Cal players and alumni react to the Justin Wilcox extension with enthusiasm
The Bears really appreciate their head coach.
Reactions to the news that Justin Wilcox would be staying in Berkeley for the long haul were met with positive reactions all-around. Wilcox has a strong reputation in the locker room and the general response to a four-year extension keeping him at Cal until 2027 reflects that.
Plenty of Bears retweeted the news, like Chase Garbers, Matthew Cindric, Luc Bequette, Jermaine Terry, Kuony Deng, Lu-Magia Hearns, Nate Burrell. Same with alumni like Evan Weaver, Patrick Laird and Addison Ooms, as well as assistants like Burl Toler and Geep Chryst, Derek Haithcock and Will Heck.
Cal running back Marcel Dancy had these encouraging words for Wilcox, offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave and tight ends coach Geep Chryst.
Cal graduate and tight end Collin Moore had these words to say on Wilcox’s impact.
Cal graduate and defensive back Josh Drayden was super enthusiastic.
As was Cal defensive end Derek Wilkins.
New Cal director of player personnel Marshall Cherrington couldn’t be more excited.
Ditto Cal director of recruiting comms Brendan McInerny.
Cal quality control coach Mike Bruno was pumped.
Former Cal wide receiver Geoff MacArthur (who was with the Bears when Wilcox was an assistant under Jeff Tedford) was very happy with the decision.
So was Wilcox’s former player, Cal linebacker alum Francis Blay-Miezah.
And of course our old friend Mike Silver was ready.
There’s definitely lots of excitement in Bear Territory knowing that the football program is in stable hands for the rest of the decade.
Dancy slipped in the depth chart this year, but he kept showing up to work, and his efforts paid off big time, with game-changing big runs against LSJU and USC.
Some players might've stopped working so hard in his shoes, and some might've fallen out with the coaching staff, but Dancy did neither. He's always exemplified the kind of student-athlete we want at Cal, and if he trusts this staff, that carries a lot of weight.
These comments from players and alums speak volumes and reinforce the value of the decision to extend Coach Wilcox....so happy! GO BEARS!!!!
