I get kind of blurry with all the data but over time this will bear out some truth. We all know Auburn will be the first and best test before UW. I hope we are still in it strong in the 4th quarter when it will feel like midnight to those poor southern boys. Hard not to place schools in geopolitical context for me, and for this reason, I'll be screaming my brains out for a Cal victory over Freeze and his cold boys.
"I am a tad worried with the over reliance on the pass even on 3rd and < 5. Despite the 80% conversion rate it is still preferable for the team to just run the damn ball."
Don't you think that many or even most of those play calls are run/pass options? If so, given the success rate, it speaks well to the offense's execution and the QB's decision-making.
More generally, how should we account for RPO's in analyzing/passing judgment on play-calling?
I think the comparison to that OSU game is actually one of the notes that gives me the most optimism. That game is probably one of the ones that I remember the most with fond memories of how effective our offense looked. Maybe that, last year's Arizona game and 2021 Big Game. Anything with notes of those is good news.
I also did feel that, just as a viewer, I felt like our calls and effectiveness on third down seemed light years better in terms of play calling and expected productivity. (Except, perhaps, that screen to the short side of the field when Finley first came in).
Piotr, I like how you placed Oregon State in Cornwallis. As a history major, I’m definitely down with any Revolutionary/War of Independence references.
UNT has been a good team over the past few years, and it was a road game standing in the sun in > 90 degree weather. Cal barely squeaked out a home win against these guys a few years ago. Reflect on all the teams Cal has struggled against. Just last year, UC Davis had a 10-0 lead and kept it tied until the end of the 3rd quarter. This team is a different animal. 100% agree though that the real test will be on Saturday. Can hardly wait!!
Could be Bud, which is why we should go the game this Saturday night and actually cheer and yell for these kids when they are tested by the Auburn Tigers. Heck, we might even win. Go bears!
The Texas Green etc., played for the American Conference Championship last year. They were no pushover. that Conference has good teams like Tulane, Memphis, SMU, etc.

Too old. To manage the stairs, almost 87
And just had a stroke, I’ll stick with going to the rugby matches, but I’ll be there in spirit. Bud
When # of penalties in the 2nd half is the only flaw you can find (sorry Trond......), that's a pretty good game!!!!!
Anyone know an update on Cindric???
Thanks for the analysis, always interesting.

Nothing says cal like a screen pass with no screen
yeah what was that play...

Slow down we have been through this
Scene before. As much as I would like too see a winner for a change De La
Salle would have been a tougher test
than the green whatever. Give them a
Good test and then you can start with
The cheering.

Admittedly, we caught them in an awkward transition. New coach and they lost some talent in the Portal.
A LOT like Auburn......except they GAINED talent in the portal.......as did Cal. I hope it's a fun game in section TT !!!!!
True enough.
These stats, however, speak to good portents.
Auburn is the next test, for sure.
No one should buy any downplay or minimizing of Auburn's strength.
It will be a challenge, no doubt.
Go Bears!
