Paul Chryst out at Wisconsin: Could Justin Wilcox call up his old boss for some help at Cal?
Cal could use some offensive consulting.
The coaching carousel is moving early and quickly.
In a rather surprising turn of events, Wisconsin has dumped Paul Chryst early midseason.
The Badgers have started out slow which makes this a bit of a surprise. But it seems like Wisconsin wants to reboot before things get too strange.
We don’t want to speculate too heavily on the future of the Cal offensive coaching staff. But with the Bears struggling to produce points and with Chryst having nothing to do for the next few months and a huge buyout to cushion him ($11 million!), it seems like there is a potential opportunity for him to come to the Bay Area for a few months and provide some additional offensive consulting to help out Bill Musgrave.
There are some natural connections here.
Chryst hired Justin Wilcox to be the Wisconsin defensive coordinator in 2016. Wilcox would parlay that into the Cal coaching gig. It’d be pretty neat if Wilcox could pool some resources to bring Chryst in as an analyst, similar to what Jeff Tedford did for Chris Petersen in Washington.
Geep Chryst, Cal tight end coach, is Paul’s brother! Geep hasn’t really overlapped with his brother coaching-wise, as one traversed the pros, the other the collegiate ranks, but you can imagine it’d be a natural integration between the two.
Wisconsin fans were not a big fan of Chryst’s offensive production, particularly in the later years, but it would fit the Wilcox MO of hiring successful coaches who he has familiarity with. Something to ponder as Cal could use all the offensive help they can get.
I don’t think it can hurt but I doubt it would be much help. The Wisconsin offense was steadily declining under Chryst. I believe Wisconsin was held to 2 yards rushing last week against…checks notes…Illinois.
need Sonny Dykes as a consultant.
in what world can I get Wilcox as DC, Dykes as OC or one of them as head coach under the other.
