. i have taken a handful of decent ones over the years and hundreds of crappy ones to go with it.
i had not taken a photography class until a few years ago. it was REALLY satisfying to work in the dark room and have all this manual control in getting your photo to come to life.
i knew that photography was an art but i didnt truly appreciate it until i got into the darkroom.
I follow a lot of photographers on Instagram and am entertained when they post excitedly about how "I scored this old school 35mm film camera" and I own the same one, because I never got round to throwing various old cameras out.
Watched 3 movies yesterday w/ fam whilst in 106 degree Phoenix en route to Ft. Worth w/ the dogs for the game.
1. Bloodshot - (Vin Diesel) - some writer that loved RoboCop & the Matrix woke up & decided to combine various snippets from each... (4.5 out of 10)
2. The Marksman - (Liam Neeson) - silly flick where a grieving southern AZ widower rancher down on his luck reluctantly tries to help a pre-teen boy that a major Mexican cartel is after. (5 out of 10).
3. The Vault (goofy looking kid from The Good Doctor & Sir Davos fr: GoT) - Interesting caper thriller set in 2010 in Seville, w/ the Spanish MNT’s World Cup run as a backdrop. (6.5 out of 10).
All in all, suspect selections for the holiday, as Sun night’s film was way better....the underrated Denzel feature American Gangster. A great role for him....(9 out of 10).
The Oakland A’s have dropped to third place in the AL West division.
The A’s lost 8-0 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, and were swept in the three-game series at Rogers Centre. Oakland’s offense managed just two hits.
Today’s game got out of hand quickly, and there was no dramatic comeback at the end like Friday and Saturday. Toronto jumped all over starter Cole Irvin, with a three-run rally in the 2nd and then four more runs in the 3rd on a pair of homers.
The Giants really didn't hit well, except for Buehler over the weekend. If I remember the Friday game run, until extras, was on an error. On Sat they didn't do much against Urías and the bullpen. Had some hits. On Sunday all their runs were against Buehler. They had some opportunities against Price and the bullpen but couldn't get the hit with RISP.
Of course, neither did the Dodgers. Both bullpens were very solid for the most part. Will be interesting to see how the season ends.
The Giants' first run on Friday came on a single with the bases loaded. Unfortunately, despite having the bases loaded and only one out after that, the Giants did not score again until extra innings.
Yeah Buehler had a bad outing. My kids were watching the ESPN feed and they were horrible. A-Rod was saying that it was good that he shit the bed. Have one bad outing before finishing up the season. Unfortunately it may also mean he gets passed up by Scherzer in the Cy Young race.
Just when you thought Max Scherzer couldn’t get any better, he showed that it was somehow possible. In his best game as a Dodger, Scherzer allowed zero runs (one unearned) in eight innings in LA’s 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
He was pretty much untouchable all afternoon, as the Cardinals never really had any chance at the plate. Scherzer struck out 13, his high while with the Dodgers. Overall for the game, he had 25 swing-and-misses. If you want to make it look even more impressive, Scherzer didn’t even issue a walk.
“When [the offense goes] out there and they’re sleepwalking and give you four runs, thats a huge boost for me,” he said following the game. “That allowed me to be aggressive at their lineup.”
Mrs Slug loves olives. She probably rates them as 15 or 16 out of 19, maybe a touch higher.
I'm rather meh about olives.
Fun fact - one of my great-grandmothers was named Olive. If one of our two kids had been a girl, that child would have been named Olivia Alice Grace because Mrs Slug really likes the name Olivia. My great-aunt knew this and asked if she could consider such child as a namesake for her mother. We told her, of course. There was no harm in it and besides, this great-aunt was someone we both loved.
0. I've tried everything from the typical black olives on pizza to all kinds of fancy olives stuffed with savory goodness. I simply cannot abide the taste of olives.
Poor UConn. They're an FBS program, but lost to Fresno State 45-0, then lost again at home over the weekend to FCS Holy Cross 38-28. Their coach announced his retirement on Sunday and then was forced to step down immediately by the AD. Lou Spanos is now the interim coach.
Washington WR Ja'Lynn Polk suffered a chest injury and had emergency surgery after the game. He's out for the rest of the regular season. The Huskies' top 4 receivers are either out or questionable vs. Michigan.
I watched the game again yesterday. The 4-2-5 defense that Nevada plays is patient, then brutal. It is soft against the run and short passes underneath, but it is really really difficult to crack for any medium-to-long passes. This defense invites you to string together a long series of successful plays to march down the field - but as soon as you have one of the d-lineman succeed, or get an offensive penalty, or somehow stumble - you're put in a really difficult situation. Cal repeatedly made those mistakes - leading to long-yardage situations. Garbers couldn't penetrate the five DB umbrella, so we took the underneath passes hoping for some YAC - which didn't come. Why not continue to run it as it was working for the first two series? It's not like Nevada didn't adjust. They started flexing their 2 LB or safeties forward, putting 7-8 defense in the box - which you can't run against. People who say we should have continued to run forget that we DID try to run on 1st down and it didn't go so well, which meant long-yardage situations. Okay, so you then the answer is play-action... which we tried several times, but the execution was bad. Nevada DC did a nice job against us. Their scheme worked well and I'm less sanguine about a victory on Saturday against TCU, which also runs a 4-2-5.
It is kind of weird to me that we would execute poorly on play-action, since for a run-heavy scheme you would expect that to be the next counter to defensive adjustments.

