Question... is the DQ in the 400 medley or IM today going to hurt them at the NCAA meet?

Seems unusually sloppy for this squad to get these DQs

I'm not particularly concerned. The Whitley to Hoffer exchange should get tested again tomorrow evening in the 200 medley relay, but I'm willing to bet Coach Durden will have them nailing those exchanges in practice. As for Hugo, he already has an A-cut in the 200 breast and he has a B-cut in the 200 IM so he's all good to go on that front (i.e., he doesn't need an A-cut in the 400 IM tomorrow). The results have him as "False Start - Misc," which seems to me is a small fidget after the official ready. This seems like a freak incident to me, but I'll keep an eye on Hugo's start tomorrow night to see if I notice anything unusual. On another note, Cal definitely have had aggressive relay starts in the past (there have been so pretty consequential DQs at NCAAs in the last few years). All the starts in the 800 free relay and 200 free relay looked fairly safe. Again, I'll pay attention in the next 2 relays, but I'm not particularly worried.

Thanks. I missed that Hugo swam a time trial at day one of the meet and put up the 4th best 200 Breast time in the country. I guess he was doing that in case he ends up swimming 200 Back rather than 200 Breast on Saturday.

Not really, because Cal already posted a 400 medley relay time that meet the A-cut. As for Hugo Gonzalez, his best event is the upcoming 400 IM where he's already close to the A-cut time. Assuming that he qualifies for the 400 IM event tomorrow with a small drop in time (he's the 2nd overall seed), his already good enough time for the 200 IM will allow him to race in that event.

Still, Bears need to be less sloppy in the NCAA when the race against Texas will be extremely close yet again.
