anyone see that Lanning video saying he plans to stay?

What an awesome little video... makes me wanna play for him.

Justin Wilcox......21-37 conference record and bottom tier conference performance on defense the past few seasons despite being a "defensive mind." Oh, and he convinced ZERO four-star high school recruits to come to Cal in this high school recruiting class when Lanning and his team got 20. No doubt he will be high up on Oregon's list when and if Lanning gets the call from Alabama. No one's coming for Wilcox, folks, although I don't blame the author for stirring up the emotions on this subject.

Bluehenbear's avatar

Maybe bama will interview Wilcox

< chortle >

Duck head coach Tosh Lupoi is possible though

Toohandy's avatar

He's not the Ducks head coach. He's the defensive coordinator .

Justbear's avatar

He's saying it's possible, if Lanning leaves.

Rugbear's avatar

Lupoi won't be head coach of Oregon.

GoldenBear88's avatar

Saban will get bored in retirement and then announce; "I want to stay busy but not too busy so I will be the next football coach at Cal." Stand by for the announcement any day now!

AndyPanda's avatar

"There are no implications for Cal...yet." Key word yet. This will send waves, never mind ripples, throughout CFB, not just to those immediately and directly involved. It will cause a lot of dominoes to fall, and also impact the overall CFB environment.

@RexVolcano

nick saban did not want to coach in a world without the pac-12 and I respect it

I really hope this doesn't happen. I love Coach Wilcox and he loves Cal.

But I'm worried Oregon, and all of their alumni, will come even harder for him if they lose yet another Coach. They need to stop the carousel. They need an "Oregon Guy". Family.

It would suck.

The only way we could recover... and its a long shot...

Bring Coach Rivera home to California.

I feel like some bridges might have been burned the last time around. If rumors are to be believed, there were some stings attached to that offer which might have been a bit insulting to Wilcox. And I can't imagine Oregon folks were that enthused to get turned down in favor of staying at Cal.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I really hope this does happen. Wilcox is a good guy, very good DC but not a good head coach. Cal will be just fine without him.

Bhec's avatar

Recover from what?......really?

AndDriveDriveDrive's avatar

I hope it doesn’t impact us. I don’t want an unstable environment coming into the ACC.

Kingpindonuts's avatar

Oregon wanted Wilcox first before Lanning.

Obviously bamas going to do the same.

Until of course Wilcox turns it down.

Justbear's avatar

And Knowlton offers an even bigger extension contract

Gobears157's avatar

No way Oregon will take Wilcox. I don't buy it. Oregon consistently has championship aspirations, not a consistently .500 coach.

Justbear's avatar

They can take Sirmon instead then.

Avinash Kunnath's avatar

They went after him two years ago after a 5-7 season. It's not the likeliest thing but it is in the realm of possibility.

Peetyjay's avatar

His reputation as a coach who consistently churn out a stout defense has taken a sign a significant hit since then.

GoldenSD81's avatar

That’s when him and his agent could still sell Wilcox as an “up and coming” HC with a potentially high ceiling.

Everyone now sees that ceiling is about 5 feet, 7 inches tall.

Gobears157's avatar

Sure, probability may not be 0. But I’d bet my house that probability is significantly closer to 0 than it is to even .5.

It’s like an NBA bench player is a whole lot closer to Steph curry than some random gym rat who plays regularly at the local gym.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Alabama should just hire defensive guru and good guy Wilcox.

HelloBowlesHall's avatar

Everybody should hire a defensive guru and good guy Wilcox. Pretty please?

ShanghaiDave93's avatar

Oregon - take our Coach please!

You can afford to buy him out.

We’ll then use to money to get Riverboat Ron

Toohandy's avatar

Rivera is a great guy but his coaching record? Nah

OldSoCalBear's avatar

I think the optimistic view would be that he's another Pete Carroll, who struggled in the NFL before going to SC

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I want Rivera as Director of Athletics…

dcblue's avatar

I’d rather have him there than fb hc. I don’t pay super close attention to the Commanders, but he was in charge of personnel and head coach and didn’t really do well at either. He seems like a really good guy so maybe could be a good recruiter but

I’d rather they try someone else if it comes to that.

Amen, brother, a-frikkin-men!

KetamineCal's avatar

Lanning to Bama, Wilcox to Oregon, Saban to Cal??? /s

cleancutmedia's avatar

it happens in my mind.

so that I can have that crushing feeling of defeat that all CAL fans secretly crave.

ShanghaiDave93's avatar

Sounds like an even swap

mrjpark's avatar

BTW, does anyone know what's going on with the investigation into Knowlton?

Justbear's avatar

I believe most of Alabama's coordinators have become HCs elsewhere. I don't know who their OC and DC are right now, but they are not on the short list?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Christmas in January maybe?? Oh be still my heart.

CalBear91's avatar

Ha! I came here knowing I'd see you post something along these lines. I can't disagree.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Honestly, CB, making a bowl game last season, with THAT schedule, is really as good as I could’ve hoped for. Gotta tip the cap to JW, who admittedly wants to be here in Berkeley and to win at Cal. While I have serious doubts about his management/CEO ability to build a perennial 9-win program as HC, if he can somehow string together a few more 7-win seasons with some bowl wins, I’ll be happy with it.

Peetyjay's avatar

Spoken like a true Cal Bears fan!