To my surprise I wake up the next morning to find out Chase Garbers "liked" the comment.
Now this can only go one of two ways: 1. I helped light a fire in him to prove people like me wrong and he will have the receipt of that comment in order to shed light on doubters down the line, subsequently meaning he would've rebounded from the last start. The second way (and I fear this has more than a punchers chance of being right) is that he liked my comment to agree with my idea in its plainness: in that he wants to graduate and get out of here (could be because of Musgrave if this theory holds and this is a subtle way to show he's not liking what is happening). This way would lead to a collapse and a major shakeup in my opinion.
The only player I routinely criticized for his erratic play was Davis Webb, and it was very benign. I would simply tweet out "Wavis Debb" every time he threw a pick or short armed (arm punted) a ball
Olives 6/19. They're ok mixed in with other things, for example as a pizza topping, but not good by themselves.
15 on the black olive scale. Highly underrated.

I'd love to join up, if that's all right with everyone. What time?

Never been there.
While it's still a ways off, weather forecast for DFW is a high of 99 degrees but the humidity is not so bad.

*not so bad for Texas. Probably bad for Californians.
this is actually the hottest it has been all year unfortunately. Milder than usual summer but of course shit got dicey for this weekend.
FS, I had the KGO feed on throughout the game. I was surprised Starkey did pretty well, for Starkey. My vocalizing a cynical reaction to myself was less than normal. Maybe it was feeling "grateful" for this season which mitigated my sarcasm.
I believe I'm still shaking off the lingering effects of that cold.

Kind of in free fall mode. I hope they snap out of it.
Giants destroy the Rockies, a lot to a little.
Really good 4 game stretch over the weekend for the Giants.

Can the Nats have Scherzer back? Still wouldn't be going to the playoffs but I miss being able to see all of his starts.
No thank you. I wonder if the Dodgers would offer him 3/120? He can have Bauer's money.
Ugh, it looks like Josiah Gray hasn't been too good. I guess really it was just his last 2 starts. Ruiz also struggling.
Olives
i generally like all olives but the black ones are about 14 for me. i cant eat an unlimited quantity of them. good in small doses
I like good olives, black olives are not good. I guess they're ok on so-so pizza.

Seeing a push on tickets to that big upcoming home game against Sacramento St.
I watched the game again yesterday. The 4-2-5 defense that Nevada plays is patient, then brutal. It is soft against the run and short passes underneath, but it is really really difficult to crack for any medium-to-long passes. It is kind of weird to me that we would execute poorly on play-action, since for a run-heavy scheme you would expect that to be the next counter to defensive adjustments.
I appreciate the insight. If I'm feeling masochistic I'll watch it one evening this week.
I might watch the first two drives.
have to hope that Nevada is one of the best offenses we'll see this year and that we'll eke out a 6-3 win on Saturday
*big news*
(at least to me)
As a teenager I think I have a bigger social media presence than most on this board. One of the cal football fan pages posted on instagram the final score and like many other comments crapping on the team, players and coaches alike, I decided to have my go. My message was simple and compared to the one here, on the post on instagram I wrote plain and simply "Can't wait for Garbers and Daltoso to graduate".
Cal football official Instagram page did not post the final score probably because they knew the comments section will be filled with hatred.
I think you're reading too much into it.
Disagree.
Yeah I never ever ever criticize college athletes on social, especially ones that play for Cal.
I think you're reaching with your theories.
The only player I routinely criticized for his erratic play was Davis Webb, and it was very benign. I would simply tweet out "Wavis Debb" every time he threw a pick or short armed (arm punted) a ball
How could you not criticize Garbers if you criticized Webb?
"Gase Charbers" just doesn' t have the panache of "Wavis Debb".
