Good news for the conference as a whole. We need to get our house in order, but a stronger conference should only help us in a myriad of ways even if USC becomes a monster again.
Lincoln Riley is totaling toshing and pillaging the Oklahoma recruiting class. A lot of Oklahoma’s top were recruits are from SoCal and they are all decommitting.
Wouldn't doubt it. Also wouldn't doubt that some of the kids are simply seeing it for what it is, and didn't even need to be recruited for USC. They signed up for Riley and he's gone, so they're gone. If Riley is at USC, might be the natural move from them if staying home is a plus for them.
I think Garbers is the ceiling and not Wilcox. Obviously Wilcox isn't a top 10 coach, but as long our offensive play calling is limited by our QB it's going to affect the entirety of our game.
There are much greater forces than Knowlton that prevent us from making splashy hires, but I do wish at least we could trust him to make a smart choice with the resources we have. I do not.
Yes, Chris Petersen. I have it on reliable authority that he has considered Cal as a coaching stop in the past. He grew up in Northern California and his dad lives about an hour away. That would be a dream hire but I don't think we can afford him.
It's Kalen DeBoer - a couple of no-name sites reporting he'll be announced tomorrow.
SOURCES: The University of Washington has zeroed in on former Indiana OC & current Fresno State HC, Kalen Deboer, as its next head football coach. He is expected to be announced by the end of tomorrow by Washington.
If so, that’s not good news for Cal. Fresno State was able to move the ball, score and beat ucla. Imagine what he can do with UW athletes when he plays us.
Seems like the wrong off-season to fire Wilcox, but a move has to be made at some point, seems like our best option is Troy Taylor, or stealing a fired other coach (Mullen, Herman, etc.)
How about Jon Gruden? I know Berkeley is too politically correct for that but I don’t care about 10 year old emails. And he has some strong roots in the Bay Area.
I know Fire Sarkey has some crazy off the field stories about Herman but if he can learn from those mistakes, I would gladly take Herman at Cal.
Herman’s power spread with a decent DC would be great at Cal. I know academics aren’t as big an issue at UT Austin but they are a good academic school, it isn’t like they have state standards.
He has the 7th ranked recruiting class for 2022 and the 1st ranked recruiting class for 2023 with three five-stars and one four-star from SoCal. He'll be fine.
At UW it's going to be DeBoer as HC w/JT as his consultant - same role he played under Chris Peterson for 1 year.

I see that 'toshing' is now a verb.

We're doomed.
When other teams are getting flashy hire HCs, I want one too.
I like Wilcox but I think Wilcox and Garbers have hit a ceiling and while we could do a lot worse, we won't do any better than current either.

That’s a good point…QB play under JW has ranged from solid-but-limited in Garbers to downright inept (pretty much all QBs not named Chase Garbers)…
We've got the wrong AD for splashy hires. He farms this schitt out to search firms that bring in retreads. There's no splash.

Who would have thought firing Clay Helton would have resulted in Oklahoma and TCU fighting over Sonny Dykes?
https://twitter.com/MacEngelProf/status/1465066265706479628
Wow, that would be a crazy turn of events. TCU thinks they have their coach and then they have to start all over again.
Sonny's wandering eye...
The biggest tragedy was the Texas Tech job opening up shortly after Dykes took the Cal job, and he stuck with Cal.
Pretty quick this time!!
That seems pretty far fetched
Udub player only meeting 2morrow morning.
Has to be the Fresno Stats head coach.
I wonder if they have a home run hire like $C.....
Who would be a home run hire right?
CP probably isn’t coming back.
Who is CP?
Petersen?

Even if the Cal job were open, which it is not currently, I have zero faith in Knowlton to pull off something like that.
It is for UW, not Cal.
I think the conversation is for UW not us
No one conceived of the Riley hire, that was a shocker. Could lightening strike twice in the Pac12 within 24 hours? Who knows.
If not, it won't be for lack of trying...they've been apparently kicking a lot of tires.
Maybe it's not the job the fan base thinks it is?
Washington fans and delusional self-image. They just go together.
Pete Carrol if he gets fired

It would be kinda rough actually. He turned that Indiana offense into something not seen since Randle El, and has strong ties to the upper midwest.
Dynamic play caller and well liked by his players. It would be a solid hire.
so, USC goes "outside the family"? that may make all the difference.
They’ve tried so many times and failed with each one of Pete’s retreads. It was only a matter of time before they made a decent hire
Having a real AD in charge instead of having Swann and Haden gladhand the program helped for sure.

You be crazy there.
What a terrible take lmao.
God no. To quote Smith, "It is better to play the game squarely and lose than to win at the sacrifice of an ideal."
Brazen choice.
But Wilcox has lost his "cool" factor. He's no longer a young up and comer.
I know Fire Sarkey has some crazy off the field stories about Herman but if he can learn from those mistakes, I would gladly take Herman at Cal.

Would love Herman.
Did you read the fire starkey post about Herman in the DBDs a week ago or so?
I didn't. Give us a clue.
Showing up drunk to recruiting visits, having an affair with a jewelry designer, cussing out donors, etc.
Absolutely
Texas admin isn't as big on sticking the same standards on athletes though
Lincoln Riley has been intentionally recruiting the West Coast this year, masterminding this move.

Dunno, Bob. It's USC & he's a proven winner...he'll keep CA talent in-house & draw from Big 12 region as well.
The transitional period could last about 7 minutes.
" The transitional period could last about 7 minutes." wow, that's totally not acceptable for mighty USC. They should fire him and start over
