Can't say I am totally proud about this, but I have been to a ton of Cal games and very seldom bought tickets from the box office or an agency. Always the hawkers on the streets. If you were patient enough to wait until game time, you could get them for face value or less. I would like to say I have grown up a bit since those days.
I didn't watch the second half, but I see that from the game notes that there were several pass interference calls on USC. Could it be that Cal's comeback relied on USC defenders interfering, and refs making those calls?
Those PI's weren't "let's throw deep ball and hope for PI" kinda underthrows. They were actually thrown in what appeared to be a catch in strides but the USC defenders pulled the shoulders of Cal receivers..
The pass interference calls on USC were extremely blatant, "let me rip this guy's shoulder pads from behind while he tries to make the catch" type of penalties. Not even the most generous of refs could have ignored it.
I liked to see some fight, but I wonder if the score had been lower and closer the entire game if our O would have broken out. It’s pretty much in keeping with SC to be a little undisciplined in that regard and let the other side score in garbage time and maybe sneak back in the game. Whereas Oregon typically keeps its foot on your neck the entire 60 mins
"This will be the first time in a long time that Cal will play Stanford 1) in a bowlless season and 2) have a solid chance to win anyway." Unless I'm misreading this comment, wasn't last year a bowlless season in which we had a solid chance to win?
I refuse to believe that we haven't reversed climate change. I refuse to believe that people deny the legitimacy of the 2020 election. I refuse to the believe that Cal's men's basketball team won't win the Pac 12 this year. Someone should write articles on these topics.
Not sure what the reason is for the drop in recruiting chops.
Usually we are in the middle of the pack, suggesting that we should be going 7-5 every year. So we underperform slightly relative to our talent level as far as wins and losses go.
Maybe we can pick up some steam if we beat OSU and run the table.
With regard to watching the game I actually started to fast forward the action once USC was ahead 34-14 only to suddenly see Cal scoring touchdowns. So I rewound the DVR and watched the 4th quarter with great interest. Finally the coaching staff took some risks, which was a breath of fresh air. But why only against SC?
On your comment of Cal's D, they were playing with two DB's who hadn't seen the field all year. LB's who seldom get much action. Injuries have really hurt the defense and it's scheming.
Not quite correct. It may have been Miles Williams's first start, but definitely not his first game action. Similarly, Tyson McWilliams got the bulk of the snaps at UW in relief of Lu Hearns.
Cal HAS to recruit O lineman. It looks like they are making a concerted effort to do this. Recruiting O linemen does not bring up their recruiting score as much as RB's, WR's or QB's.
Nope. This is college football, pettiness and all. You win your rivalry game, you rub it in. Cal has done a great job of making me care less and less about the major revenue sports year over year (I've been much happier recently without sports in my life), but I will always make too much out of beating Furd.
I tend to agree, but Stanford's wins against Notre Dame and Arizona State are better than Cal's wins against Arizona and UNLV. And Stanford should have beaten Oregon State last month if not for a mindless final minute of the game. I guess it depends on which Stanford shows up.
The win against Notre Dame isn't that impressive. The only reason they are close to being ranked is because the refs helped them out against us, and their "conference" is the ACC. I guarantee USC trounces them.
Haven't been to a home game in awhile since I live in So Cal now. Just out of curiosity, how much would, say, a 40-yard sideline ticket to that game cost now?
That is just stunning and explains in part why the stadium does not fill up anymore. Used to sit in Section T a lot, which I believe is for the young alumni, and tickets in the mid to late 90's were less than $30 if I recall correctly.
Would you commit to a school that has done worse every year since 2019 and is on a 5 game losing streak -- and very likely an 8 game losing streak -- to end the season?
That sounds reasonable. I'm no athlete but when I was in HS I had no intention of going to Berkeley, but it was the best school I was admitted to, so I gave it a try. My original plan was to go to UCSD, but I liked it here at Cal so I never transferred out.

I always buy cheap on StubHub.
HERE'S HOPING STANFURDS TREE LOSES ITS BARK AGAINST CAL! GERBEAR
Thanks Nick. Glad you two made the trip down!

Regardless of the $C O, I don't see them winning a major bowl game because of their Pass defense.
So basically same as Oklahoma under Riley

I remember a couple being legit. The defender hooked the receiver with his off hand while defending the pass.
A massive blown coverage that resulted in a 47-yard walk in TD by an uncovered Mavin Anderson also helped…Cal was down 20 at the start of 4Q...

I, for one, cannot unsee pizza boxes blocking election observers. ;)
Yes, to each their own, except those that vote early and often.

We've been recruiting in the 50 and lower range for years now, so I'd advise against throwing stones in glass houses.

So rub it in more when we do win!

And then extended their coach, who happens to let his terrible coordinators stick around until THEY want to leave?
Transfer portal.
Which LB went to Furd to play with his brother?
Caught the winning TD a couple of weeks ago. And had a PR for a TD the week or two before that. So he's doing alright.
