Walton calls the bf of one of the Tinkle girls a 'house boy'. Haha, classic.

Mark Fox is a good coach... give him time..

Bill Walton, "Buffalos need 60 pounds of grass per day." He pauses then says, "Sounds like some friends of mine."

LMAO as tears rolled down my cheeks.

Man that's tough a classic Cal offensive rut (both of Colorado and Cal's doing) dooms us in a close game yet again. I love me some Jalen Celestine (he brought more to the table than I anticipated) and DJ Thorpe who I said to Nick should be competing for 7th to 8th man minutes over Lars Thiemann because frankly he's so much better and more fundamentally sound than he will ever be. Makale Foreman stinks and unlike Betley was not able to recover over the last 2/3 of the season and I really hated his shot selection over the whole season ,if i wanted a chuker on the team I would've just watched Darius Mcneil play (the stats may not meet the ire of this statement but I personally didn't like what he brought to the table ever). Hopefully we can get this rotation figured out and get DJ Thorpe more minutes as he's my version of campaigning for a player like gobears49 did with Jaden Casey did before he left. Go Bears and on to 2021-2022!

Let's say "underperformed" rather than stinks. But Standard? Yeah Stanfurdstinks.

Mark Fox needs to be fired by March 31st.

Expand full comment

Fox needs to go. I see no reason to delay the inevitable for even 1 day longer.

Expand full comment

I don't see anyway that happens.

Expand full comment

Feel free to make the case for him to stay.

If he's fired by March 31st, we will have to pay him a total buyout of $1,293,750.

If he is retained until April 1 and fired next year, then we will have to pay him $1,725,000 in salary for next year + $900,000 to buy out year 5 of his contract. Plus we lose a year of time to rebuild the program with an actual good coach.

Expand full comment

So the way I think of it, if we fire him now, yes we pay an extra $393,750 on the buyout. But! If we can hire a new coach for say, $1,325,000 in salary for the first year, we'd still come out ahead financially.

If we hire a guy like say, Dennis Gates to use a hot name on the market... he's currently making $280,000 per year in base salary. He should be gettable at $1.3M. Plus we could backload and incentivize a new contract so that he gets raises and makes more on the back end after our cash flow frees up when Fox and Wyking are off the books.

Gates is also supposedly in the running at Penn State, too. I'm sure there are other options, but I think Fox has to go.

I want Fox gone more than anyone. I just don’t trust this AD to do the right thing. We didn’t so much as call Gates over the course of two head coaching searches. Unforgivable. When this experiment runs it’s course after next year or whenever, he will have been picked up by a better program or will likely just play us for another. And given our unwillingness to even consider him till now, I wouldn’t blame him. We are a clown show.

Do we even have offensive plays? It's all motion off the top of the key, wait, pray.

Expand full comment

No one runs offensive plays anymore. This is the least compelling argument about Fox - all modern offenses are motion and sets.

Fire Fox - 100%. "We don't run plays" - nobody runs plays in 2021.

Glad you noticed that. It defn feels like we run an initial motion and then it’s let our best player or ball handler try and break down a 1-on-1

Great that we saved DJ Thorpe for the very last game. Team has fought hard all year and played with class despite it all.

He was. I care more about DJ though. I need to pay more attention to him on defense and he may not have range, but he looks really solid in the post. I barely saw him all year and you have to wonder why not.

Thorpe should be ahead of Thiemann in the rotation. Lars adds nothing.

It was a good effort by a team lacking enough scoring. Colorado easily double teamed Bradley, as all should, given how much we rely on him. This season comes to a close. I'm confident that Fox can get players to fight hard and give their best. Time will tell if Fox can recruit players good enough to compete highly in the Pac12 and coach them to play winning ball. Go Bears.

Awesome write up, Nick. During the Furd game I actually taped 10 seconds of Bill Walton commentary to demonstrate to some friends how crazy an announcer he can be. And thanks, Bears, for fighting and scrapping this season!

Mark McNamara. It's too bad Jamal Sampson didn't stick around another year, cause I think he could have done special things.

Leon Powe...but really more of a 4/5 than a pure 5. Dude could post up for sure.

Too bad that Foreman's 3 rattled out. If we had gotten into overtime I think the Bears would have had a chance to pull off the upset, in spite of losing Bradley.
