Sounds like the first major lesson Tosh learned was to tone down all the empty hype speak.
Rivera: “The expectations were ginormous, and I don’t think that was fair. We’ve got a guy who’s a first-time head coach; he’s going to learn.”
--> Yeah, Tosh set those expectations himself.
Lupoi: “What has worked for me in the past is not necessarily the best course of action here at Cal. It starts with me recognizing that and adapting. I’m attempting to do a much better job at, for example, how I communicate in group environments
--> Yeah, you were the hype man brought in to boost already successful nationally ranked programs. Taking over an underachieving program fighting tooth and nail for its very existence is a little bit of a different situation.
This isn't bad news it just confirms what we've all assumed. It's good things have gotten serious so we can either move forward with Lupoi getting better or move on without him asap.
What a disaster. Everyone seems to have made the wrong choices at every opportunity.
I don't think Rivera is actually trying to sabotage Tosh in order to secure the extremely prestigious HC position at checks notes Cal, especially after its reputation has been further damaged. To me, it seems like everyone's always making poor decisions.
In actuality the article doesn't say much of anything new that we didn't know (or came out from the presser earlier). Other than maybe Tosh focusing on all the extracurricular stuff. And the point that sources say RR wanted the HC job (which is strange; if that was the case I would think he could have easily sold Lyons on it). But as before, a lot of this feels like RR trying to cover his behind. The whole point about throwing your arms up in the air on Tosh and all assistants being new - you allowed this. You can't sit back now and just shrug it off.
Cal Football is drowning, and all this piling on right now by the national media critters is merely describing the water...
The fact that it's reached this level of low-key chaos makes me no longer trying to figure out who to blame between Tosh and Ron, this is starting to reflect badly on Rich Lyons. Perhaps he needs to stop riding motorbikes onto the field of CMS so often and get the football program under control.
I'm not so sure blaming Lyons yet is valid. He hired a dude as GM with significant HC and GM experience, as well as strong personal connections and legendary status to the school. The reasonable expectation is that RR would credibly oversee the rebuild. The question is what does Lyons do now moving forward.

If Ron really wants the job, which I don’t doubt, he has no business being GM. Very unprofessional.
Makes the Tosh hire look even more questionable.
