Perhaps it has to do with snap and finding a long snapper that can get the ball that low and accurate for a FG kick. Snapping for a punt is very different than a FG/XP attempt.
Well I finally looked it up; thereтАЩs no rule for it, itтАЩs just habit. Which is strange because I see blocked kicks all the time, and almost never see a snap that the holder canтАЩt handle.
I do remember a P12 Net feature on the USC game in тАШ03 where someone said they тАЬcheatedтАЭ on the snap by lining up a yard deeper than normal. I guess they were cheating against the long snapper, not the rules.
Ive been wondering for years why nobody places the ball 10 yards back on extra points and short field goals
