Interesting link. But it is clearly evident that most plays shown don't compare to The Play. The number two video, Auburn vs. Alabama, shows that nobody from Alabama even touched the Auburn returner.
Too bad that the video didn't include the key line in Starkey's covereage -- "there will be no extra point." (as it was not needed for Cal to win the game)
A couple of questions:
1) How many of you would like to have a Joe Starkey statue next to Kevin Moen's?
2) Which of the two statues is most important to show?
3) Do you think a electronic video, placed next to the a Joe Starkey statue, and returned to the stadium at night for safekeeping, should be placed next to a Starkey statue? I think It would help Cal be chosen to appear on College GameDay, which would help Cal football in many ways, including recruiting. All potential football and basketball players visting Cal should be taken to see the two statues and the video to see why Cal is so famous. It likely would be a big attraction to visit for many people visiting Cal.
Have some work to do regarding my suggestions in this email. The link below is consistent with my overall plan, which I have not yet disclosed to anyone other and Jim Knowlton.
I think a new conference, the Pac 9, should be created, with four teams from the old Pac 12 used -- Cal, Stanford, Oregon State, and Washington State. A recent article indictaed Oregon St. and Wash. St. were going to recruit Can and Stanford to rejoin OSU and WSU in the new Pac conference.
Under my plan, a second group of four teams would be added to the new Pac 9 -- UNLV, San Diego St., Hawaii, and Oregon State. The first three would be chosen because they have a long history, except for Hawaii, of being football powers. Under my plan, another group of two schools would be asked to join the Pac 9, Boise St and Fresno St. I believe Boise St. now has a string of twenty seven straight winning seasons in football consecutive winning season. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/boise-state/index.html I think Fresno St. has a long and proud football history. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/fresno-state/index.html
Because they are prime tourist destinations, with Oregon St. being included because it is close to the famous Oregon wineries (closer to them than U of Oregon). Since the conferencee would only have nine members, and there would still be twelve schduled games, every year each new Pac 9 school would play a game against all other conference member, one game away from home and the next one away or vice versa. This would allow teams to rotate playing a home game against each school and then, in the following year, the home team between the two teams would switch. So Cal could start playing Las Vegas in year one at Las Vegas with the two schools playing the next year at Cal, etc. San Diego and Hawaii are famous tourist destinations, with a lot of fun things to do there.
rThe same rotation between the nine schools would occur between the other schools in the ccnference not mentioned above, regardless of the tourist attractions they offer.
Think of all of the opportunities for fun Cal srudents and alumni could have in Vegas over a regular or long weekend, as would such groups supporting their team in that location. Same for when they follow their team to San Diego and Hawaii. This could be an aboslute great recruiting tool for all schools in the new Pac 9.
Please let me know if you have any questions. If so, I will try to respond.
This email wil be send to Jim Knowlton and Carol Christ.
Excellent work Tvist....miss you. Wondering from the moderators whether this write up has gotten any attention from our new brethren in the ACC, and their takes. Go Bears!
Tomorrow or the next day I will write up on WFC and Bear Insider how and why Cal and Stanford should get out of the multiple problems of playing football (and maybe also basketball) with the ACC schools and will suggest a better overall way (if not too late) to reorganize the Pac 12 and perhaps the Mountain West to enhance the benefits of the new Pac and MW something to its fans. I will also suggest that Cal organize a half or full day at Ca, on a Saturday,l to discuss this subject and other related subjects with our AD (if he even wants to participate) and with key people who are in the know about and/or are involved wth current Cal sports issues. Time to get all Cal fan views very quiicky on the table for a, hopefully, quick resolution and not just write about them. From what I have, there are quite a number of knowledgeable Cal fans who know about Cal's internal athletic related problems whose views should be heard on them.
I will also discuss other issues related to Cal sports. I was a yell leader for Cal in 1970, working closely with Cal's head yell leader, and clearly the best one in its history. Bob Tuck, the guy who led the California spellout with one arm and one leg while holding onto the pole on the southeast pole near the Cal student section.
I will also suggest that Cal create a new statue, of Joe Starkey, plus provide a constant video of the full The Play, which will end with him Starkey saying of The Play -- "there will be no extra point" (as Cal had won the game with Kevin Moen's touchdown). Without Starkey's famous and perfect call of The Play, it would not be nearly as famous as it now is and so would Cal being synonymous with that event. I think Starkey's name will always be more synonymous with The Play than Kevin Moen's touchdown run. Being able to use the Starkey video to promote The Play by having a statute of him and a video of The Play will make it more likely Cal could entice an appearance of College GameDay at Memorial, which has not yet occurred. I have already told Jim Knowlton I will contribute $40,000 to help pay for a statue of Starkey is constructed, placed next to Moen's and a mobile video is constucted and placed next to Moen's and move back into the stadirum at night for safekeeping. Of course, Cal having a good record during the first part of a season will be necessary for ESPN to choose to bring College GameDay to Memorial, and for the first time. Recent year's football results would not been good enough to do so.
This email will be sent to Carol Christ and Jim Knowlton.
Counts 3 and 4 are their best arguments but even then, super weak. And they didn't allege negligence? Need to terminate the associate that drafted this.
This is also the impression I have: FSU may have some legitimate complaint about how the specific terms of the ESPN deal are being handled by the conference. None of that actually gets them out of the Grant of Rights, though . . . it just means FSU could maybe force the ACC to renegotiate its media rights. The ACC would still own FSU's media rights, which they willingly signed away twice
Wow. Such a well written dismembering of FSU's arguments behind their lawsuit. And I get to enjoy it pro bono over coffee. Thank you Twist&Hook. I agree with everyone else who has spoken already and essentially said "quit sniveling, you're getting plenty of $$". Given that any NCAA teams fortunes can evaporate via the transfer portal - hey AZ - and after getting steam-rolled by GA, perhaps FSU would be better served by doubling-down on prep for next season. Roll on!
Again, great write up. Twist, you should have gone to law school, become a lawyer, and set up a practice such as Twist Law Group. Oh wait, did you try that?
You are golden in these parts.
Better hide your face though, FSU fans might want to “Punch [somebody] in the face .”
Unilateral extension was a term of the 2016 amended media rights agreement approved by all of the schools….and has nothing to do with GOR, so how can it be a breach of the GOR?
The only potentially relevant claim is the validity of the 2021 amendment to extend the deadline by which ESPN must provide notice of their intent to exercise the option to the ACC, but even that doesn’t have bearing on the GOR. It impacts the media rights agreement.
