I'm guessing the writer just forgot to check the box to allow comments from all vs. subscribers. I'm also pretty sure most of the other writers aren't checking comments, so they haven't seen the problem; don't be afraid to email the staff in these cases. I'll remind writers to be more diligent. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
This is looking like a glitch on Substack's part. We will let them know and get them to look into this. I have on idea why things seem to work in the first-half threads and in last week's open thread, but then issues arose in the second-half thread and in today's open thread (the latter was written and scheduled weeks ago).
Apologies if you felt dismissed on Twitter. I'm stepping back in my responsibilities and not really involved in that account any more.
At least there is a 2nd half thread. Would love to see what people were thinking in the first half. WFC should really consider not waiting until halftime to get going.
Though I don't see the appeal of dredging through an old live thread, I have no idea why this is the new policy; it wasn't my opinion and I don't think my opinion will be taken into consideration. If you have a recommendation, I would recommend a friendly request to the staff via email.
There are no words. To be honest, having 5 or 6 shots for a touchdown inside the ten and not executing is unbelievable. Maybe we should have run the ball three times in a row when it was first and goal from the three. Remigio whiffed on a fairly routine catch as well. Pretty sure we are the best 1-5 team in the nation but given that we could mostly hang with Oregon (except maybe KT) all of these losses when considered cumulatively are unacceptable. Not sure if this moral victory gives Wilcox another year or not. I suppose if we win two or more games (and the Big game) that his seat will not be red hot til after next season.
We have to be the most snakebit team in the history of college football. Even the announcers on ESPN radio couldn't believe how many close losses we have had this season. Close losses seem to be our specialty (whether under Dykes or Wilcox) and all I can say is that this REALLY SUCKS!!!! I played poker tonight with a bunch of Cal alums and none of us could stand to turn on the game because we knew what was going to happen; Another heartbreaking, last-second, close loss. Sure enough, when the poker game was over and we turned on the tube, that is exactly what had happened. This has just been one of the more unlucky years for Cal Football. Oregon is loaded at every position and we almost beat them so I guess that is a bit of a silver lining to take away from tonight. The rest of the season can still be salvaged if we can just get over the hump and win close games. Better yet, just win games and stop making them close games. Our defense once again collapsed in the fourth quarter.
We may end up the best 2-10/3-9 team in the nation this year. But with our recruiting so far, don’t hold your breath waiting for next year - and staff knows it at this point as well. Still hoping for the best, prepared fir the worst, not surprised by anything in between.
This game reminds me of that This American Life ep with the squirrel. I can't say that Cal did anything that made me mad, but I can't really say thank you either.
should Cal lose 2 more and I hope they don't, this staff had better play the future for however many games are left on the schedule. We have to move on from this era of really terrible offense.
Agreed...Garbers battles out there, but boy his inability to consistently hit on just some of the deep shots when they’re available, which isn’t often, is troublesome. At least 2 or 3 today that he overthrew wide open guys.
Be so nice to get Millner some game action...we’ll see if they think this way....
Nikko has to catch that ball...don’t care if he’s 5’8” and has to jump...he left his feet, had a clear look, and just muffed it. Tough catch? Sure. Should your possession guy with giud hands make it...absolutely.
They don’t make enough plays to win under Wilcox...period. The games are there for them, on the table...Nevada, TCU, UW, UO - make a big play, f-ing somebody!!
I think TDR wanted to send Craig a message, "son, you ain't going to the League cuz the League is full of KT's". Craig's attempt at a chop block was a true sign of desperation and kinda sad really.
QB draw was a good call and almost worked...but it didn't. I do wonder why they didn't use Latu for a middle pass...easy and quick throw for Chase to execute. Nikko should have caught his ball, period. And chase earlier missed 2 wide open throws. We just don't have a QB that can perform when it matters most, simple. And our OL is really really bad and has been exposed yet again. Change the QB and OL...immediately.
And also I don't like how only paying subscribers can comment in the second half thread every week. I don't know if it's a glitch or on purpose, but it happens every week. We should just keep the first half thread for all game since we know it's a known issue every week.
Probably an oversight for the second half and definitely an accident on my part got the non-Cal thread. I'll republish the non-Cal thread when I get home later today. I thought I made mine open to all, but apologies.
Well I’m glad I fell asleep for the end now
Was I the only one who couldn't post in the second half thread?

I mentioned in the twitter, and was told everything is fine. It wasn't.
And that's why I'm saying we should not split the game thread because we already know it happens often in the second half thread.

Thanks, no problem.
I just wanted to participate and share the moment with others during the game.

I don’t understand why they can’t just post both threads up at the same time and then just leave them unlocked until Sunday.

Was there anyone trapped in there? Commenting was turned off there too.
It is like being trapped in the Twilight Zone.
I see Justbear had this problem too

We only had 5 or 6 close losses under Dykes. Most of our WINS were actually close, so his one-score record was much better.

The best 2-10 or 3-9 team is like marrying your prettiest cousin. Might fly in Kentucky but won’t cut it in California.

I don't care about 2 or 3. He missed a wide open WR in the end zone with 30s left.
I'm not mad at this one.
Damn, that last failed drive was painful football to watch.
This team isn’t mentally tough. Wilcox has got to go.
Nikko has to catch that ball...don’t care if he’s 5’8” and has to jump...he left his feet, had a clear look, and just muffed it. Tough catch? Sure. Should your possession guy with giud hands make it...absolutely.

I agree with all of this. That is fine in year 1 or 2 but in year 5 if his guys can’t make these plays to win then it is on Wilcox.
Wharton would have caught that.
After Cal went ahead 17-10, Cal just played 'matador' defense. Unbelievably bad. Choked?
Another disgusting, heartbreaking loss!
I'm surprised TDR didn't line up KT on our right side. He would have beat Daltoso on every play.
I think TDR wanted to send Craig a message, "son, you ain't going to the League cuz the League is full of KT's". Craig's attempt at a chop block was a true sign of desperation and kinda sad really.
It was brutal...and Craig is supposedly our best...a 4* recruit awhile back...abused by Thibs...
No moral victories in year 5 when you’re 1-5.
Red zone play calling on that last drive from the 3 was brutal.
QB draw was a good call and almost worked...but it didn't. I do wonder why they didn't use Latu for a middle pass...easy and quick throw for Chase to execute. I agree but it would have been nice to call one running play with our RBs.
Especially since the OL struggles so much with pass protection.
And on the last play, Oregon blitzed everybody why wasn't there any open receiver for us?
I think we had a bunch formation on the right. Unless that was the previous play. Hard to get someone open on a blitz when 3 are bunched together.
Was thinking a "quick" jump pass there. Seems nothing we do is quick.
That's what I hoped too. It only had to be a 2 yard pass.
Wasn't time for Garbers to find anyone, anywhere.
Latu our 6'7" TE should have been in the deep middle of the end zone catching an 8' high ball
so many penalties by the OL and most at crucial points that just killed drives
6 holding calls alone - embarrassing
This is often what happens when over-matched, speed-wise. Holding is better than getting Garbers killed.
They were overwhelmed and overmatched.

It happened last week and this for the non Cal game thread too.
