Hello and welcome to the newly revived Golden Nuggets, your one stop shop for sweet tasty Cal content. For those unfamiliar with this general sort of article, I’m going to do my best to highlight some of the stuff you may have missed that is Cal related or Cal-adjacent over the last week. And good Oski it sure was another week.
Go Bears, Go Vote!
We’re just a few weeks out from voting in the 2024 Presidential Election and your Cal Bears are trying to get out the vote! “An initiative started by Cal lacrosse alumna Madison Roberts, Go Bears Go Vote aims to ensure every student-athlete at Cal is registered to vote and has a plan to execute that vote as well.” Check your local or state’s voter registration process, but here in California, the deadline to register to vote was earlier this week. However, you can still register to vote on the same day. For more information, click here. Go Bears, and Go Vote!
Get Yourself Some New Threads
Things are cooling down, so it’s time to break out those sweatshirts and hoodies. But if isn’t quite that cool yet, you might like Homefield’s latest Cal Pullover. Or if you need some new shirts or crew necks, a special Write For California x Warriors World collaboration is available. Today’s the last day, so get this special collaboration and help support the Basic Needs Program at Cal!
New Conference, Same Bears Earning Honors
Marshawn Lynch and Charmin Smith were honored as ACC Unite Award winners as “individuals who have made an impact in racial and social justice.” You can read more about the award and Marshawn and Charmin’s important work here. Go Bears and Go Marshawn and Charmin!
While We’re Talking About Charmin…
Charmin Smith had herself a week, gaining commitments from Aliyahna Morris, the #24 overall player in the 2025 Class, Taylor Barnes, the #70 overall player in the 2025 Class. What a way to get some hype going into the 2024 season!
While We’re Talking About Marshawn
Marshawn is set to star in “Love Hurts” alongside recent Academy Award Winner Ke Huy Quan. Marshawn features prominently in the trailer and looks like he had a blast doing the film. Time to shore up Valentine’s Day plans with your partners. Catch the movie in theaters February 7.
Tell Me When To Go… To the Football Game
This Saturday, when Cal takes on Washington State Oregon State, is Bay Area Appreciation Day at California Memorial Stadium. Festivities will be headlined by Bay Area music legend E-40, with promotions including a special appearance, E-40 bobbleheads for the first 5,000 fans and a custom Bay Area chain for students attending the game. Discounted tickets (2 for $40!) are available here. Word on the street is that E-40’s The Lumpia Company will also be serving food at the stadium! Should be a hella good time. You can also catch ACC Players of the Week, Jack Endries and Craig Woodson. Congrats Jack and Craig!
Nohl Williams Watch
Nohl Williams continues to have a season! This week, Nohl was added to the Bednarik Award Watch List, given to College Football’s Defensive Player of the Year. Oh and he was also declared the 24th best player in College Football this year by ESPN. Nohl also leads the nation in interceptions still. Congrats and keep it up Nohl!
Preview the 2024-2025 Men’s Basketball Roster
Last week, our own BentPawn wrote a lot of words previewing the 2024 Cal Men’s Basketball Team. Given that Mark Madsen had 11 scholarship spots to fill, take a read and learn more about our new Bears!
The Bird is the Word
UC Berkeley Born and Campanile Dweller Equinox (pictured below) was found a few months ago injured at the Berkeley Marina where he was taken to the California Raptor Center for surgery and rehabilitation. After a few months getting his wings back under him, Nox was released last Friday and seems to be doing great. Go Bears and Go Nox!
Cal Athletics Roundup
To start, #25 Cal Women’s Soccer lost 5-2 to #12 Notre Dame and 2-1 to Louisville. Cal Men’s Water Polo (ranked #9) beat #17 Santa Clara 14-10 and beat Stanford 13-11, but lost 11-9 to #11 Princeton. Field Hockey lost 2-0 to Indiana and 3-1 to Iowa. Women’s Volleyball lost to #1 Pitt and #12 SMU. Men’s Soccer lost 2-0 to Portland but beat Saint Mary’s 4-2. Football lost 24-23 to North Carolina State.
Cal Pros Roundup
The NBA Tips Off this week as rookie Jaylon Tyson starts his first season, Jaylen Brown seeks to defend Boston’s title, and Jaylan Jason Kidd and the Mavericks seek to dethrone Boston. Good luck Pro Bears! Jared Goff unfortunately started to show some signs of regression going 22 for 25 for 280 Pass Yards and 2 TDs with a Passer Rating of 140, down from 153.8 the previous week and 155.8 the week prior. Hope Jared can turn it around!
That about wraps it up. Let me know what I forgot in the comments. And see you next week!
Where can I get the sauce for these golden nuggets?
Cal Women's Soccer just needs to get healthy. They were leading No.1 (by some measure) Duke 1-0 when star keeper Teagan Wy hurt her ankle and went out. Cal lost that match 2-1 and dropped the next two matches mentioned above without Wy.
