Plus, an examination of why PFF's grades are so oddly harsh on Cal's defense
I don’t know if I would characterize Cal’s defensive performance as great, but it seemed solid to my mind. But by most objective measures (yards, points) Cal held the impressive UW offense to one of their least productive games of the year.
And yet, as has been the case for the entire season, PFF was not impressed with Cal’s defense, handing out uniformly mediocre-to-bad grades. What gives?!
Without interviewing the folks that did the grading we’ll never know for sure. But I suspect the answer to that question probably gets at the limitations of a PFF style grading system.
