Though the article doesn't say exactly why Pese would change schools just one week after committing to Cal, I'm assuming it has to do with NIL. Or maybe the kid is just immature.

There a huge difference practicng in stadium 73 degree weather vs 90 degree weather.

Weather had nothing to do with this.

I wonder if his “commitment” to UA read like the one to Cal but with the names changed…. Sorry not sorry for being salty. This seems like the kind of recruit we may see in a Cal uni down the road if he doesn’t get the field time he expects, etc. I wish home the best.

How much did UA NIL pay him?

Geof, agreed, Arizona is hot and nothing to do. Don't forget JCUOs and alot of these high school kids might not be on the roster in two or three years.

During most of the school year, the weather in Tucson is pleasant (but very hot in summers). During hot weather, the football team can practice early in the morning or late in the day. I have lived in Tucson; actually, it's quite a nice, medium-sized city. The population of the Tucson metro area is slightly over one million.

First of all, I'm not worried about losing this prospect. Bigger and better ones are still out there and are truly interested in competing at Cal in AND outside of the classroom. Wink, wink. I believe this young man was in Tucson barely a week after giving Cal his commitment. That tells you all that you need to know. ACC vs. Big 12? Playing Clemson vs Texas Tech. OK. I got it. lol.

Why should anyone want to go to Arizona? I've been in Tucson and it's TOO HOT. Practicing and playing games in plus 100* heat can't be the enticement. Maybe more money is the reason.

(Dad joke alert) I guess we’re were one Bear down.

It's going to happen. For the longest time teams have been able to out recruit Cal.. However, this particular version of Cal's recruiting staff has been formidable across the country.

Our focus has been the transfer portal. But at some point in time we're gonna have to shift to the local kids because that is the foundation. You need kids that are gonna grow with your program over four years. I'm not saying that California has done anything wrong because they needed every single recruit that they have to compete. I'm saying now. There should be more attention given to the local kids especially the ones that live in california and double especially if they're from the bay area. All of the local three star kids from the bay area need to be at Cal.

The current Cal strategy is actually not bad. Why not completely focus on transfer portal? Vast majority of kids don't make an impact as a true freshman, and there is significant risk in the transition from HS to college. Focusing on the portal eliminates a lot of the transition risk and gives you a better idea of what you're getting through the portal. Sure there will be some kids that can grow with a program, but most of those will also get picked off through the portal. You'll have an advantage to keep them, but ultimately we're now in a world where $$$ will make the biggest impact.

You are correct period we need to do both, but if we can find some kids that will stay for years through the program that would be better and we could be less dependent on the transfer portal. There are always going to be exceptions, but you have to pay these incoming kids too. So the money part is gonna be there, but I would imagine. It would be much cheaper to get them before they get to college unless they're some kind of McDonald's All American.

Not every local wants to stay local, athlete or not. Sometimes kids want to put some distance from parents and familiar surroundings and be far enough away to enjoy their first true sense of independence.

It's not just recruiting anymore. It's about the size of the NIL paycheck. It's the reason Nick Saban retired. Kids now have unlimited free agency (the NFL doesn't even have that). The majority of the time they will go where the biggest paycheck is offered.

Yep.. When you see Saban leaving Alabama, the top college football program for a long time, you know that college football no longer has the remotest connection to "college." Why Cal continues to rut around in the pig sty of the muck of college football is beyond me.

Win and most will come.

By "win" I take it you mean "offers the most cash."

Tyson took a smaller NIL deal than he could have because he wanted to play for Coach Madsen. Do it with what you will..
