Given Madsen’s background as a player, it’s disappointing that the Bears have not been able to recruit many inside bangers. Without this, their offense is mostly outside-outside.
Again, the lack of a non conference schedule has proven disaster. They are not ready to play top tier teams. Several players are over matched and are basically no shows. Guys that were scoring against the cupcake teams , can barely get a shot off against quality opponents. I don’t know who the consistent scorers are. One thing I do know after two years, is the Madson motion offense that the team runs is a challenge, let’s just say that.
I think this roster has so many holes that it would struggle with good teams regardless of who we played in the non-conference slate.
This is largely a roster of mid-major role players…now you’re asking them to jump up in class and play legit ACC teams. We’re just not even close to this level talent wise.
If we can be a middle-of-the-pack ACC team, that's progress. That's a position where the program can become a destination instead of a stepping stone. Can't tell yet if we're there or a step below and capable of over-performance.
Dort has improved, no doubt, as evidenced by his numbers in non-con v mid-major schools…but unfortunately he’s still got more work to do offensively to be an impact player v ACC bigs.
We don’t force a lot of turnovers and we don’t rebound well, so easy transition buckets are minimal. We simply don’t have a capable true P4 big, which makes our O a real slog…ball doesn’t even make it into the post all that much. We’re dead in the water when Bell or Vamden struggle.
Hey it's an East Coast road game against a top 25 team that was favored by 15.
Then again, it was probably the worst performance of the year. Second half was just miserable. It felt like the Refs altered the flow of the game at the end of the first half and Virginia capitalized while we went stagnant.
I really did not like the rotation in the second half. I was hoping DJ could play the energy guy role and I think he does some good stuff off ball, but he should not be looking to score on tough shots.
I am getting the sense that Rytis is not returning anytime soon; what a shame. He was the guy on the team that could get the ugly shots underneath when the game bogs down. Huge loss for us.
And I agree that the offense is lacking creativity. We are just not able to move the ball as well and as quickly against teams with superior length. All this weave and roll off top; we need more dives and back door/base line stuff mixed in. We don't really have a pure 4 or stretch 4 on the team; I think that is hurting us.
Still have faith in these guys. Splitting this road trip would be a good accomplishment. Go Bears.
I just can't watch Cal basketball games anymore. They are stressful and disappointing. Your whole athletic program has been ruined by being in this AWFUL ACC!
The program appears to be making progress, but we are not on Virginia's level yet. Beating them in their gym was indeed a very tall order.

If and when the size of our war chest for MBB becomes similar to FB on a relative basis, then I think we might be able to compete with the big boys.
My sense is that the level of funding that we have for MBB is small because literally all of our attention is being given to FB.
Thanks BP.

An NIT bid would be fantastic for this team.

Rytis is out for the year.
