This schedule blows! The only gimme is Sac. State. Our warm-ups look brutal. Nevada and TCU are respectable programs that have given us fits before. Hell, even the big boys like Alabama and Ohio State get at least three body bag games like Chattanooga or Mercer to get in shape for the conference schedule. And who the hell thought that it would be a great idea to play UCLA three years in a row at the Rose Bowl!?!?!? I hope they return the favor and play us three years in a row at Memorial (which I doubt). Football gods, why do you hate us so much?
That really means a lot. I mean when did Cal ever go to three Rose Bowls in a row? Epic times for the program! (Let's just hope that we do go to the Rose Bowl on January 1 2022 against an opponent other than UCLA.)
Wilcox’s penchant for taking-the-air out the ball with multiple 3-&-outs whilst clinging to a one-score 2nd half lead is a legit concern for a 9-3 season, however....
Sure, but taking the foot off the gas with a 1-score lead? It’s not a bad strategy if you can put together a 7 minute drive that ends in points - even a FG.
But... we’re not Wisconsin, with a dominant, road-grading OL, and our passing game is not efficient enough to consistently convert 3rd downs. Thus, we more often than not go 3 & out with 2 running plays and an incomplete pass, and then punt after eating up 2 minutes. It’s even worse late in the game when the opposing team uses timeouts and we kill just a minute...sigh...
How often has this happened? I love Wilcox, and think he’s great for Cal....but he’s not great for my blood pressure, bc his games are always dog fights. Part of this is that he allows the opposing team to hang around by incorporating a clock-eating offensive strategy that he doesn’t necessarily have the ability to execute.
I am not going to complain about another lame odd year schedule (we used to get U$C and UW at home in odd years) nor will I whine about the fact that we only have one November home game. Why? Because I'm so happy about the prospect of being in Memorial Stadium on a football Saturday again. Cannot wait. (Six months and two days.)
(we used to get U$C and UW at home in odd years) How long ago was that?
Since my college days from 15 years ago, I've known even years to be good and odd years to be meh for schedules. Odd years we always play USC, WSU, OSU at home.
2003 was the last time we played them both at home in an odd year. It was consistently the case into the nineties then there were exceptions. I'm not sure why the change became permanent.
I see. I came to Cal in 2003 and was not so into football at the time. I wish I did.
I thought we might get shuffling this year due to disruptions from last year, but looks like they treated it as just cancelled games and continuing the same pattern.
Poor Justbear...imagine the all the stress you could’ve saved yourself from by remaining disinterested in Cal football. I sometimes think back to what my life would’ve been like had I just gone to the movies instead of Memorial Stadium that first time....;-)
WOW!!!! I thought that I was the only one that felt this way! It seems that whenever I pay attention to my Golden Bears, they either under-perform or just break my heart! Football gods, why do you hate us so?
I like the schedule. We get to play Washington first so it won't be freezing and Arizona later in the year so it won't be extremely hot. The bye is perfectly positioned with the Friday game at Oregon giving us time to prep for one of the best teams.
Competitively it looks pretty good. I do wish they could have beefed up the home schedule a bit to make up for last year, but will take what we can get at this point. Hope full capacity will be allowed so that away game tickets are feasible. Would like to go visit Oregon and Stanfurd in addition to the home games.
I could be wrong but didn’t we have the same vs. USC, @Furd, @UCLA stretch to close out 2019? Except for the first one of those games it turned out pretty well.

Well I'm really happy for the people who worked hard and pulled off a last minute matchup against UCLA at Rose Bowl last year.
I think that they all went to FUCLA.
12 games, any 12 games will do. The record will sort itself out.
Nevada's QB Carson Strong is supposed to be a top QB prospect in the 2022 draft so should be an interesting first challenge for our D

We are playing at the Rose Bowl for three straight years!
That really means a lot. I mean when did Cal ever go to three Rose Bowls in a row? Epic times for the program! (Let's just hope that we do go to the Rose Bowl on January 1 2022 against an opponent other than UCLA.)
"I mean when did Cal ever go to three Rose Bowls in a row?" 1948-1952. Regular season games in '48, '50 and '51 and the '49, '50 and '51 Rose Bowls.
Oops, that third regular season game should have been '52.
If that happens, we go to Rose Bowl for 4th year in a row!
Do wish we got UO earlier since they MAY be breaking in a new (and young) QB..... maybe.....
I dream of CAL being undefeated every year but I can realistically see Bears going 9-3 in 2021!
Wilcox’s penchant for taking-the-air out the ball with multiple 3-&-outs whilst clinging to a one-score 2nd half lead is a legit concern for a 9-3 season, however....
It seems like he starts trying to run out the clock as soon as the fourth quarter starts.

Just makes me happy to see any schedule! Go Bears!
Me too. That's why I didn't even look closely at OOC schedule.
Me too. That's why I said I'm not going to complain.

Doesn’t matter when we play Arizona, as inexplicably they’re kryptonite. Can’t beat them.
Arizona games are always either night games or late in the season when injuries pile up. They're always going to be bad juju

Bye week seems ideal: halfway through, before the Friday at Oregon so we don't suffer a short week.
November looks kinda brutal. Four games, no easy ones, three away, USC right before Big Game.
that's a good point. But then again, last time we got a bye before @Oregon...https://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=332712483
Wow I totally forgot there was a game that Zach Kline got a lot of action. This must have been the game in the rain.
I could be wrong but didn’t we have the same vs. USC, @Furd, @UCLA stretch to close out 2019? Except for the first one of those games it turned out pretty well.
I think that is correct.
I share your concern; I suspect we could suffer a let down for Stanfurd after clobbering USC....... We'll need to focus HARD !!!!
