Play calling and execution of plays is not good. Execution is perfected by repeating each play over and over in practice. Play calling is perfected by an OC who has good play calling experience. NOT an OL coach!
From the SI - Louisville Cardinals site here are the ACC power rankings on Cal, which slipped to 8th from 6th.
"Here's your welcome to the ACC moment, Cal
Play a game in which you look better than your opponent in *most* facets of the game and still find a way to lose against a team you should beat. Just don't give up seven sacks and actually finish your drives next time." - Matthew McGavic
Our defense played well enough to win. Our offense was another story. Our O-line continues to be a disaster and I'm convinced it's not the talent, its the schemes and assignments and play calling (when you have 7 in the box you don't run and you tell your QB to get rid of the ball quickly on a blitz beater). Our o-line had way to many offsides calls in very critical situations and one player in particular had 3 holding calls. This is all about technique and preparation, and it's clear we are deficient in both based on our performance against FSU. As Coach Wilcox says, the little things count when the margin between winning and losing is so small at the Power 4 level. On offense we weren't close to having the little things figured out by the 4th game. This worries me greatly. We have the horses, but is our OC up to the task? Our season, and probably Wilcox's job, depends on it.
Certainly the kicking game hurt us. But if we only score on 2 out of 5 trips to the red zone and if two of those drives end up going backward from around the 10 yard line because of penalties, then its on the offense. When I look at our offense I see a poorly built program where the fundamentals and little things have basically been ignored (technique, blocking schemes, and silent count). There is a tendency with the limited time allowed for practice these days to spend more time on practicing everything but the basics. When that happens you end up with what happened to us at FSU.
For the life of me I cannot figure out why we were beat so bad on pass pro. Coach needs to simplify it. As someone who has played and coached the O-line position, it is my experience that some coaches will demand their players do things that they are incapable of doing. In that instance the coach has to recognize limitations and adapt.
I have a lot of things I could recommend but I am not going to take the time other than to say that Bloesch needs to teach his o-line, in pass pro, how to pass off a d-lineman to one offensive lineman to prevent another player from succeeding with a delayed blitz. Anytime there is 2 on 1 protection in pass pro its an invitation to get beat. Defensive lineman are taught to work gaps to draw a double team to open a lane for delayed blitzers. This cannot be allowed to happen. There is no reason any of our o-line should get beat from tackle to tackle, inside, if they line up with correct splits, get to their assigned area in pass pro and don't get a aggressive on blocking - by that I mean in pass pro you need to be patient, put yourself in the intersection between the defender and the QB, but you still need to be nasty and physically punish the defensive linemen.
Just one thing that would help is that Bloesch ought to have his whole offensive line doing head up duck walks through the chutes before practice every day so they learn to keep their asses down, which provides maneuverability and leverage when in pass pro.
I see so much basic shit just fucked up it's hard to understand how it got this way. And it's incredibly frustrating.
Our euphoria over upsetting Auburn seems to have masked our offensive deficiency. 5-0 in turnovers, and we only won by a touchdown? Hopefully the bye week will allow the offense to figure things out.
Agreed, that's like anything in life, if you know what you are doing execution is automatic. Mistakes are minimal to none. Otherwise you get fired it's that simple.

Bloesch was a OC at North Texas, before being hired by Wilcox to replace Angus.

He's not wrong.
Maybe part of the trouble is we're too used to losing.
That being said, F*** him!
F him

I think it was our kicking game no? Doesn’t the play call change dramatically if we are up vs when we are down?
I think it too harsh the criticize offense when our kicking game is letting them down

I am not seeing it. I think our offense is ok. Not awesome but ok. When we get into 15 yards, we should produce points. We had multiple opps for that.
