If one were to look at this subjective list https://bit.ly/3ISn928, speaking only of pure talent (not results or effectiveness), I'd put Garbers at #15 after Dave Barr & before Nate Longshore. He improved every year, and went from not so good to pretty good. But instead of saying he beat Stanford, stopped this or that losing streak, etc, I'd say that he ran the offense and contributed to those things. Some of them may not have happened if he wasn't the qb, but the same could be said about his supporting cast - goal line stands, timely interceptions, etc. He'd probably be the first to agree, a class guy. Good luck Chase.
The list can be found by clicking on the above link. It goes back to at least 1920. Yes, I loved how Gale Gilbert played, a special talent. I was at the 1982 big game, it was probably the most exiting game I had seen even prior to :04 on the clock. The single greatest catch I've ever seen was in that game by a fully laid-out Mariet Ford in the south end zone, and no one ever talks about it. I wonder why...
Not among the greatest Cal QBs for me but certainly among the most memorable. Chase's five wins in rivalry games will be his legacy. Best of luck to him.
Personally, I think the transfer portal is going to be a boon for teams like Cal. Probably as much as the end of unlimited scholarships. Cal is never going to be a top recruiting destination out of high school. That said, we can be a recruiting destination in the transfer market, where the haves really don't have as much space as the sorta have nots. The haves like Bama et al. are trying to be three deep. Well, some of those three deep four star players are starters. We just need to find the right fits.
He could be frustrating at times, but watching him get out of trouble time and again with his legs was fun to watch. Proof of how valuable he was to the team was what happened when he was not playing. I would like to know what Cal's record was from 2018 on when he did not start and finish the game. Pretty ugly, I think. BTW, I will be surprised as hell if any of the big names like Martinez and Slovis choose to come to Cal via the portal after this news. Trying to learn a tough offense in one season behind a shaky offensive line maybe not that appealing from the outside.
He beat Stanford, UCLA, and USC, and broke some ugly losing streaks to those odious teams in the process. For that alone, he'll be high on my list of favorite Cal QBs.
If we're talking about beating Stanfurd...they didn't play the same teams. That said, Garbers is almost everything you want/need out of a college QB. I don't think his arm is NFL ready and what we were lacking from him the most, but can only wish him the best.
Thanks Chase! It was a joy watching you play. Good luck in the NFL!
Out goes a baller. Good luck with the NFL Chase!
I think maybe the QB competition is a little bit less wide-open than it appears though if Chase is going out like this...
Thank U, Chase, for everything! So many great games, great memories, great wins! Best of luck to U!
Glad to see him still chasing his dream. I'm not sure he will get selected but he's brought us some great Cal moments and I thank him for that.
Chase won big games and was excellent in big moments. The drive against Stanford. 2am in Seattle. Beating usc twice. He’s a cal legend.

Totally agree...he did a lot as a Bear, with wins at Ole Miss and BYU, in a bowl game, and a couple of each v. Furd, SC, UW, and one v. UO and UCLA...
A solid career for a solid quarterback...
Now the fun starts - who starts for the Bears week 1 2022?
Thank you Chase! Always a Bear. I trust Musgrave to make the best of whoever he is tutoring.
Thank you Chase Garbers, and congrats on graduating!
He goes into the Hall of Legendary Heroes or whatever it’s called just for that Big Game performance alone
He'll be a Hero in the Legends of the Legendary Heroes
BGH
You can't tell the story of Cal football without him. That's good enough for most players.
Cheers to a Cal legend! Saw so many great wins with him under center!

He will always be a Big Game legend. He broke the ugly USC losing streak and then broke the ugly USC Memorial losing streak.
He ran some rebels off the field as he went all Sherman on them on their home field.
Sure he has some frustrating moments but those memories will fade and I will always remember his brightest moments.

Best of luck in the NFL, Chase.
Won at an SEC school, as well...
Likewise, he did what Jared Goff couldn't, which is high praise in my book.
