How about some reverses and counters. Some speed options. Less straight drop backs. Etc.

Might be time to stop trying to run exclusively between the tackles.

RB's per CAL stats have caught 19 passes so far... with Ott healthy I would think/hope that rate should go up now but ... yeah... even if the OC thinks they can't run wide they should be doing something to widen the field...

Very concerned about our OL pass protection and run blocking

I don’t like empty backfields because we need the blocker

Actually with we had a big FB for some obvious pass plays

Keep Mendoza rolling and buy time

Agree, we lost the FSU game because we didn’t pick up their extra man, we had no RB blocker, and because he didn’t roll

When I saw that play I assumed he would roll away from defender but apparently he didn’t see him???

I agree but it does bring an interesting question to mind... single back release to become the outlet leaving the backfield effectively emptyish... wouldn't that reduce the hits/sacks and potentially keep the front 7 a bit more honest? Given the above note about running between the tackles and Mendoza's general accuracy it seems like a classic mode of attack...

Yeah even if RB doesn’t stay to block they can release as a receiver… RB needs to make the read

If we can run the ball as well as we did against SDSU in the second half that would bode well. That means the O line has to execute their blocks and not get pushed back at the line of scrimmage. This also will allow Cal to control the clock and keep the pigskin out of Ward's hands.

The caveat is that Miami's D-line is way more physical than that of SDSU presumably so we kind of have our work cut out for us.
