After 6 seasons of poor defensive line play and 9 seasons of downright bad o-line play, we need someone who can come in and immediately attract the kind of talent to impact both lines. None of the other coaches linked to us have that ability except Tosh.
Someone mentioned this on another page, but we don't have the luxury of being mad at Lupoi for what happened over a decade ago. We need someone who will come in and swing for the fences if we want any shot at coming out on the right side of the next phase of realignment. I'd rather crash and burn with a boom or bust hire that has a chance at greatness over a safe up-and-coming G5 HC who's ceiling will be 9 wins max. At least we'll get relegated knowing we took a real shot at this rather than being mad that 8-5 records aren't good enough for the B1G.
We need to be relevant as soon as humanly possible. If Cal Athletics wants to keep supporting 30 varsity sports like we currently do, football needs to survive the ACC's imminent collapse.
Yeah, uh, there are a lot of people who still remember how lupoi screwed his Alma Mater when he left. Not me, but I would guess there are some who will stop donating a significant amount of $ if he is hired. He is soulless.
I want someone with HC experience. Last time we went with a young and successful defensive coordinator, it did not work out. It also concerns me that Tosh has not become a HC anywhere even though he has been a coveted assistant coach on the rise for over 10 years.
True but also Tedford had not been a head coach until he came to Cal. If Cal does hire Tosh, he has a great head coach mentor in RR - twice NFL coach of the year. And I would bet that RR would make his role part of the deal in any coaching hire.
I don’t want Tosh. But I noticed in Ron’s press conference a Freudian slip: “the most important question is why come back to Cal?” And then he noticed this slip and immediately followed up with “why Cal?”
That was a tell. Only three people fit this description: Tosh, Troy Taylor and Plough. I don’t think the latter two are serious candidates.
This makes me sad. But I trust Ron more than any other ADs that we’ve had in the past.
Like it or not, the widely accepted belief out here in Hawaii is that (barring a bad hire) he’s anticipating coming back to Cal next year and going to Oregon the following year when Moore leaves. Cal will match what any other school offers (within reason) and Oregon is where he really wants to be so he likely won’t jump for one year to immediately leave again when Oregon opens up.
Personally that’s what I also believe and don’t think there’s much Cal can do to change that. Take that for what it’s worth.
Wouldn’t be surprised at all if this is the track for JKS: coming back to Cal for one more year and then going elsewhere to play for a contender. That is, unless Cal can become a contender quickly.
That is great news. That’s all we need. If we get him one year w a half decent supporting cast the sky is the limit and he’ll end up staying for Junior year too. Enough can’t be said ab what he’s done as a true freshman throwing to literal walk ons with poor protection.
Cal is 18-4 historically with no football coach. If there's one school that can have the working proletariat seize the means of production and return to collective decision making, it's us. From Bogota to Memorial Stadium, it's right to rebel!
Tedford and others who were around when the "betrayal" went down will be on the hiring committee. I would assume if they hire Lupoi that Tedford and Co. are OK with it. I don't see Cal making that hire against the wishes of the best coach in modern Cal history who they just voted into their Hall of Fame. And if Coach Tedford's good with it then so am I.
Bryce was part of the 2012 class that Tosh put together and then tore apart. The biggest what could have been. And he doesn't hold grudges against Tosh.
It’s almost like he’s actually worked with Tosh and has better insight on who he is than any of us. Every single person who’s actually involved and knows the context loves Tosh. Tedford, Ron, Lanning, his players all have nothing but praise for him.
Guys we’re all gonna have to make a decision. Let go of this grudge, or let go of the cal football forever. We don’t have the luxury of “boycotting” the program for a couple years till they bring in someone that suits your standard of personality. Its win now or forever be expelled to the group of 5 for the rest of eternity, while UCLA, USC and Stanford continue without us. I for one am standing firmly with Tosh Lupoi and Ron Rivera and hope you all find it within yourself to do the same.
The simple fact that you refer to a grudge is evidence enough that you fail to understand where many anti-Tosh fans stand.
This isn't personal. It's business.
Having said that, if Rivera hires Lupoi, he hires him. I'll be disapointed, but I will hope to be proven wrong.
If Lupoi becomes the next HC and he doesn't perform to the 9-win standard, there will be a tidal wave of "I told you so" in about three years. I will have plenty of company. Some folks have long memories.
I’ll take the former for $1200, Bob. I’ll continue to root for Cal (hell, I’ve been a fan since I was 6 years old, why give up NOW???), but not love the coach. If not for what he did to Tedford’s team I’d be pretty thrilled, so I’ll be happy for what he’ll do for the players and over time I’ll let it all go, as long as he runs a respectable program….. In Ron Rivera I trust.
I have the memory of an elephant and the conviction of Lex Luthor and the only reason not to tar and feather Lupoi out of the introductory presser is simple: if you combine the hometown/alumni discount with the first time head coach discount, *maybe* you can afford to put the difference into the roster and he can re-recruit the players that absolutely must stay if we are gonna have a prayer of continuing.
But that I am talking myself into Tosh Lupoi is a sign that something is badly broken in this sport.
I am on the Rolo (family history) and Taylor (teammate) bandwagon. They are proven head coaches that have put together and manage winning teams. Plus, you don't need to be a great recruiter anymore since we have NIL packages but you do have to be a really good coach in this era in order to win.

Good interview here from July 29, where George Wrighster asks Tosh about Oregon's program, his recruiting & coaching philosophy, among other things:

Tosh may be a great recruiter who JKS obviously has some familiarity with but it'll be hard to get over what he (and Sarkisian) did to Jeff Tedford.
Well, maybe he and Coach Wilcox could exchange jobs.
Seriously, I don't think RR has made a decision yet. This sounds like Lupoi blowing smoke to raise his own stock.
Is the defensive-minded Lupoi the guy to keep JKS in the program? I have my doubts.

For your sake, I hope we get selected to the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl, provided we don't upset SMU.

There were always gonna be doubts about jeeping JKS in the fold, even if you kept Wilcox.
Yes. Didn't JW bend over backwards trying to keep Nando, including him on the hiring committee for OC. And, despite that, he bolted.
I'd really like to know the truth of why Nando left. Was it really just the money after ge expressed his love for Cal. Or was something else going on?

...loving these trolls!
Not thrilled about this choice

This is interesting. Bryce Treggs wants Tosh.

No way... the alums who hate him are way more informed and better judges of his character and abilities.

The prodigal son returns…
FUCK TOSH LUPOI. HE'S A PIECE OF SHIT

No. Not trustworthy.
