The PA system was dominated by loud and sometimes obscene music which was playing during the stadium announcer's stuff. Turn it off at the right time.

The whole crew and announcer is probably not used to anybody listening.

You would think by now Cal would be conditioned to this as their destiny.

We used to say you should never have hope cause if you do Cal will crush it from you. And that was when I was in college 30 years ago. Some things never change, we just get brief glorious bumps in the middle.

100 times out of 100 when u have a defense that holds the offense to 230 yards w/ only 96 yards passing and the D creates 4 turnovers, you win the game.

UNLESS you are Cal. This loss is 100% on Spav. His play calling and not playing the QB (Finley) that was better suited to win this game. C'mon man, we had short fields multiple times inside the red zone and came up with nothing, nada, rien, 何もない, ничего.

1st game in my Cal fandom that I became physically ill.

I thought the offense clicked better when Finley was pulled.

For that drive, we all thought how easy it was, but that was the only drive they scored.

welp, u should listen to Spav's presser and, as importantly, Pawlawski's take on the QB play.

Hey I’m just saying what I saw in the stands. Offense was terrible under both but at least it felt like there was energy with Jackson. Doesn’t really matter, this goes to the coaching, reminded me of the Cheez-It Bowl. Both of those teams are going to lose a ton of games this year.

Jackson V created some excitement, but not consistent results.

The game was terrible but I enjoyed the atmosphere. Auburn fans were a good company. I don't think they enjoyed the long walk to and back from the stadium. I saw some older folks who were dying on Shattuck Ave. after walking down the hill from the stadium after the game.

I just went back and watched all 14 minutes of Sam Jackson's junior year highlights. (He did not play football his senior year.) And then I watched the highlights of the Auburn game. It is very obvious that sitting in the pocket and completing check-downs is not this kid's game. I think it explains why it took until the final days of fall camp to name a starter and why they had to spend so much time trying to coach him to stay in the pocket. But what I think we are going to see all year is lock on the primary target and throw, or lock on the primary target, don't like what I see, and take off. This will hopefully produce some spectacular runs and many completions while on the run if his receivers can break routes and come back to him.. Auburn was not having it, so we shall see with the rest of the teams.

Wow, I won a Sunshine Pumper award while giving STeams a rating of 1...... I'd give a 0 except the kickoffs didn't go backwards.....

And no dropped KO or punt returns. Progress.

curious - does the poll close a few hours after the post goes up? I was going to (on safari) chime in for both games, but no poll presented itself, only the article & comments. I had no issues with this in previous seasons, poll was up for a day or two.

Expand full comment

I think the link to the poll in the post is not too obvious.....that may be the issue (that I've had before....).

Expand full comment

This might be the root of the issue. Last week I included a little blurb by the link explaining the Rate the Bears form. Participation was a bit higher last week too (although it's always higher after road games and after wins).

I'll add a blurb about it again in the insta-recap this week so it's more apparent. Thanks for the feedback!

Auburn fan, "Trust the process and clean up the mistakes and you can have a good season." Seems like good advice. There is about a quarter cup of Kool-Aid left in my thermos. See you all at the Idaho game; then we will see about this process stuff I guess.

How many years into this process are we now? Methinks it’s done and this is the outcome of the process.

I got 3/4 left in my double wall Hydroflask. I'm also concealing a half pint of vodka to add later when I run low.

Game day: I noticed that both Wazzu and Texas Tech had crossed cutlasses on their gear.

RIP Mike Leach

Ahh. Funny that I saw it on Wazzu, made the connection to "the Pirate", but then couldn't figure out why his old team was doing that. That's a nice tribute. Years from now we may look back at this time in college football as the time when much loved old things died and new things were born.

I would certainly not mourn the end of Cal middling. LOL

Yeah, it was a nice gesture.

According to an old paperback book I had called History gone MAD (by the Mad magazine guys who also penned Spy vs. Spy) traveling from Germany to Southern France, and eventually North Africa, shall hereby be known as "Vandalism". And that's the barbarian tribe we play on Saturday, the Vandals.
