Cal Football: Is Coach Wilcox on the 'Hot Seat?'
Justin Wilcox is one of the top four coaches on the 'hot seat,' according to new analysis
California head coach Justin Wilcox could be on the “hot seat,” according to a recent national analysis of college football coaches nationwide.
The hypothetical odds Coach Wilcox might be the next college football coach to be fired this season is +600, according to Dan Kilbridge, a handicapper at the sports-betting website Bookies.com.
Coach Wilcox’s +600 odds imply the sixth-year head coach of the Golden Bears has a 14.29% probability of getting the boot.
The analysis, published before yesterday’s 35-41 defeat against No. 9 USC Trojans, calculated hypothetical odds, Bookies.com told Write for California in an email, meaning there are no U.S. sportsbooks taking bets on the next college football coach to be fired. Kilbridge noted he prepared these odds for entertainment purposes only.
Still, the handicapping and odds data provided to Write for California could help shed light on how the California Golden Bears are perceived across the country.
“Wilcox moves up the board to +600 after an uninspiring 42-24 home loss to Oregon,” Kilbridge said. “That made it four losses in a row for the Bears, the rest of which were far less forgivable - none more so than a 13-10 overtime loss to lowly Colorado.”
Colorado is one of at least six college football programs that have fired their head coach this season.
Colorado fired Karl Dorrell after the Buffaloes lost five straight games, while fellow Pac-12 program Arizona State reportedly fired Herm Edwards on the field after a 21-30 loss to Eastern Michigan at home. Edwards was also the subject of an NCAA probe into potential recruiting violations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other college football coaches who lost their head coach jobs this season include Bryan Harsin from Auburn, Geoff Collins from Georgia Tech, Scott Frost from Nebraska and Paul Chryst from Wisconsin.
According to the Bookies.com report, Jeff Scott from South Florida is the college football coach with the hottest seat in the country. The +200 odds imply a 33% probability.
Other college football coaches on the hot seat, per Bookies.com, are Jeff Hafley from Boston College, Neal Brown from West Virginia, Jimbo Fisher from Texas A&M and Scott Satterfield from Louisville.

no coach with a buyout as large as his is on the hot seat. not in the getting fired sense. is he maybe on the hot seat in the sense of losing control over his hiring/firing of say.....Musgrave and McClure? under almost any other AD, but not with Knowlton. if Wilcox cared about making a statement that this performance isnt good enough they would be long gone. but instead we get "OKG" and other stupid bland coaching remarks
Though it was a loss, Cal just played their best game of the season, considering the caliber of opponent, and that it was on the road. Winning would have really cooled the seat, but last night didn't add much heat.
